This show began like any other, but without the transition difficulties. All was smooth. The music, on the other hand, was not. After a long, satisfying week, I was in need of some loud, abrasive rock music. But it wasn't all like that. Due to the cold weather, I mixed in some beach pop, fuzzy dream pop and good old garage rock and pop. Don't forget to hit up the bottom of this post and listen to two tracks from the playlist! "Torn Curtain" by Television [...]

DONATE: Karl Blau's KELP Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism Society (KLAPS). My familiarity with Karl Blau's music is something which has come about only recently; having warmed to his contribution to one of my favourite albums of last year , and sought out some of his recent work as a result, its clear that he is a truly prolific, 'local hero' in the North West of the US. In a musical career spanning nearly 20 years, he's poured his time into creating a subscription series called "KELP Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism Society" through which he releases the music [...]

Hipster's iPod — Guest Mix on Big Echo by Eugene Khrolenko on Mixcloud
Olympia, WA quintet LAKE has returned with a new album, Giving & Receiving, their third with K Records . This time around the band tends toward a mellow, loungy mood for the record, but with a few funky grooves. And despite some material here about the BP Gulf spill or the almost creepy "Skeleton Costume," the songs on Giving seem to to keep a warm and positive vibe. While the album is packed with sugary melodies, the multipart harmonies and elaborate but not overly polished arrangements give off a sophisticated, [...]

Key Losers is the Portland, Oregon-based project of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Katy Davidson, ex-Dear Nora, YACHT collaborator, etc. Her airy, sunny, graceful, impressively patchwork first official Key Losers full-length California Lite follows a 2009 "mini-album" Adjust . She's joined on it by the "Key Losers Black Crow Session Band," a group of collaborators featuring Karl Blau (saxophone), Total Noise's Greg Campanile (percussion) and
Tom Filardo (lead guitar, vocals
), LAKE's
Andrew Dorsett (bass and vocals) and Eli Moore (vocals), and No Kids' Nick Krgovich (keyboards and vocals)
. It was engineered by Phil Elverum, who captured the 12 songs "almost [...]
New Pornographer Kathryn Calder kicks off her first ever solo tour next month in support of her solo debut Are You My Mother? Download " If You Only Knew ," and check out the video for " Arrow ." Calder will of course be playing one show with the New Pornographers alongside Thao & Mirah, then it's off for a short run on the west coast with Himalayan Bear and Karl Blau. We caught up with Calder and fellow Pornographer, who told us about their intent to release solo albums. Sort of. [...]

MP3: Karl Blau - Celebrate By Singing It's always rewarding to be a fan of Mr. Karl Blau as he is both prolific and consistent, the rarest combination. On May 10th he and K Records will release "Max" a 4 song 12 inch of that classic KB groove, the usual smooth and a bit of a subdued attitude. Preview now with "Celebrate By Singing" and order a copy when you can.
Longtime Anacortes songwriter Karl Blau's back with "Celebrate By Singing," a jazzy song from a new 103 called Max . When I wrote about his " Dark Sedan " in 2009 I said "no matter how sunny he gets, Karl Blau's always sounded autumnal..." That holds true here. Read More...
Do you remember that scene in Death to Smoochy when Edward Norton is dressed up as the purple rhinoceros known as "Smoochy" and he is playing campfire songs to a group of children? During this scene, along with many other scenes in the movie, Norton is riding on a teeter totter that is dangerously close [...]

Arrington de Dionyso's Malaikat Dan Singa — Madu Mahadahsyat A forewarning: Arrington de Dionyso 's Suara Naga is some weird, weird stuff. That's weird by my standards, and I'm someone who falls asleep to the sounds of Yellow Swans . But I digress. I picked up this album for three key reasons: (1) It's on K Records (duh), (2) Dionyso's work with Old Time Relijun kicks tremendous amounts of ass, and [...]
![Karl Blau: Golden Chariot [Single Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3298300_lg.jpg)
Karl Blau is a bit of a mad genius, like many of the folks creating music in Anacortes and it's bigger brother Olympia. The music is grounded in genre influences like pop and folk, but it's also a bit out there. It always has been. And you know, with artists as unique as Blau, I wouldn't have it any other way. Golden Chariot is Blau's latest offering and it comes in the form of a Dub Narcotic Disco Plate courtesy K Records , who will also [...]
If Godzilla is on your show poster, I will talk about you. Didn't I see you at Weedeater on Monday night? Oh, I didn't? That's because I was played hooky and wasn't there. Where I was happens to be none of your business (read: sitting on my bed, fatigued and shoegazing). The underlining point is that [...]

MP3: Karl Blau - Dark Sedan Busy day today! Hoping I can check in here more throughout it, but meanwhile I dusted off a great, under looked record by Karl Blau that came out back in 2009. "Zebra" didn't seem to get the press and attention that his previous 2 LPs on K had received which is tragic because it might have just been his best yet. Dude is playing bass in Earth now, which is cool but in the meantime, track down a copy of "Zebra", brah!

Spacebomb Records , a new Richmond-based record label has been launched by Matthew White (of Fight the Big Bull), Dean Christesen (of RVAJazz) and Jesse Medaries. From Spacebomb Records: Centered around a house band (think Stax or Motown), a distinct cast of contributing auxiliary musicians (think Phil Spector's wrecking crew), division of labor (think Brill Building), and strong and unified musical and artistic statements (think Blue Note), Spacebomb is founded on old models, combining the creative structures and recording techniques of great record labels of the 20th century with the the DIY revolution of the last [...]
