This post is long, and overdue, but I wanted to be thorough and include all the bands I saw. I missed most of Wednesday due to work, but packed in enough free shows Thurs.-Sun. to more than make up for it, although I am getting kind of old and took it easy in the evenings for the most part. I've finally gone through hundreds of pics (click on pictures below for larger image), and will include mp3s from each band below and hopefully a link to some of their live SXSW sets, since they did almost all give me free [...]

mp3: karl blau - lake king's daughter mp3: karl blau - spring morning this has been a great week for new music. besides the blessed leak of lookout mountain lookout sea , tuesday saw the release of some excellent albums... destroyer's trouble in dreams , she & him's volume one , and karl blau's am to name a few. i am a big fan of blau's 2006 album beneath waves but i have to admit [...]

It was a real pretty today in Oregon. I drove out to FCI Sheridan ( a federal prison), down through the pinot country, through Newberg and McMinnville, surrounded by hills covered in vineyards, beautiful clouds, blossoming hazelnut trees, and daffodils everywhere. In the ditches, the fields, yards, just everywhere. Then i was in prison. Jolie Holland - Springtime Can Kill You karl blau - Spring Morning

A concept record based upon the poems of writer A.A. Milne (Winnie the Pooh), Karl Blau's AM could be the soundtrack to a sepia-tone sweep of sublime countryside.

The coolest kids in town right now: Ghosthustler, The Tallest Man On Earth, White Williams, El Guincho, Karl Blau, Cassettes Won't Listen, Sunny Day Sets Fire und natürlich The Cool Kids. (more...)

SXSW is still in full effect -- highlights from yesterday included sets from No Age, Clipse & Re-up Gang, and Cut Copy at the Rhapsody thing, the Stereogum party, and a cool Lou Reed tribute featuring MMJ, Moby, and the man himself. Photos to come, but for now, a song: AM is Karl Blau 's "psych-folk ode" to Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne . I haven't listened enough yet to pick up the connection there, but [...]

When I reviewed Karl Blau 's Dance Positive record last year, I really had no idea who the singer was and to be fair, not much has changed. I only listened to the CD with the photocopied cover because he's from Anacortes and we had just got back from a road trip there. But, make no mistake, Blau is an incredible talent. He's just one that dwells in the corners and shadows, refusing to force his way into the spotlight. I mean, he's had three positive reviews from Pitchfork, worked with Phil Elvrum and tours [...]

Austin, Tx does it again! A Faulty Chromosome has created a debut album that sounds both cheaply made and intensely complex at the same time. Self-Released, "as an ex-anorexic's six sicks exit,..." is model for the sloppy, yet talented. They are selling the album through paypal for a donation, and recommend $6.66 to cover cost. This album is worth more then that for the interesting drawings alone. Honestly, the music is a mutant combo of surfy, jangle pop, and abstract electro-mush. Good stuff stuff stuff stufff! Listen to : Jackie O [...]
Karl Blau - "Noah Richards Son" Karl Blau wakes up, covered in sex, and sits aching up in the light blue dust of the morning. He scrapes his vision free from blurred sleep as if from the bottom of a pan and walks stretching to the shower. He showers just long enough for one thought to form: a warmonger is not a breed of dog, that was just a dream. Only one meal remains in the fridge, perfectly timed, as today will surely be his last where he'll be forced to eat like a regular [...]

Karl Blau - "Spring Morning" (Whistler 2008) Karl Blau – AM / Whistler I suppose it is appropriate that Karl Blau – an eclectic, DIY-savvy singer/songwriter from northern Washington state – chose A.A. Milne as the muse for a record. Though known almost unanimously at this point for penning the Disney-hijacked Winnie-the-Pooh stories, Milne was a widely varied writer. Primarily a playwright, he as well penned a number of novels (both fiction and non-fiction), newspaper articles, poems and humor pieces, but it all became [...]

mp3: karl blau - into the nada [buy] karl blau is a really busy guy. between recording with various k records' artists-- the microphones, mirah , and several others-- managing his KELP! album of the month club, touring and recording with laura veirs , and maintaining his own solo career, karl has got quite a lot on his plate. this track [...]
(sorry for the delay, my computer broke this week and only got it fixed today). phil elverum and his friends (at least the ones who played at the lutheran church of the messiah last week) have something in common: they are astounding. last thursday's incredible basement show, lit by candles and colored lightbulbs, was simply transportive. the 150 or so people crammed into the greenpoint church were quiet, respectful, and stunned by what we saw - simply, one of the finest shows of the year. as you may have guessed by now, this was [...]
Rebel 'gainst the changing seasons, get outside and go banay-nays at the Current Canyon Festival! The kind folks at Current Gallery (a local artist-run gallery/studio/performance space) have amassed a wig scrambling lineup of local/national artists guaranteed to bring the am to the pm this weekend. Plus over 15 video artists/performances and a mad craft market (bring your own pigeon feathers). Everything goes down at 30 S. Calvert St. from 1-9pm Sat and Sun. Bmore duo Monarch (below) are undoubtedly one of the most anticipated acts of the weekend, more on them when we release [...]

I have to be completely honest. I had never heard of Karl Blau , D+ or Bret Lunsford , so the ambitious nature of this project is kind of lost on me. I mean, I appreciate the effort required for Dance Positive – Karl took songs by his former band mate and reworked them into a completely new form – but I don't think knowing that effort really changed how I listened to the record. I found it hard to picture the song in any other fashion, and I think [...]
Misha "Crystal In Love" - It's a bit counter-intuitive, but it seems like falsetto vocals have been slowly colonized by a macho yet passive-aggressive element -- your Chris Martins, your Dave Matthews -- and as a result, it has become a signifier of THE NARCISSISTIC HURT THAT DUDES FEEL. It doesn't exactly ruin the technique across the board -- it's not exactly difficult to differentiate the merits of Keane and Radiohead, you know? -- but it does make me a bit suspicious of young guys who adopt the style. [...]

This guy doesn't mess around. Guitar, flute, sax, drums—you name it, Karl Blau's played it, whether it's on his K Records debut, Beneath the Waves , or for Mirah, The Microphones and Laura Veirs. The album title is aptly named because listening to Blau gives you the same serenity effect as lying on the beach listening to the soothing sound of the waves crash against one another. But just as you think you're listening to a straight-forward pop song comes songs like "Into the Nada," which is full of Spanish-influenced melodies. Come to think of it, messing around is exactly [...]
