Anyone who remotely follows our social media (and Karp's) knows that we were completely smitten with the live show from London's Savages during CMJ. They came back for SXSW and garnered a ton more followers. Yesterday, they announced their debut album Silence Yourself (May 7 via Matador - what seems like a good home for them) - and released the new track "She Will." What Savages songs may lack in repeatability they make up through a fiercely intense and ragging live show. Photos by KARP .

MUSIC REVIEW: Males from London, England play some pretty heavy sludgy shit. In the vain of Queens of the Stone Age, Big Business, Karp and Hawkwind. For a fuzzy trio they sound pretty huge and fuzzy and we think you should check them out. Really not much trickery other than these are very big riffs by Mr. Goldstone on guitar, Mr. Young on Vocals and Drums backed up by Mr. Ben Smith on bass. So we encourage you to bang your head >>here
Documentaries are great and terrible in the same way. They present and convey a sense of reality whether or not it's really all that close to it. Especially if you watch documentaries about rock punk bands. A lot of them just have old and bitter musicians who just blab about the glory days and then talk about how "the scene died" and then all these young punks came along and "everything became corporate" and a truck load of bullshit will spew from their mouths... I don't buy into this concept of "music scenes" dying. There's always gonna be [...]

Words by Rick Moslen I recently overheard some old lady on the bus spew some nonsense about how 2012 marks the end of the world. Maybe she’s a Glenn Beck fanatic or the wife of some cult leader, but she was more-than-likely confusing “end of the world” with 2012’s other important event: “the 30th anniversary of K Records”—obviously. Avoiding aging traits like receding hairlines, bedwetting, and excessive ear hair, the graceful label still holds its charm thanks to an array of hip songwriters ( Karl Blau, Mirah, Atlas Sound, Jeremy Jay ), [...]

Andrea Simms-Karp is an indie roots powerhouse, drawing on folk, pop and classical vibes to create a sound both fresh and familiar. The Ottawa native grew up taking classical voice lessons, singing in choirs, and getting steeped in folk music. She’s been stunning local audiences with her clear voice and unique musical style in live shows for over a decade. In 2004, the Ottawa Folk Festival recognized her talent by awarding her the Beth Ferguson Award for songwriting. With her debut album Sleeper, however, she garnered national attention. [...]

KARP Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Providence, RI 11/13/94 The "KARP Lives" documentary should be coming out sometime this year (I'm hoping), but in the meantime, here's a little live KARP to hold you over. They played in my basement in Minneapolis on this same tour and blew everyone away, obviously. This is not the best live KARP recording I've heard, but it has a stellar track selection of some of their early and best songs. Track listing: 1. Absolutely Fibulous [...]

Get excited loyal Stark enthusiasts, I am more than just a pretty camera (these are the lies I'm fed to keep me compliant). This list was near impossible and it's not really what I expected, but according to my iTunes "plays" this is it. So without further adieu and in no particular order, a wistful whimsical list of what I’ve listened to over and over and over… "Awake My Soul" - Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More Negative 2 points America for the beyond [...]
• Remember a few months ago I was contacted by a casting agent and asked to submit an application to appear on a reality television program about picky eaters ? Well, the show has apparently started airing, and I was never selected to be a part of the show. It's called "Freaky Eaters" and...thank God I dodged that bullet. CNN ran an article reviewing the show today. Apparently it's about people who literally only eat one food. Like, a woman who eats french fries at every meal, or a guy who only eats cheeseburgers. My "picky" diet was described [...]

[mp3] Funeral Party: "Finale" As our good (and newly engaged - congrats guys!) friend Max put it: "everyone loves stuff in the key of free." So, to say thanks, we're dedicating this post to our equally good friend, and amazing photographer KARP . She's shot countless shows for us, and we haven't even been able to come close to posting all of her shots. So, from us to you Karp - thank you! We'll keep you well hydrated with fresh Loisaida. Promise. The Stark team recently caught some stellar sets from [...]
Tumwater's hardcore heroes KARP have a documentary coming out about their influential 1990s existence. It looks pretty rad. Official website here . One other clip from Molasses Manifesto here . . .
Yes Karp, we were listening! Thanks to our loyal photog, we're now totally sold on the Brooklyn drum & bass duo Hank and The Cupcakes . While we'll have more on this excellent group soon including some of Karp's own photos, we wanted to share this new video of the two covering the timeless Joy Division tune "She's Lost Control." What we've heard from Hank's seven track s/t EP combined with the accolades bestowed on their music and live show are enough to make even the most hardened bloggers stop and take notice. We're glad we did.

Thank God these kids put out this record. Underneath all the distortion-drenched artillery bursts, you hear the anger and disgust I feel for the music scene today. Putting this record on the turntable makes me feel the same way I felt being a 13-year-old shithead. I’m gonna go flip the record over and throw myself against the wall a few times.
Cate Le Bon: "Shoeing the Bones" Oh No Ono: "Internet Warrior" Oh No Ono: "Helplessly Young" Photos by Karp -- It was a welcome return to the Mercury Lounge for the Stark team as we headed out last week for what turned out to be a night filled with great music, but little sleep. We caught wind of opener Cate Le Bon , and were advised not to miss this rising Welsh songwriter. Luckily, we're good listeners. Le [...]

MP3: The Whip - Freelance Liaison MP3: The Whip - Sheep and Goat Judgement The Whip were 2/3 Karp and 1 part Thrones that left the world with only one incredible 7 inch after the passing of their drummer from a boating accident. This is that 7 inch. Get yer gashes ready and if you dig it (you dig it) buy it from Wantage USA right here . Fuck yeah!

Ok, so in the spirit my new lack of tonsils and the sad almost empty pain killer bottle (and the end of the year or whatever) I've put together a list of my most favoritist songs of the year. They are in no particular order and come complete with my ramblings. I'd have to say this was a ok year musically... There were certainly some really great new releases from bands old and new, but I think what really got me excited about music was all the concerts - (I've seen most of these artists this year and [...]
As I mentioned yesterday, my attention this year, as far as music goes, has been diverted in a variety of ways. Doing a 2009 playlist seemed to miss the thrust of what my year was all about (and probably redundant with every other blog out there); doing a collection of old yet new-to-me stuff would have missed all the music that wasn't new to me that I spent so much time with. So instead I offer this: a 75-track playlist that comes as close as I can to giving some impression of what my listening year has really [...]
