It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]
Not so much a Top 10 list, as there is plenty of music I haven't heard this year, but these 10 albums represent the discs that rarely made it out of rotation on my iPod or Spotify account. These are the albums that I turned to when I was happy, when I was caught in a blinding moment of despair, when I needed someone else's words to articulate the emotions swirling in my head, if only to allow me the chance to breathe in, breathe out, and steady the ship. Music has that power - to soothe, to [...]

Ian had a great post a little while ago about the changing face (for better or worse) of rock n roll. I'd like to present, humbly, some evidence that the old school stuff is alive and kicking. I don't mean a museum-piece classic rock band, but they do have that Lynyrd Skynyrd type of southern swagger that you never hear any more. At least, you wouldn't expect to hear it in Portland, OR, which this band calls home. This song is by far their most timeless. It's immediate and catchy (without straying into shameless-Tom-Petty-hook [...]

Series: Cluster 1 HANGOUT with Pepper Rabbit - Our Minneapolis correspondent Harley Brown takes Pepper Rabbit to the city's Midtown Global Market, where the three discuss lunch, the band's history, and the longevity of a name. Music Videos: Sufjan Steves - "Get Real, Get Right" - Hand-cut animation. Quite impressive. Kasey Anderson – "The Wrong Light" - A slow pan alongside a comic book-style image reveals that people are mutating into different creatures. Lira – "Phakade" - How [...]

Of late, I haven't been much of a concert-goer. Shows tend to last too late for me, and festivals are often too packed. However, I love small, local festivals! In July we caught What The Heck Fest in Anacortes. For August, there's Stanwood's very own Slow Roots Festival . For you locals, mark your calendar for the weekend of August 27 and 28, and get your Google Maps directions set for the Stanwood-Camano Community Fairgrounds. The music starts around noon and goes into the [...]

As anyone who got within earshot of me can attest, by the end of SxSW last year I had had it. Austin had defeated me. I was tired of being drunk, tired of walking and just plain tired. In a word, I was done. Well. Flash forward almost a year and I'm preparing to go do back an do the battle of attrition once again and we're bringing the party back! This year not only is the ninebullets.net party actually located downtown, it's also gonna be two days and featuring plenty on ninebullets.net regulars. You'll find all the [...]

Earlier this month, Portland's Kasey Anderson dropped another album in our hands. On Heart Of A Dog , he's backed by his band The Honkies. You can tell right off that Anderson has taken a slightly new path, one capitalizing in blues-oriented rock. He still has those drawl-tinged, country-like vocals, but Heart Of A Dog is heavier and greater in overall scope. "The Wrong Light", opening track from the new album, screams with wild, bluesy electric guitars wrought with distortion. And Anderson's vocals, too, seem more [...]

Once upon a time, Kasey wrote for ninebullets. During that time I wrote a piece about his album Nowhere Nights and I tried to make it a comical piece. Truth is, I wasn't sure how to review that album and not come off as shilling for the guy who writes for the web site, and as a result I did the album a discredit. Well that's no longer an issue. Kasey stopped writing for 9B a year or so ago for reasons still unknown to me. Don't get me wrong though, I'm far from bitter. Truth is, the [...]

(AIV Note: This was supposed to be posted yesterday but my dumb ass forgot to upload the podcast to the server. Der, I iz full of forgets....anyhow, enjoy.) Well, it might be a new year and I might have a radio show now but nothing really changes when it comes to the podcast. It starts nice enough and you might even be able to hear some improvement gleaned from doing a weekly radio show but it quickly devolves into a ½ drunk foul mouthed typical podcast. Don't let that deter you though. While my speech and [...]

From the opening sonic assault of "The Wrong Light," the leadoff track of Kasey Anderson's new album Heart of a Dog , it is clear that the Portland songwriter is going for something different on his fifth full-length record. The album begins with a barrage of fuzzed out guitars and an almost industrial sounding drum beat while Anderson's distorted vocals sing of kamikaze women and wolves at the window. The result is a much heavier sound than anything on Anderson's previous album Nowhere Nights. It actually reminds one a little bit of "Prelude" from [...]
I have to admit I was completely unfamiliar with Kasey Anderson prior to listening to his forthcoming album Heart of a Dog (out February 15th). I was familiar with the work of his backing band, The Honkies. The trio consists of Long Winters' Eric Conson and Andrew McKeag, as well as Mike Musburger who's played for a slew of northwestern bands, including my beloved Supersuckers. The album opens

My normal year-end favorite albums list usually tends to favor the bands/artists who I saw live in that year. This is only somewhat true for 2010. While The Hold Steady , The National, Drive-by Truckers , and Justin Townes Earle all had killer live gigs in Toronto this year, I just couldn't get into their 2010 releases (I didn't write a review of The National at Massey Hall on June 8 because every other blogger in Toronto did). Turns out that I tended to like some of the opening acts better than some [...]
