These three tracks came up on my mp3 player this morning, which was set to shuffle. (Baby was a good DJ this morning.) They're all older, but way ahead of their time. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill The Police - Bring on the Night Genesis - The Carpet Crawl (live)
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): Lucky Soul - Lips are Unhappy (mp3) [...]

Kate Bush's epic "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" remains one of her biggest hits, and has been covered many times over by a wide range of bands. Most notable is perhaps Placebo's version, which has gathered a reasonable amount of airplay in recent years. A more recent version is the haunting electronic take by Chromatics that just came out on their new album Night Drive . Check out the original and these two covers below. As a bonus, here's an Ashley Beedle remix of Kate's original, which elevates the drama and updates the electronics. [...]

Berlin'de doktoralarını yapan kuzenim ve eşi, on günlüğüne İstanbul 'a geldi.

our fourth mix of the season is admittedly a little weak...probably wouldn't throw this one on at a christmas party, but it's still a good listen for decorating the tree & wrapping presents & baking cookies & shit...a few standouts include songs from feist, william bell, rufus thomas & a young luther vandross...the luther track, in fact, is a straight up jam, & probably would have fit a little better on a more upbeat mix, but whatever...check it out. download: the leather canary xmas mix #4 [...]

Admitedly, I never paid overt attention to Kate Bush . I am familiar with Wuthering Heights and some of her more well-know songs, but have never checked very deep into her discography. However, the first single from her 1985 album Hounds Of Love has gotten the serious makeover treatment in the last few years and brought her back to the forefront of my attention. That's the great thing about a good cover song, it sometimes allows you to rediscover an artist from the past. [...]

British singer/songwriter icon Kate Bush is set to contribute with an original song titled "Lyra" to the end title credits of the upcoming fantasy movie The Golden Compass , starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig. The song will also be available for download as part of the soundtrack, which will be released December 11. Named after the lead character in The Golden Compass, "Lyra" is written and produced by Kate in her own studio, and features the Magdalen College Choir, Oxford. The movie itself is based on Philip Pullman's book with the same [...]

Give us a peace equal to the war Or else our souls will be unsatisfied, And we will wonder what we have fought for And why the many died. Give us a peace of accepting every challenge -- The challenge of the poor, the black, of all denied, The challenge of the vast colonial world That long has had so little justice by its side. Give us a peace that dares us to be wise. Give us a peace that dares us to be strong. Give us a peace that dares us still uphold Throughout the [...]

Taken from this lavvy wall This week Contrast Podcast ventures into the realm of mortal sin by inviting us all to wade waist-deep in a steaming, roiling pool of thick, viscous, musical... LUUUST!!! *Pant, pant, drool, quiver* Ahem. Er, I'd best make this very quick, lest it get messy. Download the podcast here and prepared to get all hot 'n' bothered. Just have a cold shower running on standby, and watch out for the two dirty old [...]

Thanks for bearing with me through High School Week. Picking five songs to represent those four years was ridiculously hard. On Monday I'll be slamming you back into the present tense, so make sure your pants are on tight. Hounds Of Love was a two-part album - side one was some great songs, and side two was "The Ninth Wave," a concept half-album about what's going through a woman's mind as she's lost and drowning at sea. I must have listened to that side about a million times. Here's [...]
The Barons - "Some Kind of Fool" The Barons blushed when the Baronesses from whose wombs they sprung first heard "Some Kind of Fool." Not because of the messiness of the beginning (a cacophony of skittering guitars, clanging cymbals, booming tom drums) - no, the Baronesses had long been accustomed to the Barons' untidiness, particularly as manifest in the carelessly strewn laundry that covered their bedrooms, neatened nightly by the titled matrons since the baby barons' births - but because of the dirtiness of the slow and syncopated guitar line that appears at the half-minute mark and, despite [...]

Narcicyst from Euphrates So here's what's been happening over the past couple of days. 1) I go to class. 2) I procrastinate during class. 3) I come home, procrastinate some more, and 4) I turn on my computer, and realize that Football Manager 2007 is sitting on my desktop, waiting to be played. Keep in mind I have a pile of work to do, not to mention a blog to run. What would you do? If you would play Football Manager 2007 above everything else, good choice. [...]
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (Ashley Beedle Edit) OK, I have a whole string of rather wonderful, unreleased eddity things to share, kicking off with this respectful rejig of the Kate Bush classic. Something that made my blood boil is this horrific Yootoob footage of a guy in the States basically getting tasered the day before yesterday in front of a room full of people for asking John Kerry difficult questions about his involvement with Bush in some Yale secret [...]
We're calling this Cenobite chic. Seriously, this fashion stuff is easy.

Yesterday I was taken to the Charlbury street music festival. Charlbury is a small Cotswolds village not to far away from Oxford. Unfortunately this year they were hit quite heavily by the floods that have been ripping through the UK this summer but have managed to get that behind them and host a rather awesome free music and crafts festival. The height of the celebrations revolved around an Irish ban who brought dancy folk country music to the masses, and everyone jigged till the early hours! This brought me to ponder the use of Irish music in popular music and [...]
