Good voice + good songs + lousy production = ho-hum. "Lo-fi" is a term designed for records like this. Possessed of an expressive if not especially powerful voice, Kate Maki sings tunes that evoke heartbreak, longing and disappointment-not necessarily in that order-to the accompaniment of a range of instrumental sounds. Apart from the expected guitars and piano, there are contributions from accordion and organ, as well as harmonized vocals on nearly every track. Despite the sonic variety, there is a thinness to the recording that...

I started doing this almost exactly nine years ago. That is, if you don't count mix tapes-then it's, like, 25 years. Weird, huh? A litttle while back I reviewed Moonshine , the LP from Kate Maki , and I mentioned that my introduction to her was through a collaboration she did with Frederick Squire . After that, I learned that, not only do they collaborate on music, but in life, too: I hear they're a couple and are soon to be expecting a baby. They wrap up their tour promoting both Moonshine and Squire's latest, Frederick Squire Sings Shenandoah and Other Popular Hits this coming weekend [...]
It's safe to say, it wouldn't feel like a Tuesday if there weren't some folk music on MTIB. For this particular Tuesday, that void will be filled with the throwback-folk stylings of the magnificent Kate Maki. Although her music has just recently met my ears, I can already tell the two are going to be friends. Probably the most interesting thing about Ms. Maki is the fact that she is a

Kate Maki has a unique non-musical résumé. According to Wikipedia , she has a degree in neuroscience, and her press materials say that she's a "grade school teacher by day, songwriter by night." I'm not quite sure how a neuroscientist becomes a grade school teacher, nor how a grade school teacher becomes a songwriter, but in any case—her songs are an awesomely authentic take on classic folk. With its bare-bones recording style and gorgeous home-spun harmonies, her song "Lose My Mind" could easily pass for a traditional folk standard. [...]

Reading Kate Maki 's biography, I get the sense that she and I are kindred spirits. Both us of are grade school teachers by day, and spend our evenings and nights pursuing a creative calling. Moonshine is her fifth record, a sometimes delicate, introspective country/folk record that is as effortless as it is engaging. "The Signal" is the kind of song that's perfect for quiet nights alone: a little boozy, lovelorn ditty that sparks memories and emotions that usually stay buried while the sun is out. "Boredom Blues" is a classic [...]

Sorry for the delay this week's chart since I was busy on the weekend. Here is this week's chart and so far no change and still is "F**ked Up" (No pun intended). Another new song from the upcoming “David Comes To Life” was release, so why not make it another week at #1. Don't forget that album drops on June 7th. New debuts from Kate Maki (June 10th in Ottawa) and Washed Out and a re-entry from Fleet Foxes due to the full album being released. Check it out! [...]

Canadian Kate Maki is leading a double life: grade school teacher by day, folkie by night. Her fifth album, Moonshine is a testament to the power and beauty to be found in simplicity. Two days. A basement. A handful of friends. And a single microphone. The result is one of the most candid and exciting country/folk releases of the year, highly recommended for anyone clamoring for the next Gillian Welch record, and a surefire elixir to whatever Nashville is passing off as country music these days. [...]

One room and a group of friends singing, playing, eating, and drinking. It's easy to see why the cozy confines of a house party are as an oasis for musicians in traveling in today's troubled economic times. The vibe of the room influences everything; the sound, the energy, even the songs that get played. The saddest songs sound better when sung together, and the chill of the studio is taken out of the air. For under appreciated Sudbury songwriter Kate Maki and her new record Moonshine , the room and the [...]

You probably already know that The Duke likes posting about Canadian musicians. You probably already know that The Duke likes posting folk music. Which makes posting this new song from Kate Maki a double whammy. Kate is a school teacher by trade and a songwriter for love. Her songs lean on the old-time folk based chords and melodies, making them sound timeless. The instrumentation on "Moonshine" (the new album) is basic, sparse (Drums, upright bass, guitars, pedal steel, piano, organ, accordion). Kate's vocals shine through the mix. Her voice reminds me a little [...]

My cup of sympathy runneth over. Kate Maki is a school teacher by day, songwriter by…the spare milliseconds you have when you’re not preparing and grading and cutting and gathering and filing and computering. The sympathy comes from the dichotomy that a daytime world of children brings you. Being an educator myself (confession, not a [...]
