A litttle while back I reviewed Moonshine , the LP from Kate Maki , and I mentioned that my introduction to her was through a collaboration she did with Frederick Squire . Kate Maki has a unique non-musical rsum. According to Wikipedia , she has a degree in neuroscience, and her press materials say that she's a "grade school teacher by day, songwriter by night." I'm not quite sure how a neuroscientist becomes a grade school teacher, nor how a grade school teacher becomes a songwriter, but in any caseher songs are an awesomely authentic take on classic folk. With its bare-bones recording style and gorgeous home-spun harmonies, her song "Lose My Mind" could easily pass for a traditional folk standard. Reading Kate Maki 's biography, I get the sense that she and I are kindred spirits. Both us of are grade school teachers by day, and spend our evenings and nights pursuing a creative calling.
