I first realised that Irish bands could hold their own in the music world when I discovered bands like Rollerskate Skinny, Mexican Pets, Whipping Boy, Compulsion. Some of the Irish music from that time still mean an awful lot to me. Here's a mix of songs that are around a decade old or older that you can still find on the internet and in some cases can still buy. I hope you find a few good songs in the mix! Happy St. Patrick's Day! Juniper - The World is Dead [...]

The daily running order went online today for Cork's wonderful music festival happening over the June Bank Holiday. I have my early birds bought but I still think this is the best line-up for a festival in Ireland and therefore worth your hard earned cash. Tickets here: http://www.eventelephant.com/c ork-x-south-west-festival-2011 Check out some of the performers here: God is an Astronaut [...]

It's surely more understatement than hyperbole to suggest that Nick Drake was a man before his time. The Cambridge dropout who found Dylan and dope more engaging than his studies certainly impressed the members of Fairport Convention, who would go on to support his 1969 debut Five Leaves Left in the studio, but he only confused British audiences, who found the chronically depressed insomniac anxious and disengaged, and his ecologically-grounded poetics and organic chorus-less songs completely anathema to the world of sea shanties and traditional brit-folk with which they were familiar. [...]
We had a Mic Christopher tribute night in Boyles Slane last night in an attempt to turn something stupid [ie Arthurs Day] into something amazing. And amazing it was. The first hour saw some of Irelands most talented songwriters taking turns to play the whole of Mic Christopher's Skylarkin. It got me thinking of my favourite cover versions! Gemma Hayes - No Ordinary Love Recorded live for Today FM at the end of 2005 No Ordinary Love is performed majestically by Gemma Hayes and makes it her own. [...]

Photo by Laurent Mellet This song comes from Katell Keineg's fourth album, At the Mermaid Parade , but this Brittany-born, Welsh-raised, Ireland- and New York-dwelling songwriter is news to my ears. This song is groovy and has some pretty hilarious lyrics, and really stands out on the album. While the rest of the songs are witty and intriguing, none really packs the punch of this one, partly thanks to the bass. Katell Keineg - "World Of Sex" Buy [...]

I've had Katell Keineg's 'At The Mermaid Parade' a number of weeks now and it's been played pretty much non stop. It's preventing me from getting other reviews done because I can't stop playing the album! Katell was born in Brittany and raised in Cardiff and the only daughter of Breton poet and playwright Paol Keineg and his then wife, Judith, a Welsh political activist and schoolteacher. Katell qualifies for coverage on the blog because she lived in Dublin for well over a decade and because I've been a massive fan since her majestic debut [...]

I love it when great news drops into my inbox and a new Katell Keineg album is great news. Here's the details from the email: Katell Keineg’s new album “At The Mermaid Parade”, her fourth, is being released on March 29th 2010. Outside N. and S. America, it will be released by Honest Jon’s Records, a London based label co-owned by Damon Albarn of Gorillaz and Blur and the legendary Honest Jon's record shop. Within N. and S. America things are still being finalised, It’ll probably be self-released through CD [...]

Wild Weekend time again... With the For The Sake Of The Song iPod on shuffle and the eyes on the prize. The outcome? A sixpack of tunes exclusively picked by the ghost in the machine. Here we go. And we´re off, with those blokes you can trust. "It was smaller than a cow, it was bigger than a cat..." Yup, the Cosmic Psychos are here, tackling a typically Australian phenomenon: a dead roo. Which is followed by the exquisite pairing of John Coltrane on tenor sax and Don Cherry on trumpet, performing [...]

The wonderful Katell Keineg has been adeed to this amazing Homelights line-up!
Recently uploaded is a video from a 2006 performance from Katell in The Living Room, NYC. The song is 'There You Go' which is the final track from Katell's second album Jet. As reported in this week's Hot Press, Katell has released an EP of new material in the US and is now living back in Wales. Fingers crossed for some Dublin dates soon. http://www.katellkeineg.com/

I wrote about the amazing Katell Keineg gig we were at in Whelans over ten years ago in the comment section over on 'On The Record' and the comment appeared in 'The Ticket' last Friday. Katell has been busy working on her forth album and releasing an EP in New York. Alot of readers might be unaware of how wonderful a talent Katell Keineg is. Here is a cover that was a b-side of the EP 'What's the only thing Worst than the End of Time?' Katell Keineg - River Man [Nick [...]

Whelans has hit the milestone of 20 years and is celebrating with a series of gigs in the coming months starting tonight with the first of Mundy's three gigs. I predict Friday night will be mad in Whelans with Mundy downstairs and Groom in the upstairs venue. There's no doubt that Whelans is a special little venue that has accomondated many of Ireland's best artists as well as some of the very best International acts. The list includes Jeff Buckley, Townes Van Zandt, The Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, The National, David Gray and hundreds more. Here are my own personal [...]
