It's been a long time since I made a mix so here is an Easter Mix. All of these tunes are reflective and thought-provoking on this important religious holiday. I do the Ruby Sessions night on a Tuesday evening in a cosy venue in the middle of Dublin. The problem is being a father the chances of getting out on a Tuesday night is slim but when I go I absolutely love it! I have seen Duke Special, Katell Keineg, Terry Sutton, Ann Scott, Bill Coleman, Jenny Lydfords, Aortal and The Bottom Floor Band. The €6 cover charge goes straight to The Simon Community. Here are some performances from The Ruby Sessions! Una Healy - Sorry Ray Heffernan - Stardust [...]

Just like most things Glen Hansard does, the relationship split from Marketa Irglova has arrived into the public domain in a very low key way. He recently answered a question from an Australian journalist stating ..... ..... "We had made the film. We had gone through so much with the Oscar. Of course, we fell into each other's arms. It was a very necessary part of our friendship but I think we both concluded that that wasn't what we really wanted to do. So we're not together now. We are just really good friends." ...... ..... I'll start with the end. This is the final post on Mixtape4melfi. I have a new Irish Music only blog 2 U I Bestow which I think has a more specific purpose in the hope of promoting Irish bands. I'm inspired to do this because I feel it is a major injustice if the music world doesn't get to know about Mark Dignam . 1. Mark Dignam - Glide Mark was centre of Dublin's busking scene in the post Joshua Tree pre Economic Boom Ireland. Mark busked with Glen Hansard, Mic [...]

I love the fact that music is such a subjective thing. I don't do reviews on this blog for the reason that I don't want to write negatively about any form of subjective art. With music, I believe most people listen to music which reflects their position in life. It is a rare thing to find that album. The album that you believe was written just for you in the exact moment in time. In the past I think Pearl Jam's Ten, Katell Keineg's O Seasons, O Castles and Mark Dignam's Poetry & Songs from the Wheel are the albums [...]

Katell Keineg is one of my favourite singers whose debut album I still listen to regularly with affection. Here is the bio on her website : "Since the early nineties Keineg has been musically active in both Ireland and the United States, steadily emerging into one of the most inspiring and deeply moving performers around. Born in Brittany and brought up in Wales, Keineg now lives in Dublin and is a frequent visitor to New York. In 1993, while building her reputation for "conveying a nearly beatific sense of joy in performance"(Los Angeles Times), she released a [...]

It's not a beautiful day in Michigan, with wind, cold rain and lightning, so there's plenty of time to tell the Katell Keineg story. Daughter of a Breton poet and Welsh schoolteacher and current resident of Dublin (Ireland, not Ohio), Keineg received heavy-duty critical and music industry acclaim in the 1990s. Elektra released two of her albums, she was close friends with the late Jeff Buckley, and she worked with Iggy Pop and Natalie Merchant (not at the same time). Since then she's put out albums on indie labels Field Recording Co. and Megaphone Music, been adored [...]

Quite an excellent article about singer-songwriter Katell Keineg today in the NY Times Sunday Magazine. It's the story of a one-time "it" singer-songwriter (and very deserving of "it" - however you define that) who still has it despite the cluelessness of labels attempting to support artists as good as Ms. Keineg and the sadness that is the state of the music business today and its impact on artists. The write of the article Darcy Frey succinctly sums it up: "Despite [...]
