On " Calgary ," Justin Vernon's vocals lay in a cloud of gloomy synths and anxious electric guitar tones, suggesting a sonic shift from the grainy For Emma formula. But not too much has changed - the ghostly falsetto remains Bon Iver's calling card. JV's voice has also been unmistakable on recent collaborations (GAYNGS, Volcano Choir, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ) and an asset when he takes on someone else's song. So I'm especially looking forward to the "Calgary" 123 b-side, a combined cover of two Bonnie Raitt classics, "I Can't Make You Love Me" > [...]
30 Day Song Challenge: Day 18 - A Song I Wish I Heard On the Radio.
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards , Junos Chris Young, CP There was plenty of gear at Toronto's Ricoh Coliseum, just not the type usually affiliated with Canadian musicians. The Juno Cup, an annual celebrity hockey game pitting former National Hockey League players (NHL Greats) against a team of Canadian artists (The Rockers), held its practice Thursday afternoon to prepare for the big game tonight. And for Billy Talent [...]

I came across these two amazing videos of Kathleen Edwards last week and just had to share them with you. The lighting on these is pretty cool. I wish the whole concert had been recorded this way.
By now you’ve probably heard Justin Vernon of Bon Iver’s collaboration with Kanye West, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, and Nicki Minaj, “Monster,” but the summer isn’t (technically) over for the Eau Claire singer-songwriter just yet: Vernon performed with Kathleen Edwards on at least two stops along her recent tour, joining the Canadian alt-country songstress for Failer cut “Mercury” (which he’s covered before ). In addition to onstage collaborations with Vernon, Edwards played covers of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon track “From Hank to Hendrix” and Ryan Adams-penned, Whiskeytown standout “Houses on the Hill.” [...]

This Kathleen Edwards cover is just stunningly gorgeous. My good friend Dainon pointed me in the direction of his Salt Lake City musician friends Paul Jacobsen & The Madison Arm yesterday afternoon, and so I spent the rest of my next three hours at work intermittently working on a spreadsheet and clicking play every five minutes and twenty nine seconds. The piano echoes as if this was recorded in a sad, empty room. My friend Kathleen ruminated today, "Isn't that song just like someone draws the [...]

We're back from our Florida vacation not much worse for wear, though the long slog home from anywhere proves a perennial challenge, and reentry into the world of work and chores is always bittersweet. Still, the heart is light, and for that, I owe my family a great debt: to my father for making it all possible, to my children for helping me see the world as ever wondrous through their eyes, and most of all, to my spouse for planning the hell out of yet another perfect Spring Break. Case in point: [...]

Facebook There was welcome and unexpected news in the inbox yesterday morning with the announcement that Sarah Harmer was back. It didn't seem like she'd been away that long, but now that I think about it, the last time I saw her in any context was at Wolfe Island in 2007 with the reunited Weeping Tile , and it's been almost five years since the release of her last album I'm A Mountain . So June 22, when her latest effort Oh Little Fire [...]

All of this Olympic curling talk made me dig out my DVD of the Canadian comedy Men With Brooms . Starring cutie Paul Gross , who also co-wrote and directed it, the movie follows four men trying to seek personal and professional redemption on the curling sheet. Throw in a love triangle, goofy Leslie Nielsen , a huge dude in a kilt, a cameo by the Tragically Hip , curling cheerleaders, and a folk o' beavers, and you have yourself one hell of a slice of Canadiana. The ironic part of this [...]

Canadiana Week draws to a close now, and I hope you've enjoyed learning more about some of our friends from the North. During the week, I tried to focus on new music from some newer and less well known artists. Of course, I don't want to neglect anyone... so I thought I'd close the week by highlighting a few of my old favorites. Since the week was mostly female dominated, we'll start today with Luke Doucet. Luke is a singer/songwriter from Halifax who is also phenomenally talented on the [...]

Kathleen Edwards: 5 Years [ purchase ] Most of us, myself included, came to Kathleen Edwards' music through her 2003 debut album, Failer . Few people, though, are aware of her true debut effort. Building 55 was self released in 1999 and limited to a quantity of only 500 pressings. The EP is the work of an artist who is clearly still finding her way [...]
I've compiled a largely personal, largely random, and mostly just large list of the albums that I consider to be the best of the aughts. And this isn't it! Unsurprisingly, there were a lot of solid candidates that didn't quite make the final cut, so, by way of practice, I offer them up to you here, my five also-ran's of the last ten years, in loose chronological order.JACK JOHNSONJack Johnson's "

Another of my favourite artists from the last decade is Canadian singer / songwriter Kathleen Edwards, her first full length Failer was released in 2003 and became an instant favourite of mine, it was followed by Back to Me in 2005 and Asking for Flowers in 2008 both of which featured in my favourite albums of the respective years. Prior to the release of Failer Kathleen released a [...]
What is it that makes us want to deconstruct art by units of time? Lists. We love making them. We love arguing over them. And here, on the verge of a new decade, we’re in a position to do the same again. What were the best albums of the past ten years? Here at AD, we [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada Most of us have one or two really talented friends. Y'know, those_thumbnail.gifted, smart and charming folks who make you feel like an untalented rube. In one way, I like to think of Kathleen Edwards as the female Neil Young. OK, Edwards is prettier, younger, slimmer, and to my knowledge has only ever recorded one guitar solo of her own, while her male compatriot is of course famed for his massively extended live ones. But they share much commonality of spirit. It is her view of the human condition, and how she expresses it lyrically and in music, that puts Kathleen Edwards right up there. [...]

Released in 2005, Kathleen Edwards' sophomore effort Back to Me had some big shoes to fill in attempting to live up to her debut album Failer . All that album did was get nominated for "Album of the Year" at the Americana Music Awards (Kathleen lost to Johnny Cash), prompt the AMA to create a "Best New/Emerging Artist" category the following year, and place the Canadian songstress on the map as a new and important voice in Americana music. Fortunately, Back to Me was able to live up [...]
