Ottawa-born folkie Kathleen Edwards tapped boyfriend / tour mate /Bon Iver head Justin Vernon to help create the lonesome sound that was last month's single, Wapusk . The collaborative nature doesn't stop there, though, as Vernon and a slew of other artists also leave their mark on Edwards' upcoming new album, Voyageur . Co-produced by Vernon and Edwards herself, the record sees the Wisconsin resident also play banjo, guitar, xylophone, bass, and piano. Additional cameos include Norah Jones, Phil Cook (Megafaun), Sean Carey (also of Bon Iver), Stornoway, and Francis [...]

Frank Yang Just as a point of reference, when someone IMs you late on a Friday afternoon and asks, "do you want to go see Feist at the CBC's Glenn Gould Studio tomorrow night?", the only appropriate answer is yes. And so it was that after assuming that it'd be too much trouble to finagle one of the hottest tickets in a long weekend with no shortage of hot tickets, one was handed to me. No I'm not bragging. Okay I'm bragging a little. But the point being that I didn't expect [...]

Voyageur, the new record from acclaimed musician Kathleen Edwards, will be released January 17, 2012 on MapleMusic Recordings. Produced by Edwards and Justin Vernon, the ten-track album includes "Change the Sheets," which was featured on Edwards' recent 73 Wapusk. Of the two-song release, Stereogum proclaimed, "hushed, fragile, ridiculously pretty...," while Spin praised, "...tranquil and icy-bright as its inspiration." In advance of the release, Edwards is currently in the midst of a European tour with Bon Iver. Voyageur was recorded between August 2010 and May 2011 in Fall Creek, Wisconsin and Toronto, Canada. In addition to Vernon (who provides [...]

Kathleen Edwards has got some new music on the way. She drops her new album, 'Voyageur', next year, but before that there's the small matter of her new 7'', the exquisitely thoughtful folk tune 'Wapusk', which features none other than Bon Iver. It's out on October 17 and you can listen to it below.

While Wapusk may be one of Canada's umpteen National Parks, it's also the A-side to a 7" release from Ontario's Kathleen Edwards , and a sumptuous cockle-warming affair it is too. Lifted from her forthcoming fourth LP Voyageur, Edwards' husked vocals sound as if they're drifting out from a frosted cabin, creeping through the verdant foliage of a damp forest like condensed breath in search of warmth. Fitting then that Edwards produced the track alongside Justin Vernon, who lends hushed harmonies to its latter half. As sparse as a motionless midnight at the foot of a moonless canyon, Wapusk [...]

Justin Vernon is a busy man these days. When he's not working on his main project, Bon Iver , he can be found humbly stood to the side of the stage with one Kanye West or forming collaborations with James Blake. It seems you can't avoid his sublime tones, whatever genre you prefer. Due to his newfound status as an icon to the musical masses, it's nice to see he's still rooted to music at its heart as he's now featuring on Kathleen Edwards ' new [...]

Once again a singer/songwriter from Canada manages to invade my mind and senses. This time it is the enticing Kathleen Edwards who is on the verge of releasing a 73 titled Wapusk . The story behind the title? Edwards tells of her journey to the small isolated village Wapusk, where polar bears spend their sunny summer days lazing on Hudson Bay. Sounds like the perfect spot to write a song. The new album was produced alongside talented fellow canadian Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). He definitely leaves an impression, providing backing vocals on the title track [...]
Bon Iver will be taking their new album - weirdly titled 'Bon Iver' - out with them on the road this October and November. Support will come from Canadian singer/songwriter Kathleen Edwards , who recently collaborated with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon in a single to be released in mid-October (the single review from Braden will post midday tomorrow). Wednesday 19th October 2011 - Manchester O2 Apollo Saturday 22nd October 2011 - Edinburgh Usher Hall Monday 24th October 2011 - London Hammersmith Apollo [...]
We're always expecting interesting things from Canadian singer/songwriter Kathleen Edwards . But now, with word that her new January 17 album Voyageur is something of a collaboration with new beau Justin "Bon Iver" Vernon, we're really expecting something interesting. Lead single "Change the Sheets" leaves her usual folky and alt-country trapping on the dusty wayside for a song that sounds like it would be perfect fit for some lost Fleetwood Mac Rumours -era track. Vernon's co-production brings in some subtle echoing electronic pulses while Edwards sweet/tart vocals have never sounded [...]

I stumbled upon this track while checking my emails today, and I was blown away. Kathleen Edwards is not an artist I have been acquainted with before, but here is the blurb from the press release to give you the basics! I would suggest you get in early if you are lucky enough to be at one of the Bon Iver shows. Wapusk , a new 7-inch from acclaimed musician Kathleen Edwards, will be released on Zoë/Rounder Records October 17th ahead of her 2012 brand new album 'Voyageur'. Advance copies of the record will [...]

Justin Vernon certainly has a thing for the discerning female singer-songwriter. Back in 2008, during the height of the For Emma, Forever Ago tour, Bon Iver would often close their set with a stirring cover of 'Lovin's For Fools' - a song written by the criminally overlooked Sarah Siskind. So taken with Siskind's work in fact, Vernon took her out on the road throughout the tail end of his UK and Europe tour as main opening act. I was lucky enough to witness the pair play the song live at London's Victoria [...]

Kathleen Edwards - Change The Sheets

Kathleen Edwards - Wapusk

I know the interwebs have been all abuzz with this new Kathleen Edwards single. Her headed to Justin Vernon's studio and recorded the album with Mr. Iver himself. As stated before, I am not much of a Bon fan. Also, as stated before, I am a HUGE Kathleen Edwards fan. Her debut album - Failer - may be one of the all-time great debuts. Her fourth album - Voyageur - doesn't come out until January. So she is releasing a nice 73 with the song below to hold us over. From the [...]
Kathleen Edwards really doesn't need the Bon Iver endorsement to sell what she's creating, but with Vernon's rise to mainstream fame this year, it certainly isn't a bad thing. Her latest 7" 'Wapusk' / 'Change the Sheets' was Recorded in Fall Creek, Wisconsin and Toronto, Ontario and produced by Vernon and the lady herself. Have a listen to the title track here, which also features backing vocals from the cabin loving man.
By the time Kathleen Edwards' forthcoming album, Voyageur, sees the light of day early next January, it will have been almost four years since her last album, Asking For Flowers. A complete travesty for those of us who have had her records in constant rotation since her debut LP in 2003. But thankfully the first [...]
