The week leading up to Yom Kippur, The Jewish Day of Atonement, is supposed to be a time for self-reflection, culminating in repentance and a plea for pardon. And though I no longer fast, or belong to a temple, in the last few years, I have continued to use the opportunity as a chance to take stock of the soul, wandering into the woods or just taking a few hours on the front porch alone to make peace with the world both inside and out. This year, it doesn't take much soul-searching to [...]
Waterson and Knight are the children of the late Lal Waterson, and the Waterson/ Carthy influence is very evident in the musical, vocal and lyrical phrasing of this charmingly nostalgic debut. The album starts gently, with guitar and voice tracks peppered lightly with violin, piano and harmony voices - those on 'Father Us' provided by Kathryn Williams, who co-wrote that track and closer 'Secret Smile'.'Curse the Day' (a short ode to PMT) changes the mood with its shifting, traditional folk inspired rhythm; and the instrumentation builds up on 'The Loosened Arrow', which showcases marvellous vocal interplay between Waterson and guest [...]

Tweet The Crayonettes are a new project from Kathryn Williams and Anna Spencer , where they make "songs for children and robots" . Readers of Eardrums should already know Kathryn Williams lovely folk-songs. Anna Spencer was unknown to me, but according to the press release, she has played in the punk band Delicate Vomit. Together, they will release "Playing Out - Songs for Children and Robots" on One Little Indian on September 6, with titles like "Robots [...]

Here's some fun to cap off our Summer 2010 Vacation Coverfolk series: just as we've moved on from California to Oregon, crossing the state line for a final week with friends and family, so did these well-known boundary-pushing artists leave the long, banana-shaped state of their birth to settle north of the border, helping make the "Portland scene" the vibrant hotbed of music it became in the wake of the indie and folk revivals of the post-grunge late nineties. Funk-fusion banjo player and bandleader Tony [...]
Kathryn Williams and the truth of the summer sun. Kathryn Williams - Music - Arts - Education - United States

It's been a long while since I've done the Graboid, so I imagine the aftermath of the 4th of July weekend is as best a time of any to shake any kind of rust off. In the time between posts, I've pretty much managed to completely lose track of album releases in the past month or so. If everyone doesn't mind, I'd rather just start from scratch with a brand new week rather than dredge through everything I've missed. It sucks, but it's a task that I just don't want to sit through. Anyways, like [...]

The Death Pit Makeup Monsters - "Rude Romantique" By way of analogous example, take for instance that time in childhood when you're in the grocery store or a museum or an outdoor crowd, and it's winter. A lot of people have that similar brown thigh-length coat with the fur-lined hood and by accident you follow the wrong person, thinking it's your parent. Until finally, you think of something to say, tug on the grungy edging of that coat and the person turns around with this [...]

Kathryn Williams ' new project The Crayonettes release their debut album 'Playing Out - Songs For Children & Robots' on One Little Indian Records 6th September 2010. The Crayonettes are Kathryn Williams - "Without doubt one of the most authentic folk voices in the country" ( Q Magazine ) and Anna Spencer - formerly of punk band Delicate Vomit ; two mums weary of the traditional 'children's cd' format, those well meant but over-earnest singalongs performed inevitably in [...]

It's been uncharacteristically warm lately, feeling like summer and making me long for folksy tunes to accompany those drives in the car with the windows down as the sun sets. These few tracks have been on rotation as of late. Check them out to see if they're to your liking.Honeymoon by Bombadil [mp3] (iTunes)I Could Die Looking At You by Jordie Lane [mp3]It Ain't Easy by Abigail Washburn [mp3] (

Not sure what happened, but this evening after supper and a nap I woke up shivery and dizzy and speech-blurred, face burning, my arms and head heavy as if not my own. Oddly, I know this particular feverish feeling - more than anything, from memories of the dreadest of still-drunk hangovers - but as I haven't had a drink in weeks, I'm forced to consider that either I've suddenly developed food poisoning from this evening's fish & chips, or my body has decided to rebel against my schedule. Maybe I've been pushing myself too hard. [...]

Folk/indie songstress Kathryn Williams returns with her new album The Quickening and it is a blinding affair. Opening track 50 White Lines starts off sounding like Paranoid Android by Radiohead and even throughout the track with the robotic male backing vocal counting white lines, it sounds as though it could have come off OK Computer. Williams' voice is sweet and delicate and there is an almost child-like quality to it, so no matter what she sings, it ends up sounding like a lullaby. While the album [...]
After a decade's worth of exceptionally fine new-folk albums, a Mercury prize nomination and stacks of glowing reviews, Liverpudlian songstress Kathryn Williams continues to fly, inexplicably, under the radar, known and loved mainly by a loyal legion of U.K. fans and smitten critics. Forthcoming new album The Quickening, arriving in Europe February 22 (no U.S. release yet), may set the record straight with a new label - One Little Indian - and some excellent pre-release buzz ("the most accomplished album of her career", trumpets Wears The Trousers ). New project follows her wonderful 2008 collaboration [...]

If there is one thing I'm good at in life it is making mistakes. Kathryn Williams "All Apologies" (Nirvana Cover)

I mentioned the other day that I "had" to make a mixtape because I lost a bet and I put up a few songs from it. After thinking about it (and asking a few friends), I decided to go ahead and post the whole thing. So here it is in its entirety. I call it "Snow Mix." How original is that? It's not got much to do with snow, actually, but I didn't know what else to call it! The Sweet Serenades -- "Mona Lee" [...]
