Apparently we're doing back to back Flashbacks. Though yesterday's somewhat tragic post was a bit unplanned, today's proper Flashback Friday revisting of The Love Cats by The Cure was inspired by a recent jazzy electronic soul version by Kinny . Kinny shares space with the likes of Alice Russell, Belleruche, Nostalgia 77 and more on the utterly excellent Tru Thoughts label, which has gotten into the awesome habit of breaking new artists via some uncommon sounding downtempo covers. So even though we featured a [...]

Katrine Ottosen is the Copenhagen-via-NYC artist known as CALLmeKAT. She recently released a new video for the single, "Sunny Day", taken from her upcoming sophomore album, Where The River Turns Black , that includes guest appearances from Erika Spring (Au Revoir Simone) and Helgi Jonsson (Sigur Ros). Much like its title, "Sunny Day" is a bright new tune that perfectly showcases Ottosen's delicate but enchanting vocals. Watch CALLmeKAT's video for "Sunny Day" below. Read more »
Hollywood, Mon Amour is a new collection by Nouvelle Vague producer Marc Collins featuring covers of 1980s movie songs performed by former Morcheeba singer Skye, Juliette Lewis, Brazil's Cibelle, Katrine Ottosen, and Yael Naim among others. Former Morcheeba vocalist Skye transforms Blondie's "Call Me" with mellow acoustics and Reggae rhythms, and lends her voice to a bossa nova version of Duran Duran's Bond theme "A View To A Kill". I'm not usually a fan of the latter's Starbucks style, but Skye's voice is [...]
Hollywood, Mon Armour is the latest project of Marc Collin, the man behind Nouvelle Vague. This time around, he relies on several chanteuses like Skye Edwards (former Morcheeba singer), Cibelle, Yael Naim, Juliette Lewis... to reinterpret '80s movie theme songs. The idea sounds promising on paper, but the actual practice turned out to be not as thrilling. My main problem with the album is that the novelty has lost its sheen. It sounds exactly like what I'd expect it to be. The production is too repetitive to listen to all in one sitting. The tone is just so...monotonous. Now [...]

For those of you out there who are Nouvelle Vague fans, Marc Collin has decided to break out on a project of his own titled Hollywood, Mon Amour . Instead of taking the Bossa Nova road though, this time around it's all about the 80's, and specifically film songs, many which are near and dear to all of our hearts and some of which might have slipped by you the first time around. Also different than his previous work are the vocalists for this foray into the past including Australia's Nadeah , Britain's – [...]

Bat for Lashes – A Forest (The Cure Cover) ( mp3 ) Katrine Ottosen – The Love Cats (The Cure Cover) ( [...]
