Yes In My Backyard is a semiweekly column showcasing MP3s from new and emerging local talent. New York art-proggos Kayo Dot have broken metal's final taboo. Sure, they've been living on the blee... Continue reading "Premiere: Kayo Dot, "Whisper Ineffable" " >
maudlin of the Well is a progressive rock outfit. They're artsy. The band's production is clean. The musician ship is disciplined. The orchestrations are lush. However, it's not overproduced. There's nothing I hate more than overproduced prog. I'm looking at you Porcupine Tree.motW started in the mid-90s, and "broke up" in 2003. "Broke up" means the band suffered a lineup change and switched their

Though we won't see the new album from Kayo Dot (entitled Coyote ) until it's released by Hydra Head in February of 2010, the band do have a single US tour date currently scheduled and it just happens to be in New York City. On October 9, the band will play at Drom; we hope the show offers a good preview of the new album! It's not as though Kayo Dot are taking it easy, they're just touring Europe (those dates are all after the jump). Kayo Dot tour dates: Sep [...]

Dia 24 no Paços Manuel, no Porto, e em Coimbra, no dia seguinte, no Teatro Estúdio do CITAC.
SPYLACOPA began as an obscure ambient-electronic side-project for Brooklyn-based CANDIRIA guitarist John LaMaccia, but after accruing a band of notables - namely Greg Puciato of DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, Jeff Caxide of ISIS, and Julie Christmas of MADE OUT OF BABIES - the project was bound to gain momentum. Judging by the sounds of the new [...]
Like my e-comrade Vince, I too am planning to check out Canadian stoner/doom/mammal metallurgists Bison B.C. at tomorrow night's CMJ Metal Blade/Relapse/Lifeforce showcase at Knitting Factory (Also playing: Psyopus, Tombs, This Or The Apocalypse, Left To Remain). Now if, like me, the very thought of CMJ causes you to break out in painful hives [...]

HydraHead band Pelican are playing their only Ohio show on October 29 @ Ravari Room here in Columbus. Joining them for this event will be Brainbow , Kayo Dot , and Steve Brodsky of Cave In. This is going to be a awesome, heavy, show that I wish I was in town for. We've got a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky ducky donewaiting.com reader. To enter, send a blank e-mail to contest@donewaiting.com with the subject line "PELICAN". If your name isn't in your [...]
Now that you've all come down from the Death Magnetic food coma, perhaps you'd be interested in reading about something other than the latest output from four millionaires. Back away from the ledge, you pimply faced virgins, because it's time for your noise news. Robbing The Pimp To Give To The Saints Positively poaching southern noisegazers [...]
Are you hip to Zozobra yet? Well goddammit-be the fuck down; they're AWEZSOME with an unnecessary Z in the middle...last year's Harmonic Tremors was really excellent, and this year's recent release Bird of Prey is quite good, although it did take me a few listens to get really into it (and I do still need [...]

Now before getting into this record, firstly, I've got to impress upon you where this band are coming from. Their first record Choirs of the Eye was released in 2003 on John Zorns Tzadik label. Now therein lies the clue. Mr Zorn is famous for all things avante. Kayo Dot are just such a band. The brainchild of Toby Driver; formally of the band Maudlin of The Well, Kayo Dot are a very curious and intriguing musical object. Spanning genres with complex precision, Blue Lambency Down takes elements of heavy metal and psychedelic rock, [...]

The first time I heard Kayo Dot, I was kind of turned off. I had the impression they were in the post-rock genre, but their music was too chaotic, and I was just getting into the genre of "post-rock" at the time—I wanted more mainstream stuff…stuff that sounded normal. I'm not sure what drew me to have a listen to their new album, but I'm so glad I did. Kayo Dot is a two-piece multiple-instrument band from New York who released their latest album, Blue Lambency Downward last month. [...]
Lately I've been neglectful of my metal roots. I grew up on Black Sabbath , Led Zeppelin , and Metallica . Unfortunately over time I ended up listening to generic nu-metal bands and disposable alt-rock bands. Eventually I found my way through friend recommendations and tons of insane live shows. I haven't gone to a metal/hardcore show in ages, however I will still put on some " Seasons of the Abyss " when the time feels right. I've always told my friends that no matter what kind [...]

Earlier this week we posted a couple MP3s from Gregor Samsa , the multi-city minimalist collective that shares members with Kayo Dot. Now we turn our gaze toward KD. Led by Toby Driver and Mia Matsumiya, the NYC sextet just released their third album Blue Lambency Downward on Isis man Aaron Turner's Hydra Head records. The opening, title track is a mysterious 10-minute meandering of bells like crickets, bursts of patient guitar, jazzy drum fills (kept to a toppling spaciousness), electronic pulses, and chiming vocal melodies. It kinda feels like a psychedelic boat trip piloted by Ghost, [...]

Well, it's finally done. Another year in the books. It's been a good one and I am extremely thankful for all the great music that came out this year. I am also extremely thankful for all the people that have commented and sent e-mails over the entire year showing their appreciation for BOAWS. It really means a lot. Anyway, enough of my babbling. Here it is, my 20 favorite albums from this year. I'll probably not be updating until after Christmas, so I hope everyone has a great holiday and a safe one [...]

We've been anxiously awaiting the return of Boston's Kayo Dot since we missed their last stop in town earlier this year. Luckily for us, the genius that is Ovrcast (who by the way are absolutely killing it these last few months) recently wrangled them in for a latenight set and we couldn't have been more pleased. KD's richly orchestrated dark metal was an instant hit with us when their 2003 album Choirs of the Eye was released. The ominous undertones that swell throughout the record are layered with all the perfect amount of dissonant [...]
