Henry Rollins might not look like your average Jack-of-all-trades, but his resume sure fits the bill. Between his stint as Black Flag's vocalist in the 80s, to IFC documentary maker, and even as an occasional blogger for Vanity Fair Rollins does it all. But after LA's Indie 103 went down, we were wondering when we would see Rollins run back to radio. Thankfully, the outspoken "Liar" hasn't disappointed, and is coming back to FM airwaves, starting in March. Starting March 7, Rollins will have [...]

We might have to wait a while for the next release from the Walkmen, but who can blame them? You & Me was the NYC act's most commercially successful album, and deservedly so. The band announced last... Continue reading "The Download: Live Walkmen Set" >

The Walkmen , who have not come through Arizona in support of You & Me (sigh), stopped in for a session on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic last month. As you'd expect, it's heavy on You & Me material. In fact, they played only one old song, and that was off A Hundred Miles Off . (Wonder how sick they are of The Rat .) I cut up the songs into mp3s, but you can hear/watch the full session at KCRW . I think you can [...]
A funny thing happened to writer/theater director/songwriter Oren Lavie on his way to obscurity: KCRW-FM's Chris Douridas exposed audiences to his music, and then Lavie got a song in a Chevrolet commercial (even though he'd never owned a car is his life and doesn't watch TV). The tune, "Her Morning Elegance" (off his forthcoming album "The Opposite Side of the Sea"), gets a striking treatment in a video made from 3,225 still photographs. The L.A.-based Lavie co-directed, with Yuval and Merav Nathan. [More background here .] ||| Live: Lavie performs Wednesday [...]
I don't usually write a blog post around a video, but this one for Oren Lavie's "Her Morning Elegance" is just too cute. The girl's gorgeous red hair reminds me of my sister's. Oren Lavie conceived of the idea for this video and was one of the directors. Oren Lavie: Her Morning Elegance from The Opposite Side of the Sea (2007) A playwright who is also a songwriter, Lavie was featured in December on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic , in fact he was the first [...]
Fresh off the folding of Indie 103 less than two weeks ago, another southern California indie music staple, KCRW is gearing up for its winter pledge drive, hoping its listeners will prove that independent music can be a viable (and profitable) radio format. KCRW will be appealling to listeners starting Friday through February 9, and station administrators say they'll be putting the demise of Indie 103 at the forefront of the discussion. "The demise of Indie 103 is the handwriting on the wall for radio stations trying [...]

[I'm extending my hand; you're unclenching your fist; maybe now we can raise a glass to the real new year:] The Walkmen [pictured], whose tour de force "You & Me" was one of the best albums of 2008, have had a whirlwind two days — they kicked off a West Coast tour with a visit to KCRW-FM on Monday morning before traveling to San Diego for a date Monday night. Tonight, the bring their shimmering sound to the Music Box @ Fonda. ... It'll be L.A.'s last chance to [...]

Here's the news, straight from the horse's mouth: Starting December 1, KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad returns to weeknights, hosting a music show from 8 to 10pm PST, the slot previously occupied by new Music Director and Host of Morning Becomes Eclectic Jason Bentley. Garth has been on the air at KCRW since 1996 and hosted a weeknight show, formerly known as "Chocolate City." His exploration into urban rhythms and soul created a new home for a demographic that wasn't served anywhere else and he was the first DJ in the country to play both [...]
