Today we flash back on another of our favourite labels: SUB POP RECORDS . They're responsible for the careers of a diverse range of bands, from Nirvana to Dum Dum Girls to our very own Husky . And they're celebrating 25 years in the business on July 13. That means that they've been around since 1988. Before that founder Bruce Pavitt started a fanzine called Subterranean Pop about American independent artists and their labels. He started releasing compilations [...]

It's that time of the year again! The Bold Italic and Dusty Stax are hosting their annual spring dance on Saturday, March 23rd, and for this year's theme they've grabbed inspiration from the classic Hollywood days of glamour and scandal chronicled in the 1965 book Hollywood Babylon , which was initially banned upon its release. Hollywood Babylon Spring Formal will be held at Potrero Hill's Verdi Club and is sure to be an affair fit for the most famous district in Los Angeles: Ladies, there can only be one Black Dahlia and only [...]
Kelley Stoltz - I Remember, You Were Wild mp3 Kelley Stoltz - I Don't Get That mp3 Among our favorite eMusic purchases for 2011 were seven songs from San Franciscan Kelley Stoltz's most excellent 2010 LP, To Dreamers . (We tend to buy 'em one song at time, as previously, if inconsequentially, noted.) So once again, our little electronic gadget yesterday spun up a couple of his songs at

So, SF psychrockers Burnt Ones have a new track on the second playable flexi book from Castle Face Records . Burnt Ones are in some pretty awesome company on this one. Castle Face Records Group Flex II: Son of Flex also features Sic Alps , The Mallard , White Fence , Blasted Canyons , Ty Segall , Mikal Cronin , Warm Soda , Thee Oh Sees , Kelley Stoltz , the Fresh & Onlys and Running . [...]

11. Kelley Stoltz - Caroline ( Les Disques Steak ) How many songs have been written about Caroline? Who knows? Kelley Stoltz adds one more to the list, but instead of being about Caroline it's about all the songs that have been written about Caroline. It's kind of like looking into a mirror reflecting a mirror with a great pop song for the soundtrack. Put it on repeat for optimum effect. [...]

As we previously reported , Castle Face Records is releasing a tribute album to The Velvet Underground & Nico in conjunction with the 45th anniversary reissue of that classic VU record. The bad news is that the label's already sold out of copies - just another reason to see any of these bands at shows, I think - but tracks from the covers record have been steadily leaking around the web in recent weeks . Here's [...]

Bay area pop guru Kelley Stoltz— who's both charmed us as the drummer for Sonny & The Sunsets and with his own varied and formidable solo output —has covered the uncoverable: The Velvet Underground's two-minute and fifty-six seconds of pop perfection, "Sunday Morning." Stoltz though more than pulls of the feat by sticking close to the script, only adding a touch of extra meat to this beloved classic with the subtlest of strokes. "Sunday Morning" is part of a Velvet Underground & Nico covers album orchestrated by Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer and put out on his [...]

On Sunday, September 30th, you should strongly consider heading to the day-long Under the Central Freeway festival at Public Works. Hosted and produced by Penny Arcade's Raul Sanchez, it's an affair packed with locals familiar around these parts, including Kelley Stoltz , Religious Girls , Sweet Chariot , Will Sprott , The Wrong Words , Shalants , and Super Natural , as well as a gaggle of DJs in Public Works' loft. I WANT TO BELIEVE by Religious Girls [...]

Ty Segall , Thee Oh Sees , and The Fresh & Onlys are among those that recorded cover tracks for an upcoming The Velvet Underground & Nico 45th anniversary tribute. If anyone could do justice to Lou Reed and company's iconic 1967 debut, it would be these guys. White Fence , The Mallard , Burnt Ones , and Warm Soda also contribute [...]

Lauded director Woody Allen and his film crew descended upon San Francisco recently to begin work on an upcoming movie, giving rise to the sport of Woodyspotting . Here's how it works: San Francisco residents take to Twitter to report on Woody's latest filming location. Simple, right? As a tribute to the acclaimed filmmaker, we've compiled a collection of songs inspired by his often oddball, but nonetheless illustrious, film career. (Note: you’ll have to be logged in to Spotify to enjoy it) 1. Bhi Bhiman , [...]

This Wednesday, stop on by for a drink and an order of shishito peppers at Blowfish Sushi , and Noise Pop guarantees the background music will be solid. A continuation of the Blow Pop Happy Hour Series, installment features DJ sets from veteran locals Thee Oh Sees and Kelley Stoltz . Drink specials are provided by Trumer Pils from 6-9pm, and for every RSVP a free shot of sake is provided. class="wpaudio">Kelley Stoltz - "Pinecone" [...]

In A Cloud was a excellent compilation of San Francisco bands released by Secret Seven Records. Now they have announced In A Cloud II , a new vinyl-only compilation with 13 previously unreleased recordings by some of San Francisco's finest, which include many MM faves. Are you ready for the summer? Are you ready for the good times? Are you ready for the birds and bees? The apple trees? And a whole lot of indie rock? Well you're in luck because that's what we have here with the first mix of Summer Fridays 2012.* I am hoping to do these every Friday, though I'm gainfully employed now (we don't get summer Fridays at my job, unfortunately) and have a lot less time - and energy - than I have the last four years. Which is good! Anyway, we'll see how I do. This kickoff mix [...]

Last weekend was my grandmother's Celebration of Life. It would have been her 92nd birthday. We all had margaritas (it was also Cinco de Mayo; I had three) and told funny stories about her life. It was a blast, a good closure and celebration to a woman who meant a lot to a lot of people. Upon returning on Monday, I took a trip out to Anacortes and The Business, picking up the new Cloud Nothings LP, Attack On Memory , which served as inspiration for tonight's show. [...]

So many new releases, so little time. Here are a few guaranteed to brighten up a Friday. Loving this new track, Yatton from Beak> in all its hypnotic, krautrock inspired glory. From a new album due in the summer. a In a similar vein, Arc In Round's self-titled debut LP, being released June 26, by La Société Expéditionnaire , reflects a sensibility garnered from endless hours of studio tracking and hypnotic experimentation - think Stereolab meets Broadcast with the [...]

The floors of Kelley Stoltz ' San Francisco digs must be littered with great songs. When he cleans, he probably throws a bunch out into the dumpster because they're crowding him out. Of course he doesn't throw all of them out with the dishwater, he sometimes put's them on wax. As a stop-gap between albums (and recording the next Mantles album) Stoltz has just released a 7-inch single on Les Disques Steak over in France. He's calling it Two Imaginary Girls: Caroline is the A-side and Marcy is the B-side. "Caroline, [...]

The follow up to Kelley Stoltz 's 2010 LP, To Dreamers , is out now on the French label Les Disques Steak . The Two Imaginary Girls 7” single was recorded at Electric Duck Studios here in SF by Stoltz, but the tracks were mixed and mastered by Mikey Young of Eddie Current Suppression Ring and Total Control fame. You can stream both sides below for free, but with an awesome cover by Sonny Smith of Sonny and the Sunsets and limited to only 300 copies, it’s [...]

In 2010 we fell in love with To Dreamers , the last effort released by Kelley Stoltz , so we've been patiently been waiting for him to put out some new tracks in town. Luckily, I stumbled across a brand new 73 that he put out titled Two Imaginary Girls , which was released by Les Disques Steak . This new tune is a nice little 3 minute rock n' roll tune that demonstrates Stoltz's classic style of songwriting, especially [...]
