I think I'm partial to bands and artists from California. I think I'm also partial to anyone signed to Sub Pop. Kelley Stoltz is another one of those home recorders who plays a whole bunch of different instruments. There are plenty of those these days, but, he's actually really good. The first record he finished, Antique Glow, was completed in 2001, but Stoltz was lacking a label, so he went out and pressed a couple hundred vinyl records of the album, and did the artwork himself, [...]
In honour of May 24 and cottages and the like, here is this. Water, beaches, sailing, whatever. THOSE things. Those things the loser boating community can't experience because of this shit weather, which makes me pretty happy, though I'm sure the boaters don't care about that or anything else really (which is a boater characteristic, they all have it, even kayakers). You know, I want a boat! If anyone has any information on how I could get myself one and live on it forever without getting attacked by pirates or sea police or water [...]

Kelley Stoltz must be frustrated. I'm sure, being a folksy singer/songwriter living in the Bay Area has its advantages. He plays the guitar quite well and writes really pretty pop songs which must help him snag McSweeney's type girls all throughout the Bay Area bar scene. But outside of that, it's got to be at least a little irritating to constantly have to hear the word "underrated" slapped onto the end of your name. That's what seems to happen to singer/songwriters without interesting back-stories. Check out recent blog favorites. Elvis Perkins' songs are fantastic, but they [...]

Well, here we go. I've never been so unsure about a year end list in the three years I've been doing this blog. Nothing blew me away this year to make my decision for the number one album easy. My top five albums could all be number one, so as you read this list, think of it more as the higher on the list the albums are, the better. Not necessarily that album 15 on the list was 15th best in my mind. 50. Proud Simon - Shoestring Universe [...]

I was invited to submit my favourite ten albums of 2006 for a music blog survey and since I heard heaps of recently released records while working in retail, I couldn't resist. Plenty has been written and blogged about most all of the artists I've selected so their inclusion in this list says enough about how I feel about their music for now. The Devastations are the only band I know personally but I have seen many of them perform live, like the Yeah Yeah Yeah's (see above). For your added convenience I've also put all the tracks together in [...]
While my Top Ten remained pretty solid, I finagled with the rest of the list right up to this posting. Lots and lots of good music this year, some of it was even great. Brits dominated the list this year...
I have actually managed to buy and listen to a lot of new music this year, although there seems to be a surfeit of it around at present. As usual, every magazine end-of-year list has been deeply unimaginative and chart-based, so here's mine, albeit similarly unimaginative and chart-based (but at least subjectively quirky and personal, hmm - there's something oddly homo-erotic in list-making
7 Songs I have been thoroughly enjoying recently: MP3: Middle Distance Runner - Sea Wolf MP3: Waxing / Waning - Great Northern MP3: Tonight Will Be Fine - Teddy Thompson MP3: Tickets to Crickets - Ferraby Lionheart MP3: Words - Kelly Stoltz MP3: Clouds - The Long Winters MP3: [...]
I really need to get moving if I'm going to feature a song from every artist appearing at Lollapalooza . This is the fourth installment and features a bunch of great stuff including an awesome blusey version of "New York (2x)" from Ryan Adams and a song from the Towers Of London that borrows a few Vanilla Ice lyrics. I also found out today that I don't have to work on the 5th and (thus) won't miss anything on day 2 of Lollapalooza. Nice. Oh yeah, I also contributed a song [...]

We' ve been huge fans of San Francisco singer/songwriter/multi-instru mentalist Kelley Stoltz for some years now; he's done two live sessions on WFMU that were nothing less than joyous occassions, but his records have been quite overlooked by the indie/alt-whatzit culture too for some reason we can't figure out. Oddly enough he's been bigger in Australia than his own homeland, but that's thankfully changing with some higher profile on the Sub Pop label where he's released an EP The Sun Comes Through , and a brand new full length album entitled Below the Branches [...]

The new issue of Q is out and it's "The '80s Issue" with a picture of True Blue era Madge on the cover. Also on the cover -- stuck to it with that rubber booger stuff -- is a CD featuring 15 '80s songs covered by today's artists, exclusively for Q. This is why I bought it because this once great magazine is now fairly lame. So is this '80s covers CD. I haven't heard of half the new bands on it -- Orson ? Neal Casal ? Clayhill [...]
so i bought the august issue of q magazine yesterday because there is an article in there on u2 and the making of the joshua tree. it's not really very revealing. at all. did you know bono used to dress like a cowboy? (like, a whole outfit, not just the hat). big news people. big news. in scoopier news, the magazine also comes with an "80s covered" cd of 15 exclusive recordings from a random bunch of artists that some people think are cool. here's a few i liked: [mp3] [...]
We would like to introduce you to Kelley Stoltz . When we kicked back, threw on the headphones, and listened to this artist we thought "Essential "could end a movie" kind of rock that just purrrrrs." What did you think? Use a tag or comment to share your thoughts with everyone. Enjoy. Genre: Rock-Pop-Folk Label: Subpop Source: Pocket|Trax [...]
