Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me Directed by Drew DeNicola (USA, 2012, 100 minutes) Festival Screenings: Tuesday, May 21, 9PM at SIFF Cinema Uptown Wednesday, May 26, 8:30pm at SIFF Cinema Uptown Last year’s Oscar winning documentary Searching for Sugarman shined a spotlight on an artist who, despite obvious talent and critical acclaim, somehow slipped through the cracks and never enjoyed the mainstream success he was destined for until later in life when a journalist tracked him down and revealed his bootlegged music was [...]

In March 2010, Big Star' s Jody Stephens honored late band mate Alex Chilton with an impromptu all-star performance of the band's 1978 classic, Third (later Sister Lovers ), during South by Southwest. Later that year, Stephens unearthed the album's original scores and began staging a handful of shows across the country, featuring a shifting lineup of performers and singers, along with a full orchestra. Now, the project has announced two new performances for Chicago (June 28th) and New York City (June 30th). Stephens will be on skins for both outings and [...]

photo by Alex Crick Today, April 27th, marks the 20th anniversary of The Posies ' landmark album Frosting on the Beater , and to celebrate, Audioasis host Sharlese Metcalf, along with KEXP staffers Chris Beiter and Janice Headley, reached out to founding members Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow to ask "twenty questions." 20 Questions by The Posies on Grooveshark 1) One of the songs on Frosting on the Beater is called “20 Questions.” How do you feel [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Robyn Hitchcock Facebook Part of the joy of a Robyn Hitchcock performance is listening to him go off on tangents in his song introductions. He also does the same while not on stage and my phone interview with him on Monday was no different. We chatted a bit about the British singer/songwriter's fine new Love From London album and some of [...]

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Whores. w/ Hot Graves, Order of the Owl Saturday, March 2 529 - 529 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 Admission $7 At this point I don't know how many more superlatives I can hurl at Whores. or at their bludgeoning brand of brutal pigfuck noise-rock. If you're a regular reader of this site, you've heard it all before, but for all of you newbies, I'll lay it out once again. Basically it goes something like this: if you're like [...]

Ken Stringfellow , known for his work with The Posies, R.E.M. and the re-formed Big Star, will be playing at Gallery 5 with Canary Oh Canary and The Dimmer Twins tonight (Feb. 25) in support of his latest record "Danzig in the Moonlight," which sees him stacking the deck stylistically and pretty masterfully. He recently released a one-take video for the song "Superwise" as well, which you can watch below.
Ken Stringfellow has nothing to prove. He’s made plenty of successful records- he is on three Big Star albums, six REM albums and twelve of The Posies’ albums. He has worked with dozens of other artists and somehow also made time for a solo career. His most recent release is a solo album, his fourth, ... Continue reading

Frank Yang It seems ages ago, but early 2002 was still an era where the magazine was still a vital medium for music reviews and general discovery; I still clearly recall a live writeup in issue 49 of The Big Takeover wherein editor Jack Rabid gave Ken Stringfellow a glowing review for a show at New York's Mercury Lounge on September 20, 2001, and how it served as a powerful musical anodyne for those in need of some healing just a week after the World Trade Center attacks. It was [...]

It's not a new trick, this beauty and the grizzled old bear routine because one only has to go back to the successful Isobel Campbel and Mark Lanagen collaboration (and Kylie and Nick Cave, Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews before them) to witness riotous chemistry from opposing forces. Well it's happening all over again with the much travelled (Posies and R.E.M.) and decidely weather beaten Ken Stringfellow and the straight from the ocean bed mermaid that is Charity Rose Thielen (from The Head and the Heart ). The contrast between the vocalists is a revelation and this slo-mo of [...]

Schubas was another first for me, being new to Chicago and all. It’s not your cheap-beer-on-the-floor kind of venue (though there’s plenty of call for those in the diverse world of music); it’s very much an out-of-the-way nook suited for appreciating a good drink and a good band. The front room was warm, cozy, and decked out in lights, while the back room was dark except for the stage lights and the flickering candles on the tables against the walls. The venue had chairs. I am throwing this out quickly as I find it divides people: some [...]

Justin Jay The Strokes has got themselves a nice little racket going. Most bands who've been at it for over a decade would be critically if not commercially pilloried for not changing up their style, but The Strokes get drubbed when they do. Luckily for them, they're very good at doing what they do and they're smart enough to know their business model as a band relies on actually doing just that while releasing a new album (or solo record that doesn't fall too far from the tree) and some fitful, big paycheque touring. [...]

Hunka hunka burnin' love: Ken Stringfellow & Margaret Cho Posies singer Ken Stringfellow released his fourth solo LP, Danzig in the Moonlight , last fall which found him a little more raw mode than the harmonied pop his band is known for. You can stream it via Spotify below. Just in time for Valentine's Day, Ken has released a video for "Doesn't it Remind You of Something?" which we're premiering in this post. While the album version [...]

Cecil Mathieu There are musicians out there with a more impressive alt.rock resume than Ken Stringfellow . Starting out as co-frontman of the criminally under-appreciated Bellingham power-pop outfit The Posies , he was part of the final incarnation of the legendary Big Star , he was an unofficial member of R.E.M. both on stage and in the studio for a number of years in the post-Berry era, is part of the massive rotating cast of The Minus 5 , he fronts a Norwegian garage rock band called The Disciplines , and [...]
