1995 LP released on Kubitsuri Tapes by now-retired "noise-folk" performer Kengo Iuchi. The venerable Mutant Sounds blog describes this album as "Japanese acid death folk…the freaked out weirdness goes on and on. The guitar which Mr. Iuchi plays and the song which Mr. Iuchi sings become a grudge and sound through our heart. And it turns into fear. It is our heart." Others have described the atmosphere created by Iuchi as "a hazy midnight nightmare…horrific ghost-riddled and miserable death folk croaking and thrashings." I've posted albums classified by fans and collectors as "loner" folk or "downer" folk, but [...]
Ian suggested I rank the "top ten Japanese albums" for my next installment of the Friday Top Ten franchise. That's right, it's a franchise now. As far as I know you don't have to do more than two or three of something in order to make it a franchise. They call the Twilight movies a franchise and there are only three of them. Lauren and Nick extended a very nice invitation to eat some of their fancy vegan food last night, and since I'm not one to turn down free anything, Nicci and I happily accepted a fine array of pasta, kale, beets, salad, asparagus, mushrooms and fancy olive-packed bread into our bellies. Also, I had a couple Knob Creek drinks, including one which was magically transformed into a mint julep! Before leaving, I grabbed a plastic cup and poured some more Knob into it [...]

No Doctors "Rumble Ring" (MP3) "AAO" (MP3) These gents kicked off proceedings years ago as wide-eyed Minnesota noise scene teens, and while staking their turf firmly and quickly, admittedly didn't do much at first to move my head around. Yet, as time went on and shifts were made to Chicago and eventually San Francisco, members picked up here and there and unexpected influences started to stick to the ribs of their No Wave skeletons. Lo and behold, there was then an embrace of actual rock tradition, quite an about-face for any band starting its journey [...]
