Just time for a quick look at the Sony nominations - congratulations to Lauren Laverne, Jarvis Cocker and Cerys Matthews for their recognition. Seeing those names together makes the awards list look like the cover of Select magazine. Also nice to see Danny Baker getting better treatment here than he got at Radio London. Marie Nixon (DuSantiago) has moved into politics. Sort-of. She's become the new CEO of Sunderland uni student union. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

No, not Skrillex. Never Skrillex. We're into the last week of this drivel. Praise the Lord. That does mean that I'm not allowed to put of stuff that'll require a bit of effort from me now though, since I'm running out of later to save things for. Hence, this week might have a lot more words than you expect from me, or might end up just being rubbish. Not that the two things are mutually exclusive, of course. Kenickie were three girls and a boy. While they weren't always the [...]

I have nothing to say for myself. Does anyone else remember Kenickie? Blur "Substitute" (Who Cover) Buffalo Tom "Heaven" (The Psychedelic Furs Cover) Dirty Projectors "I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine" (Bob Dylan Cover) Kenickie "Save Your Kisses For Me" (Brotherhood of Man Cover) Sonic Youth "I Know There's An Answer" (Beach Boys [...]

'True Romance' By Pris. 'Breaking Hearts And Giving Up ' By Pris. Are you fed up with earnest young men sporting de rigueur beards , singing about the burden of being rich and misunderstood? Maybe you’re sick to the back teeth of the seemingly infinite procession of quirky Brit schooled, incense burning, floaty robed, ‘mystical’ ladies who sing about the square root of fuck all? Or quite possibly you have had your fill of homoerotic, metro-sexual boy bands and vapid overproduced, auto [...]

"I just want to hear something I haven't heard before" said John Peel. With that in mind you could argue that by digging through the archives I've missed the point of #keepingitpeel. However since the rest of the year is dedicated to writing about new music, going out to see live bands and attempting to deliver something you might not have heard before I think I can be forgiven for using today for nostalgia, don't you? We are slipping out of Scotland for this one, going south of the border to Sunderland. [...]

A little over a month ago I posted the Boom! Boom boom, cha! (“Be My Baby” Drum Intro) Mix and I've been overjoyed with the great response it's been getting. As I said before, the Phil Spector -penned / Ronettes -performed "Be My Baby" intro is possibly the most iconic drum beat in pop music and has been used in a number of variations by artists time and time again. Using both your additions from the last post and some of my own research, I've compiled 18 more songs with the “boom, boom boom, [...]

Before being a television/radio personality, Lauren Laverne fronted the poptastic band, Kenickie, a four-piece punk band from Sunderland. The bandcemerged during the Britpop years of the mid-90's, taking their name from their favourite character in the film Grease, their catchy pop-punk tunes with attitude were catchy as fuck, sadly thought they got lost in the quagmire of bands that emerged during the Britpop era. I'm a sucker for anyone who can make me laugh. This definitely extends to bands as well. Today here are two bands beginning with 'K' who have suckered me good and proper! Here are Kenickie being deadpan: And KateGoes ...er...not: I've probably mentioned before that I'm a fan of Kenickie. One of my favourite Kenickie recordings is the hidden track on their debut album At The Club . Known as 'Montrose Gimps It Up For Charity' , [...]
OK, part two of my attempt to fill in the blanks of Rhino's worthy but incomplete Brit Box chronicling the UK indie scene from 1985 - 2000. (Part One, or Disc Five, is here.) Mind you, these are filtered through...

For the record, Jack is Jack Penate, Jamie is Jamie T, and let’s say the over-enthusiastic blogger is me. Just for example. This story starts a month or so ago with an interesting piece in February’s Observer Music Monthly by ubiquitous commentator Paul Morley, in which he went on about the disappointment that can so often occur when a much-hyped band turns out to be a lot less good than first appeared. Here’s a sample: “A new album or group is talked about in a certain tantalising way, but it turns out [...]

I got around to reading the first issue of Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s Phonogram today. It was a well-crafted comic, but not my cup of tea, unfortunately. The high concept of Hellblazer meets High Fidelity loses me on the High Fidelity part. I can’t help it; I fucking despise music snobs and their pretentious airs. It’s a deeply ingrained reflex -- whenever I hear terms like “rich tonal modality†used in a conversation about pop music, a blood red rage overtakes me and will not abate until [...]
