Tweet Eagle Rock, California's Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan have a fifties chemistry that is often attempted but so rarely accomplished, making them sound simple but at the same time complete. "Girls, Gather 'Round" is a true let's-all-sing-together song with its "one last night before the road steals me away" sentiment. It is nearly impossible to make it through the chorus without wanting to join in and take part in the swing-your-mug rhythm with the oh-so-familiar feeling that embodies the entire [...]
. . .What a great week it's been for music in Indy. Bright Eyes on Thursday, the Head and the heart on Friday (both in-store at Luna and then an impromptu show at The Earth House after the decemberists cancelled) and then My Morning Jacked at white river on sunday. Unfortunately, my card reader has [...]

Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan, the double-barreled purveyors of Americana who announced their intentions as the Milk Carton Kids by releasing a live album this spring , today unveil their first proper studio recording. It's titled "Prologue," an exceedingly tender and unassumingly spellbinding collection of tunes the L.A. duo — wielding just two acoustic guitars and two voices — recorded with Eric Robinson. None other than Joe Henry wrote a foreword for the album, pointing out how Pattengale and Ryan have succeeded in creating a unified "voice" for their music. Writes Henry: "They move to become a [...]

If not because of their music — a winning combination of back-porch Americana and classic pop — then Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan have become one of Los Angeles' most dynamic duos on pure charisma. The twosome has become a Hotel Cafe favorite with its poignant blend of musical storytelling built from the simplest of elements: two voices and two acoustic guitars. This week, Pattengale and Ryan take the next step — they're adopting a band name, the Milk Carton Kids , and releasing a live album "Retrospect." They're selling physical copies of the album at the show, but [...]

It's hard to listen to the music of Cary Brothers without visualizing the television and film protagonists his songs have serenaded — starting, famously, with "Blue Eyes" from his college buddy Zach Braff's 2004 movie "Garden State." Chilling moments of self-realization, hyper-romantic love scenes, startling plot points: Brothers' tunes, for better or for worse (but certainly better for his pocketbook), have oozed from scads of them. ||| Photos by Jeff Koga Which can be a curse when presented with just the tunesmith himself, [...]
The closing track, a sleepy cover of '80s German outfit Alphaville's "Forever Young," is so far removed from the original synth-pop production, your New Wave friend with the keytar would hardly recognize it.
Where a twentysomething white kid from almost-suburban small town Eagle Rock got the soul of an old Delta blues player is anyone's guess. Kenneth Pattengale displayed his love of traditional American music combining elements of blues, Tom Waits, and good ol' fashioned country & western at Hotel Café Nov. 25.

FMLY is ecstatic and honored to present our hometown neighborhood with our very own stage stage at the 25th anniversary of the Abbot Kinney Festival. We grew up attending this festival every year, Cameron's parents once lived on Abbot Kinney and back in the day the street served as our skateboard highway for getting to the Windward Circle. We thank everyone who has made this possible, so come out and party! If this is your first Abbot Kinney fest, it is FREE so come out and show support for the community while indulging in everything we have to [...]

Kenneth Pattengale works outside, or at least on the fringes, of what the music industry might traditionally call its own. Over the last eight years, Pattengale has taken inspiration from the career paths of artists like Randy Newman , Elvis Costello and personal hero Joe Henry by exploring what it means to wear the differing hats of film composer, record producer and performing songwriter. The music called into question is hard to classify. It runs the gamut from swamp music to rhythm & blues, lullaby to country & western, folk song to piano ballad and [...]
