Benjamin Biolay and co-author Keren Ann Zeidel made a name for themselves when French music vet Henri Salvador covered their bossa-chanson Jardin d'Hiver in 2002. Both Ben and Keren recorded the song themselves too, and Keren duetted with Henri for a radioshow. But I had no idea the song was some kind of standard nowadays. Recently, Canadian actress Ima (pictured) added a version to the impressive list of artists who covered the song, that features jazzpiano-bigshot Jacky Terrasson , his jazzy collegues Vincent Malone and the Getz-y Jim Tomlinson [...]
I got myself started on Keren Ann with her third album, Not Going Anywhere . It remains my favorite, with beautiful and haunting melodies sung by her rich voice, complimented with well-produced instrumentation. Much of her music includes acoustic guitar finger-picking, and the occasional vocal harmonies are gorgeous. Everybody's in love with Feist right now, and that's understandable. Feist is easily lovable, from her role in Broken Social Scene to those lovely solo albums (I'm looking right at you "The Reminder"!!), there's very little not to love. As another female solo artist that's pretty well-loved and respected, Cat Power aka Chan Marshall has got her own thing going, albeit her music generally quieter and more depressing in nature. Most of the girls posted here do sing in French, but for some I make an exception. Keren Ann Zeidel's one of them. Her just-released fifth album is, just like her third cd, completely in English. Some songs, like the already posted Lay Your Head Down , have a distinct Velvet Underground vibe, there are even songs with very loud guitars.
