First live show of the year I shall attend is for these find fellas. Halifax shoegazers Kestrels coming to town for the first time Saturday night @ Le Cagibi. They've got a fine debut album in 2009's "Primary Colours" and early last year with a 73 titled "The Solipsist" and last month with a free single titled [...]

by nashawa Kestrels are a hybrid of straight-up pop and unsophisticated soundscape-ery. They're sloppy as all hell, but the best part of them is how little that matters. Kestrels is clearly making music they enjoy and they're having a good time doing it. This comes across vividly on "There All the Time Without You." More music should translate this way. It almost hurts when you hear a band that is trying too hard to impress you; Kestrels will get the job done without lifting a finger. [...]

"There All the Time Without You" is the latest single from Halifax noisemakers Kestrels , and it is a doozy, my friends. The band is preparing to unleash A Ghost Hostory , their sophomore LP, this winter. An entry on the band's official website mentions that Kestrels have been hanging out with Tim Wheeler, the frontman for 90s Britpop band Ash,and that he'll be turning up with a guitar solo on the new record. I'm wasn't surprised to read that one bit; both Ash and Kestrels have an uncanny way of making [...]
There is a lot of promise in these songs, but as a stand-alone release The Solopsist 's wandering sound is more often puzzling than it is compelling. Kestrels, out of Nova Scotia, offer a stop-gap between full-lengths with the four-track EP, The Solipsist, which confirms the youthful fire in the group's sound. After a quiet fade in, the boys unleash "The Light", a driving power-pop number with the brightness of surf rock and the lean edge of something put together in the basement. However, even for such a short release, it doesn't really let us know what's coming. [...]

Good Good Friday, friends. And joyous Earth Day, earthlings. And Happy Birthday to me. Yeah, seriously. It's my birthday. So what did you get me? I got you something. Okay, not all of you, but some of you are going to get something, and it's something good. Kestrels are back with a new EP, The Solipsist , coming just ahead of the follow-up to their QBiM-approved debut Primary Colours . The 4-song EP is a limited pressing of just 100 [...]

I'm a few months late on this rather obvious observation, but when Movember was in full swing I often got caught wondering how many "Movs" were actually for the cause and how many were simply dudes that rocked dusters all year round and now hate the thirty-one day tradition. I'm can't help but feel the same way when I crank up the new EP - The Solipsist - from Truro gear heads, Kestrels . In 2010, it seemed every musician raided their dad's closet for flannels [...]

I spent last week out on Long Island for work, which explains why my posts were limited. The hours were long, the exhaustion was overwhelming, and the local beers at the Brickhouse Brewery in Patchogue were excellent, so I didn't have any time or energy to post. Sorry for that. And the drive back was a nightmare. I left right during rush hour unfortunately (not by my choosing) and made it to Exit 46 on the fabled traffic disaster called the LIE (Long Island Expressway) before I basically stopped moving. Helpful signs on the road detailed that the commute would [...]

I honestly don't care if you don't like Kestrels or not. I do, and I'm going to keep on posting each and every song they send over. The Truro based power trio led by all-around nice guy and primary song writer Chad Peck wear their 902s influences on their sleeves. J Mascis , delightful nods to Blue album Weezer (seriously, one of the new 73 tracks will have you looking through the garage for a VHS tape with that Spike Jonze vid on it - or youtube for the youngsters reading this) [...]

Five Funky Stories:: Chad from Kestrels If you know our history here at the hill, you'll know that we enjoy the cut of Kestrels jib. We've talked about them a few times on the site, and they're a past recipient of the herohill/MNS artist of the month designation, so it was natural that we got them hooked up with our random question machine in advance of their HPX show. You can see Kestrels play as part of the [...]

Wow, what a horrendously bad week for me and music. First, the cassette player in my Infiniti inexplicably stopped working, and the cassette player was how I hooked up my iPod to my speakers. Since then, I've been using an old FM Transmitter that works well, as long as you like a hearty handful of static with your music, which I... don't. Anyone have any suggestions? I hadn't been planning to buy a new car due to the troubling financial state of affairs over the past year, but this may have pushed me past a tipping point. I have a [...]
(photo: Chelle) The last three weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind for me, as I've been knee-deep in professional development for my real job and so some things at home have sort of piled up. And by "some things" I mean "my desk". And by "piled up" I mean "Holy crap, where'd all this junk come from?" One thing that fell on my desk that is most definitely not junk is Kestrels ' Primary Colours , the band's debut album. It's released by Noyes [...]
(photo: Chelle) I've been eagerly awaiting the release of Primary Colours , the debut album from Truro/Halifax natives Kestrels , and won't have much longer to wait for it. Slated for a July 14 release date, this fantastic band is sure to please anyone who digs The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, Moscow Olympics and any of the other new-wave of drone-rock bands. I've decided to retire the "s" word descriptor (you know, the one that rhymes with "glue maze") when trying to describe their music because there's nothing [...]

Ah, summer. With all your sun and your heat and your humidity and your sweat. How I missed you so. I just ran 2.5 miles, the furthest I've been able to go since my knee surgery, and you know what, it hurt like hell, but out under the summer sky on a beautiful day, all is right with the world. Barbecues and blooming trees, sandy beaches and broken dreams. Summer comes only once a year. Let's enjoy it this time. Download Camera Obscura - "Honey in the Sun".mp3 [...]
