Here is part 2 of who I shall see at NXNE 2011. This being Thursday June 16, 2011. Things are starting to pick up that night. Again I am too overwhelmed on who to see! 7PM Snowblink at The Music Gallery Hopefully I will try to catch their set but I have to go to a interview at around 7:30pm. 8PM Ruth Minnikin at Dakota Tavern [...]

We last featured Ontario Canada's Ketch Harbour Wolves in February of '09 with 'So Long to the Ground', a track off of their 2008 EP, 'Dead Calm Horizon'. Their newer album Anachronisms follows the ambitious debut Dead Calm Horizon - which garnered the #1 Album of 2008 accolade on three independent Canadian blogs. Anachronisms was recorded at a remote cabin in eastern Ontario, and then mixed by Laurence Currie (Wintersleep, In-Flight Safety, Sloan) at Sunnyside Studios in Toronto. It was released to the world on June 2nd, 2010. Showcasing a mature yet energetic sound, Anachronisms steps deliriously through [...]

Attended the second last i(heart)music show at Zaphod Beeblebrox on December 10, 2010. Playing at the show were: Ketch Harbour Wolves The Murder Plans Lordy Lordy Lordy Lordy was the first band to play. They were good [...]

Anachronisms is the sophomore album from Canadian indie-rockers Ketch Harbour Wolves who made a bit of a splash back in 2008 with their debut release Dead Calm Horizon . I have not heard the debut before so this is my first intoduction to the band and they have created an album that evokes a real feeling and weight to it through kind of abstract vignettes about what seems to be an ancient or mystical land and dealing with a lot of topics of alienation and loss, very common themes certainly in today's music. This album initially [...]

This has the potential to be a regular Friday thing; a desk clearing edition of music I wish I had more time to talk about, but simply don't. No more 500 word think-pieces (I can hear you all saying, thank god), simply a quick descriptor and a free track. Work for you? Works for me. Ketch Harbour Wolves - One of my favorite discoveries in the last few years. The unique sound is an almost rural recklessness meets big city alienation and loneliness in [...]
Two of my fellow Bloggers in Arms, Matt at i(heart)music and Bryan at Herohill , had nothing but high praise for Ketch Harbour Wolves and their 2008 Dead Calm Horizon . Matt and Bry are two guys whose opinions I highly value, which is why I found it so odd that I never got around to listening to that disc, even though it's been in my Library for quite some time now. Perhaps I'll go back and listen to it soon, but for now I'm totally getting into the band's [...]

On December 19th, I decided to hit up Zaphod Beeblebrox to see Ketch Harbour Wolves play. They are a band from Toronto and their music was describe as: Imagine the rich baritone of The National carried by Arcade Fire arrangements through a Leonard Cohen wilderness . The band put on a really great set. Other bands that opened for them were Montreal's Murder Ford Monument and a new band from Ottawa called hotshotcasino . It was a pretty decent show, more people [...]

I'd like to dedicate this post to the commenter the other day who pointed out that Glasvegas' "Geraldine" was put out in '08 . It was... probably, but it ended up on my computer in 2009, so, whatever. And with that, I'll point out one of my other favourite songs of 2009 released in 2008, "Letters" by the Ketch Harbour Wolves. Seems like an appropriate tie-in with the contest for KHW tickets for this coming Friday, December 11th in Toronto . I've fluctuated on KHW's album Dead Calm Horizon . Not on whether [...]

Ketch Harbour Wolves are a really great band. They put out an outstanding ( and still free! ) record last year, Dead Calm Horizon , and they put on an excellent live show. They are playing this coming Friday, and will be joined by Hamilton's The Rest , who has been discussed on the Burgeoning Metropolis before , as well as Chinese Food (who I know nothing about). At any rate, it sounds like it should be a great show, and you can win a pair of guest list spots [...]

We're now firmly in December, and I'm in a giving mood. So here's yet another musical giveaway! Next Friday, 11 December, is a stacked bill at El Mocambo: Ketch Harbour Wolves, the Rest, and Chinese Food. Toronto / Cambridge, ON's Ketch Harbour Wolves stand out in my mind for working well as very much a rock band and in their stripped-down acoustic version. I've enjoyed them while sitting on the grass in a backyard and in a traditional rock club setting. If you've been around the Canadian music scene in [...]

That's right Halifax. Ketch Harbour Wolves - who you might remember from the praise we showered on them ( Best Canadian EP of 2008 ) - are in town recording their follow up and have a last minute show at The Seahorse tonight. They'll be playing with Modern Citizen and Owl , so I would urge all of you sad sacks to beat the heat with some anthem-esque rock from a great bunch of guys. Things start @ 9PM and tickets are only seven duckets, so make sure you get down and support [...]

Ketch Harbour Wolves Dead Calm Horizon [EP] Self-Released [2008] Fire Drill Review: If Interpol and The National had a kid it might turn out like Canada's Ketch Harbour Wolves. Their songs are filled with layered harmonies, brooding guitar and intricate swirling song structures that will reach out and grab you. The band has had some nice recent press such as Top 10 Hottest bands in Canada by HeroHill and [...]

Ketch Harbour Wolves are so confident you'll dig their new album that they're giving it away for the price of an e-mail addy on their website . It's definitely worth your time to go check it out there. Think The National and Interpol, but not quite as depressing, and with more vocal range. I know what you're thinking: There's too many bands doing this kind of slow indie rock with a deep voice and heavy lyrics. Well, you're right. But there's room for Ketch Harbour Wolves - they're very [...]

The Ketch Harbour Wolves hail from across Ontario, yet foster a deep connection to Ketch Harbour (Nova Scotia). It was there at the edge of the ocean that the band began to grow in the tiny coastal village - at which point KHW was merely a seedling nurtured by vocalist/guitarist Jonathan Tyrrell and percussionist Brian Urbanik. Ketch Harbour Wo lves were born five-strong on the familiar ground of Toronto with bass guitarist Scott Winter, lead guitarist Liam Brown, and multi-instrumentalist Kristjan Bergey (keyboards, flute, saxophone). They [...]

I think Ketch Harbour Wolves are one of the/the most underrated bands in Toronto, maybe in Canada.... hell, maybe in the entire world. I came across their album on Herohill's top Canadian EPs of 2008 , and it took me approximately 15 seconds to figure out that the guys at Herohill had really hit the nail on the head with KHW. They (KHWs) ended the year in a three way tie for BM 's album of the year with Kanye West and Chad Van Gaaelen , so, pretty select company for a pretty [...]

The Rest has released what I believe to be the top album of the year so far, it's okay if you haven't heard about of them yet. They played their record release show to a sold out show at The Tranzac Club. I got to meet Paul at Wolves, Hawks and Kites who I talked to for quite a bit and his musical project that he's engulfed with, Dog Is Blue. This was the first time I got to see the Tranzac from the inside, I always knew where it was due to [...]

Last night was just about the perfect ending to what was a pretty spectacular week off for me (Tues: Dodgeball, Wed: FoTC , Thurs: Jays game). Especially since, 1/the Tranzac turned out to be a pretty cool venue; 2/the show ran very on time; and 3/ I made it home to catch the last 3 mins of the Blazers v. Rockets in time to see the Blazers get within 3 only to have Steve Blake chuck up a brutal shot with 10 seconds still on the clock... I digress... The only downside with the [...]

Ja!
