Josh Rouse is trying to convince himself that his 2006 relocation to Spain didn’t completely alienate his American fan base. It hasn’t, really. But he can’t deny that life overseas has done a number on him. A failed first marriage prompted Rouse’s move from Nashville to Spain, where a relationship with artist Paz Suay has [...]

Every so often an album is released that seems to have been made exactly to my idiosyncratic specifications. Ornette Coleman's harmolodics? Check. Intellectually ambitious hip hop? Check. Sprawling narrative? Check. I'm compelled to believe that Soweto Kinch crafted his new The Legend of Mike Smith with me in mind. Can there really be anyone else in the universe who loves The Streets' A Grand Don't Come for Free , Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City , Ornette Coleman's [...]

Kevin Ayers in the Seventies in London by Kate Simon After hearing about Kevin Ayer's very recent passing, Kate Simon was kind enough to send me this beautiful shot of him from the 1970's. She said, "I photographed him innumerable times, and was at the historic June 1, 1974 show he did at The Rainbow with Cale, Nico, and Eno. He was a stunning musical and personal presence." One of the pioneers of 'The Canterbury Scene' passed away today. The English singer-songwriter was a member of many bands, most notably Soft Machine, in which he collaborated with Pink Floyd's Syd Barrrett and future guitarist of The Police, Andy Summer. The cause of Ayers' death is not yet known.

A sad start to today as news that Kevin Ayers passed away in his sleep last night. Beyond his seminal work with The Soft Machine throughout the '60s and gritty prog outfit Gong, Ayers was a visionary psych folk artist, crafting one of my personal favorite albums, his career-defining Joy of a Toy. Ayers was 68. Blast these songs loud today, folks. MP3 ::: Kevin Ayers - The Clarietta Rag Kevin Ayers - Stop This Train (Again Doing It)Â
