"We met this fellow playing bass for the lovely Jenny Lewis at V Festival, and he gave me one of the best albums I've ever heard, called Gentle Spirit, by him." - Nick Allbrook, Tame Impala guitarist The internet is such a heavily mapped out place that it's hard for a band to retain any level of mystique or privacy. Yet somehow Jonathan Wilson remains a mystery. His fingerprints can be seen everywhere from Jenny Lewis's Acid Tongue to Elvis Costello's Momofuku and former Jayhawks Gary Louris' Vagabonds [...]

My love for the music of Joanna Newsom has been well documented on this here blog, and her latest 3-disc extravaganza Have One On Me has been no exception. When I started listening to the record, there was a part of me that was a little bit perturbed at the fact that she has somewhat normalized her voice a little bit, feeling as if she was sort of giving in to all of the haters who didn't like the high pitched squeak that accompanied her last two albums. The words "acquired taste" [...]

Time for some recent stuff that caught our ears here at For The Sake Of The Song headquarters. All the tracks in this refreshing ten pack either came out recently or will be released in the very near future. O man, can´t wait for that new Tunng album. But don´t stop there, we´ve got a lot more excellent tunage here. Try the intimate sound of The Fools for instance, a very promising girl duo from New York City. Or take the crispy folk rock of Timothy Cushing from Maine, the lush [...]

I can't believe I nearly missed writing about what is going to be one of the best shows to come through town all year. Fruit Bats with Iran & Kevin Barker are playing Zanzabar (2100 S Preston St) on Friday, September 18 at 9pm for only $10/12 (available at TicketWeb and ear X-tacy). Zanzabar is new as a venue, and it looks to be a really cool, fun place and with music like this...it's certain to be a place [...]

In 2004, freak folk extraordinaries Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom went on tour together. Five years later, footage from the tour will be available to more than just those lucky fans that caught them in conert. The Family Jams, a documentary put together by Kevin Barker of Currituck Co. and Vetiver fame, follows the two musicians and his own band on and off stage. In addition to concert footage, the film provides a behind the scenes look at the bands traveling together, from show to show.
