Music blogs exploded this morning after Saturday night's Of Montreal show in New York City, which featured, among other things, a cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with a member of MGMT, vocalist Kevin Barnes dressed like a cardinal, covered in shaving cream, becoming a centaur AND parading out on a white horse, mostly naked. See accounts of this debauched insanity at You Ain't No Picasso , Fluxblog and Stereogum . After the jump, video of the Nirvana cover. All of this has certainly ramped up [...]

kevin barnes is complicated, and listening to any of montreal record is an excercise in keeping one's sanity close to the chest. i dont mean to imply that listening to of montreal will make you go crazy, but if you delve into his mildly irrational lyrics you may find yourself sinking deeper and deeper into some kind of momentary kevin barnes inducded depression. or, if you just dont pain attention to whatever he's rambling on about you'll just find yourself enjoying some of finest art pop records being made today. their newest, skeletal lamping [...]

Everyone can relax. Kevin Barnes has gotten over the break-up and is doing much better this time around. After the high drama and catharsis of last year's epically dark Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? , Barnes and the rest of Of Montreal have dusted themselves off and returned to the celebratory psych-pop days of old with the anything but Skeletal Lamping . Contrary to its qualifier, Lamping is huge, busting at the seams with ideas, style shifts, and sexed-up enthusiasm. Barnes would appear to have reached the epiphany that the best [...]

INITIAL THOUGHTS: Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping words: Jamie Milton Only four listens in so far but it feels like a thousand. 'Skeletal Lamping' is a tiring record to listen to certainly a tiring record to adjust to. Kevin Barnes, or should I say Georgie Fruit (the sex-fest loving alter ego of Barnes) takes us to places which the Georgia outfit looked unlikely to take us to when you look back at the days of 'The Sunlandic Twins' etc. They've sped past their own milestones without a second glance and Barnes' songwriting [...]

"This record is only for broad-minded people, who like to dance, make love and freak the f*ck out. It's not for most inanimate objects." -Kevin Barnes Check it . [...]
Rolling Stone have just posted a new of Montreal track from the forthcoming album Skeletal Lamping due this October. The track, called Nonpareil Of Favor, continues where Hissing Fauna.. left us wanting more, but there's a bit more edge to the new songs. The guitars are a lot heavier and dominate the sound a bit more, but the vocals are still trademark Kevin Barnes and you wouldn't want them to be anymore hysterical or desperate. Check it out for youself: of Montreal - Nonpareil Of Favor of Myspace [...]

I obviously don't hold a grudge against Kevin Barnes for selling out... Okay I lied. I am mad at K. Barnes for saying those things on youtube about what is and isn't selling out and how doing a commerical for outback isn't yada yada. Still, I did see them in concert last fall and the ticket stub is hanging on my wall right next to the Animal Collective stub. of Montreal is coming out with some new stuff and the newly released "I'd Engager" is slated [...]

when we really should be writing our theses, sheela and i have spent much time instead listening to of montreal , amusing ourselves with george bataille 's cameo on the epic "the past is a grotesque animal" and marveling at the vaudevillian absurdity of the "heimdalsgate like a promethean curse" video, both from last year's emotionally draining indie-disco-pop breakthrough hissing fauna, are you the destroyer? . the band has come a long way from its early lo-fi pop to becoming one of the last-standing elephant six bands still alive and kicking in the scene. their [...]

Lidt mere funk, lidt mere surf rock, [...]
You Ain't No Picasso talks to Kevin Barnes about the new Of Montreal album, and how his songwriting become lyrically and stylistically more personal: There was a weird, almost fascist state of mind in the Elephant 6 collective, at least...
Of Montreal's new record Skeletal Lamping, like the band's live show, is a take-it-or-leave-it showing of craziness. Songs not only have schizophrenic changes in melody, but are also lyrically at war with themselves from minute to minute. And as you might expect from a group who often perform in dresses, once in the nude and [...]

Of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping is set for a release on October 7th, and here you have the official artwork (via Pitchfork ). In fact, for all the juicy details, check out their post about the new album , as I can't really offer any more on this breaking news. But it's still very exciting! Of Montreal play Roseland Ballroom on October 10th. Last I checked tickets were still on sale .
It was a real treat to have Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal involved in this year's Hot Freaks! He was originally supposed to DJ as "List Christee" but a few minutes before he was supposed to go on, I was told that he wanted to play an acoustic set. Not ...
This will do it for our '08 SXSW coverage - but I wanted to make sure to throw up some photos from Saturday's Hot Freaks party. Highlights included: The Whigs bombastic set on the Mohawk's outside stage (at 1pm), Kevin Barnes covering the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and M.I.A.; Frankel's John Cale-like cover of [...]
So how cool was it when Kevin Barnes from Of Montreal dropped a cover of the Grateful Dead's "Shakedown Street" at the Hot Freaks show last Saturday afternoon at South By. That wasn't a question, really, it was a statement of fact. I damn near did a double take/listen when Barnes broke out the Dead classic, and he nailed it. Here is Kevin's cover followed by another Dead classic plus some of the originals of songs the Dead recorded over their long and illustrious career - [...]
Move over Wilco and My Morning Jacket, jam fans may have a new indie band to embrace - Of Montreal. While they may be best know for an insane arty stage show, nonsensical song names and the peddlers of the Bloomin' Onion - they are also no stranger to the art of the cover song [...] Move over Wilco and My Morning Jacket, jam fans may have a new indie band to embrace - Of Montreal . (photo cred. YANP ) Thanks to Lullabyes.net who recorded sets at Hot Freaks! again this year. As Lullabyes.net notes, the Kevin Barnes set was troubled from the start...lineup was running late, he was on a schedule, first a DJ set as List Cristee, then intended to be a Barnes solo-acoustic set...Barnes ended up borrowing an electric guitar from the White Rabbits, who were next up on the bill as busted out a [...]

Many thanks to Dave for the following write up from last nights Of Montreal gig in Newport, KY at the Southgate House. No reports of nudity or anything too shocking from Kevin Barnes, but we dont mind. Seeing a mammoth tour bus in the back of the normally subdued Southgate House was not something I expected for a show by Of Montreal. Nor did I expect a line extending down the steps and out onto the sidewalk, approximately encompassing 200 people. Nor did I expect the show to be sold out. [...]
