Matt Vincent has Kevin Devine and Jesse Lacey beat in the sadness sector

Matt Vincent has Kevin Devine and Jesse Lacey beat in the sadness sector As 20132s reply to the strong-but-weathered legacy of bands like Brand New or The Get Up Kids, and even Joan of Arc and The Anniversary, The American Scene's thoughtful, pop-infused indie rock is something too many fans of clever lyrics and depressing hooks have overlooked as of late. Kids seem to be sprinting past their merch table and gobbling up the more sugary, and even aggressive, output from their peers and label contemporaries at shows where TAS opens for The Story So Far, State Champs, et al. Meanwhile the boys keep pumping out incredible track after incredible track, [...]

LIVE: Silversun Pickups, Bad Books @ The Wellmont Theater

LIVE: Silversun Pickups, Bad Books @ The Wellmont Theater Photos by Dan Schenker Photography When you go to a rock show on a special holiday, you never know what to expect from the crowd. When that special holiday is Cinco de Mayo, you really don't know what to expect from the crowd. An uneasiness settled in when I first arrived at The Wellmont Theater, located in the heart of Montclair, New Jersey, for that very reason. Were attendants there to support the bands and have a good time or get drunk out of their minds? I was in no mood [...]

Danny Malone’s new video for ‘Spiderlegs’ is how I want my life to be

Danny Malone’s new video for ‘Spiderlegs’ is how I want my life to be If Beck-era "Sea Change" was actually written by Kevin Devine while he was high as hell and listening to a lot of Fiona Apple, he may've been Danny Malone. The Austin singer-songwriter just dropped the video for new single "Spiderlegs," a '90s-inspired piece showing Danny in his element -a barn where he actually resides and hosts a lot of shows- with just about everything a man would ever need: women, drinks, drugs, and a guitar. The low-lit scenes of Danny and his arm candy cutting lines and sipping from the bottle, kissed with jerky stop-motion and blurred out shots [...]

The burly looking Hull is wearing extra layers on this frigid February afternoon, battling a persistent cold, while his spritely stage partner leans on the balcony bar like a regular. Together, they [...]

New releases for the week of November 27, 2012

New releases for the week of November 27, 2012 Perhaps it's just because this week is a little on the light side or it might just be because we're in that lull between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but the new releases this week are far from the best we've seen. Don't worry, there are still plenty of gems. Rage Against the Machine have a new box set (pictured) titled XX , which is sure to please both liberals loving the band's message and conservative fans of Paul Ryan . Acts like Kevin Devine , Joan of Arc , and Railbird should help [...]

STREAM: Bad Books – “Forest Whitaker”

STREAM: Bad Books – “Forest Whitaker” With their second full-length album, simply titled II , out yesterday, it's very clear that Bad Books maintain their unique sound. In this second collaboration between singer/songwriter Kevin Devine and Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra , the duo have become even more willing to stray from their musical comfort zones, breaking free of some of the artistic tendencies that many fans have come to know and love them for in their other projects. “Forest Whitaker” sounds very much like their debut, yet nothing like it all at once. With hints of Nintendo pop synth [...]

[Listen] Bad Books - 'II' (Full Album Stream)

[Listen] Bad Books - 'II' (Full Album Stream) If you've been reading SKOA for a while you may know that I am personally a huge Manchester Orchestra fan. A few years ago I was pleasantly surprised to hear Andy Hull had teamed up with Kevin Devine for a side project titled Bad Books . The band is rounded out with the other members of Manchester Orchestra and the result was a melting pot of creativity and influence, and I thoroughly enjoy album one. They are now set to release album number two simply call, II. It will be released next week [...]
