For a Monday, there is a nice selection of shows in the region. In addition to The Shackeltons show that you can read about here , there are a couple of others worth noting. Kevin Devine - credit At The Black Cat , Kevin Devine , The Jealous Girlfriends and Dave Elkins come to town. This is sure to be a fun and sweaty time at the backstage. Our neighbors from NY, Brooklyn's The Jealous Girlfriends stunned and wowed a crowd out to see Kevin Devine and Dave Elkins (of Mae) last night at The North Star Bar here in Philadelphia. The band, made up of members Josh Abbott (guitar, vocals), Alex Lispen (keys, synth, and bass), as well as lead singer (and show-stealer) Holly Miranda (guitar and vocals), and Mike Fadem (on drums) fed off of their audience's attention and played a warm and shoegaze-y set of songs that was unexpected, climactic and surprising to most who stood clapping [...]

Conducted by Capt. Obvious Obvious: Your last album, Put Your Ghost To Rest, was released on Capitol Records, did you feel any sort of new pressure recording for a major label, and when can we expect a new album? Devine: It was a different experience completely, recording that record. It was the first one that wasn't done in New York (we were out in L.A.), the first one that wasn't done relatively cheaply, and the first [...]

Yeah, I know. I never update this thing anymore. All my recent posts have included promises that I'll get back on the ball and start posting regularly again. I've broken those promises, so I won't make any crazy claims this time. It's not that I don't want to post; it's just that I'm lazy and [...]

I opened my inbox the other day and I stumbled upon this little slice of heaven. In their own words " Mixtape Vol. 1, was compiled to celebrate Cross-Pollination, a weekly NYC concert series that brings together some of the most incredibly, and at times, undiscovered raw talent from across the country. Giving musicians the opportunity to stretch creatively with other like-minds, the premise of Cross-Pollination is simple. Every Tuesday evening at Pianos (158 Ludlow Street, NYC) two artists are invited to play together. Both of them play a solo 40-minute set followed by a 3 [...]

I got a chance to catch Kevin Devine play the Canopy Club last week. Although, there wasn't much of a show-up, Kevin Devine played a great show and it gave me a chance to see Matador's Jennifer O'Connor and upcoming band Koufax. Although I missed most of Koufax, from what I heard I knew that I would want to check them out some more on my own time. They're use of keys, swirling guitar, and passionate vocals make them pretty memorable Here's a couple tracks from their last album to check out: MP3 Koufax - [...]

Kevin Devine is more on the pop side of the indie spectrum, touring with with bands like Brand New and Straylight Run and being on Capitol Records and all. Don't let this stop you from giving him a listen though, he's very talented and his music is reminiscent of acoustic/folk acts like Elliott Smith and Ben Kweller. The first thing you take from the music are the melodies which are beyond catchy, but looking beyond that the lyrics and song structure are actually pretty good also. "Put Your Ghost To Rest", his latest album didn't get much recognition last year, [...]

Kevin Devine , Pablo (who I have previously posted about in a More Music Monday update), Koufax and Jennifer O'Connor will be touring together early next year. Dates: 1.30.07 DETROIT (MI) @ Magic Stick 2.01.07 BLOOMINGTON (IN) @ Indiana Univ. 2.02.07 CHICAGO (IL) @ Beat Kitchen 2.03.07 MADISON (WI) @ The Annex 2.04.07 [...]
I honestly despise "best of" end of the year posts. But I couldn't let my favorites be forgotten. And yes, if everyone else was jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge, I probably would too. Who wants to be left alone? Last year I compiled my favorite songs of the year , which I plan to do again, but I had to give props to the albums that were almost played to death for me this year. My list will be obvious to those who know me, and to those that aren't -- you will notice there is [...]

The cast of the forthcoming film For Your Consideration is on the cover of the December/January issue of Paste Magazine . A sampling of the mag's CD marks the end to the tyranny (and/or "peace and quiet", depending on your viewpoint) of No Music Day. I'm leaving bright and early for my Thanksgiving trip. I will likely be able to post a few songs a day, but there's a chance I won't. So I'll say Happy Thanksgiving now. I hope everyone reading this will be able to spend the day with the people they [...]

Not much time to write so I'll be brief. DELTA SPIRIT [MP3] Delta Spirit - Tom Gerald Delta Spirit will be the Monday Night Resident at Club Spaceland For December. Not bad for the San Diego act. Stay tuned for a friggin sweet contest we will be running with them in the next week or so. BRIERTONE [...]

It doesn't happen that often: a cd by a singer/songwriter with a "parental advisory explicit content" thingy. Could it be the explosions on the cover art -- napalm, a land mine? And do innocent kids recognize that instantly? The actual content of Put Your Ghost To Rest by Kevin Devine tackles heavy duty topics like suicide (bottom line, don't), the American Dream (a nightmare at times), friendship and loss. Kevin Devine offers some strong opinions that make sense, unless you are intellectually challenged beyond hope. Backed by The Goddamn [...]
I woke up this morning, ready to grab my badge and camera and head to Fader Lounge for a breakfast Red Stripe. Once I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, I realized that it was Monday. Back to work. No more free drinks. No more bandfest during the day. Sigh. I was a little bit sad. I'm sure the sadness will lessen as the days go by and I start to count down the days to SXSW. Austin is already calling my name. Anyways, here's a mix for you to enjoy. Back to regularly scheduled posts [...]
This made my day. You're welcome. MP3: Kevin Devine - The Longer I Lay Here MP3: Kevin Devine - You'll Only End Up Joining Them POSTED BY: Chris
Head on over to the album review section or click the link on the right column for a review of Kevin Devine's first major label release entitled Put Your Ghost To Rest. The review was not written by myslef but instead my fellow colleague here at A Shiny New Machine, Chris, who's opinion on albums I value dearly. After my own listen of the album I would mostly agree with him, it's a damn good album which I recommend you all picking up . On more of a personal note I would [...]
