When Kevin Drew co-founded Arts & Crafts, his label was intended simply as a way to get out the music of his band, Broken Social Scene. Now, ten years later, Drew gives PopMatters an unflinching look at the ups and downs of running one of the most influential labels out there today. Here's a little known fact about Broken Social Scene leader Kevin Drew: he is unflinchingly honest. Back in 2009, I had caught the Most Serene Republic at a gig in Salt Lake City, Utah. This venue was so small, in fact, that there's an honest-to-goodness pit campfire [...]

Just yesterday, electronic house producer KDrew (Kevin Drew) from Howell, New Jersey released the track "Halogen" via Soundcloud. "Halogen" has now already accumulated over 12,000 listens in less than 24 hours. It is a loud and unrelenting hardstyle song that builds with the intention of a freight train. You can listen to "Halogen" and download it above. Music Player: [...]

Richmond Lam Canadian music is quite often equated with rootsier stylings - which to be fair we do a lot of and well - but we can also get downright trippy when the mood strikes and a couple of the country's finest exemplars of this are back with new records this Spring. Montreal's Besnard Lakes have completed the follow-up to 20102s The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night and if the title - Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO - is any indication, [...]

With two new records being released, Broken Social Scene founder Kevin Drew will have a hectic 2013. The first is a collaborative project he's working on with songwriter Andy Kim (who penned The Archies ' 60's smash 'Sugar, Sugar') and the second is a solo album recorded with Do Make Say Think and Broken Social Scene's Charlie Spearin and Apostle of Hustle 's Dean Stone. Both projects should be out at the tail end of 2013. This all comes with this week's announcement of Drew's label Art & Crafts' 10th anniversary festival, [...]

It wasn't until the mid-'00s that Canadian independent music began to really make waves this side o' the pond. Broken Social Scene – the rather ironically entitled moniker to Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning's all-encompassing collective – had already released three full-lengths, the '05 eponymous third of which picked up umpteen plaudits here as well as being certified Gold over yonder, selling over 50,000 copies. Indeed, the duo's artistically embracive vehicle united members from such esteemed likes as Stars, and Metric, and Leslie Feist, and Reverie Sound Revue, and Do Make Say Think , and so forth. Startling records [...]
[Photos courtesy of Dana (distortion) Yavin. Â See more of her excellent work HERE .] Here at NYCTaper, we have a special place in our hearts for Dinosaur Jr . Not only do they make outstanding music and have chops second to none but they have long supported the taping community, making several appearances on this website including one of the first recordings posted here . We were particularly ecstatic when the original lineup of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph reunited in 2005 and have since released three superb albums. In the interim, we have [...]

Thrown from a colossally made cannon that’s been manufactured by chartable vocal strains and sunshine drenched scenes, KDrew sets his refreshed progressive outlook amongst those feathery and annoying pigeons - and comes back with a watertight killer. Glorious track... KDREW - All Or Nothing (Original Mix)

As with any type of artistic medium, it can often be tough to follow up a brilliant initial break through. Thankfully, Friday Night Lights creator and writer Peter Berg was up to the task of writing a well written drama intertwined with solid music with the second season of NBC's critically acclaimed football drama. The show continues in high gear, as the town of Dillon, Texas gears up for another season of Panther football. While Friday Night Lights is a show following a football in small-town West Texas, football takes a backseat to characters [...]
