This is one of the last big weeks for shows this year, and the biggest show is Broken Social Scene Wednesday night at Variety Plahouse. Tickets were still available at the time of this post, but I would suspect this will sell out at any moment. Friday has a ton of great concerts, but I highly recommend catching Castanets at The Drunken Unicorn. Last year the guys were just chilling at a local coffee shop without a booked show, when a native recognized the boys and insisted they play. Broken Social Scene agreed and quickly set up over at the Slowdown Jr. stage. The show was nearly sold out, but the crowd was well-behaved and the sound well-mixed and loud. The band was composed of the usual smattering of Toronto musicians; Lizzie Powell of Land of Talk supplied female vocals until her voice gave out in the first hour of the nearly two and a half hour set. TV on the Radio just released their third studio album, Dear Science, and it deserves almost as much praise as it is receiving. Pitchfork Media rated it a 9.2. They gave their last album, Return to Cookie Mountain, a 9.1. Someone up in Pitchfork obviously decided that TV on the Radio made a one-tenth-of-a-point improvement. Good for them, better for all of us. "Dancing Choose," the third track, bumps along on jittery percussion and a synth buzz throughout, deceptively beginning with a rushed pace before horns and guitars enter and change the feel of the song. Behind This Week's Snobcast: Dear Monolith, This year was a blast. One of the best shows of the weekend wasn't even at Red Rocks (Friday night's Cloud Cult VIP party at the Bluebird). Port O'Brien really kicked it off with their early slot on Saturday (or so I assume since I was still tailgating at that time). Cut Copy suffered from being placed in a day-time spot (meaning there was no light-show), kinda like Ghostland Observatory last year.
