The tenth edition of Wild Weekend already. Who knows where the time goes indeed, Sandy. But it´s on our side, right Irma? Here´s another six pack brought to you exclusively by that certain extraterrestrial who mans the shuffle function of my iPod. Phone home, dude. Time has come today. And away we go with Kevn Kinney, better known as the frontman of Drivin N Cryin. I always had a weak spot for his first solo album MacDougal Blues (´90). The title song charmingly tells of his exploits to [...]

We've been a little slow on the site lately thanks to my new full-time job out here in the Bay, but that isn't stopping us from welcoming friends to the site to start dropping some contributions in their own way. First up is our long-time friend, Ross McKillop, a recent New York City transplant from Vancouver. Hi, my name is Ross, and I'm a live music addict. So this is my first post on the Live Music Blog. I'd like to thank Justin for giving me the platform to bather on about [...]

[Photos by Michael Piantigini] It would be easy to go on for a thousand words about drivin n cryin (in fact, when I started this review it was starting to look like I would), because theirs has been a long and complex story since singer-sonwriter Kevn Kinney and bassist/mandolinist Tim Nielsen released the first album with the band's first lineup, 1986's Scarred But Smarter . So let's boil it down. Here's what you need to know: drivin n cryin are a part southern rock, part country rock, part folk rock, and [...]

Kevn Kinney's an easygoing, disarmingly funny kind of guy, but when he gets down to brass tacks - singing and wailing away on guitar, that is - he packs quite a wallop of soul, R&B, power pop, rock, folk, country, blues and more than a little grit. That's long been the secret sauce for the music he's made with Drivin' n' Cryin' and solo: easy to get into, often lighthearted and even funny, but let it get to you, and you realize it's loaded with heartbreak, wrenching drama and deep soul. [...]

Am I the biggest Fleetwood Mac fan ever? Definitely not. I'm pretty much a Rumours and Greatest Hits guy, although I can get into Tusk now and then. Still, everyone's gotta recognize that Rumours is one of the greatest rock albums ever, and most of their hits are solid. Plus, lotsa indie folks have covered them. So, they get an A to Z. Their most covered song, by far, is "Dreams." In this A to Z, I'm gonna rate the Dreams covers against the original, which rates an A+ as a pop [...]

I first experienced the lovely rock and folk songs of Kevn Kinney when my sister brought home Drivin n Cryin cassettes in the early 1990's. DnC emerged out of Atlanta in the mid-eighties and were influenced not only by Southern rock kings like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd , but also some of the new, inventive college-rock bands coming out of the area, like R.E.M. and Widespread Panic . Their albums ran the gamut from heavy metal-punk songs (thus the "Drivin") to soft, folky ballads (thus the "Cryin"). [...]
