In 2007, Kickball, a band from Olympia, WA (I think) released what is easily one of the gems of DIY garage rock from last decade. The circuitous title Everything is a Miracle Nothing is a Miracle is taken from "Pocketknife" -- a rollercoaster, crunchy standout from the album. I came across Kickball while hanging out with some folks in Fayetteville where they had played in their basement. Kickball probably spent most of their careers in basements, going from one place to another, making enough money to get to the next show. It's probably why [...]

My dearest Letter, Alexis Wolf, sent me this link to a recently-posted live performance of the one-and-only Kickball . It's from their 2007 tour of France with Clara Clara and it is ridiculously beautiful. One of my absolute favorite bands to see live. I do miss them so. Kickball- Fight (off Everything is a Miracle Nothing is a Miracle )

Picture July 2007 Awesome Garage Show Years ago I saw the Portland band Kickball in a garage. I was so impressed and thought that a band this talented could't possibly be such a little known secret. Soon after that show they took a long hiatus. Their most recent album, Everything is a Miracle Nothing is [...]

Let me tell you a story. In 2007 some notable things happened. I attended the annual music festival SXSW (the image above is of myself and The Lovely Sparrows' Shawn Jones, taken by Abandoned Love Records/Virgin Of The Birds' Jon Rooney), I grew a mustache, and I met a beautiful girl named Andi. She was waiting for her uncle (Eno of Spoon) at the Capitol Hill Block Party. We hit it off and ditched the after-party to get a sprite (her) and coffee (me) at Denny's in Ballard (sadly no longer there) at 1:30am. I [...]

The folks in Kickball are masters at timing. Their songs include light elements of math rock, but it's fairly subtle—not as prominent as, say, Battles, but still a viable part of the music found primarily in the slightly minimal but quite pointed guitar riffs and hefty, wild percussion. Even the vocals contain obscure timing on occasion. Just listen to "Fight" and you'll get my drift. One of my recent favorites is their 10" on white vinyl titled Everything Is A Miracle Nothing Is A Miracle Everything Is [...]

Olympia, Washington's KICKBALL have done what so many others have have done before them: create jangly/poppy/catchy/abstract music. Despite the emergence of bands like LOS CAMPESINOS! and JOHNNY FOREIGNER , it still seems like things remain slow in the band's camp. Sure, they've gotten some good press (most notably, being featured on KEXP in Seattle), but they're nowhere as well known as their skill warrants. I've chosen to take a look back at the abcdefghijkickball record from 2006. The album opens with "Little Thing", a infectiously catchy tune that sets the tone for the [...]
Saturday, April 19, 2008 Seattle - Greatest Place On Earth Everybody loves the city they're from. Everybody thinks that they place they were born, or spent their formative years in is the greatest place on Earth (this of course expelling the Midwest, sans Chicago, and most of Texas). Argue as much you want with anyone, but home is almost always where the heart is. I'm here to set you all straight though, I don't care where your from, New York, Chicago, Duluth (I feel sorry for you fellows [...]
I've been a champion of Olympia's Kickball for, like, 3 or 4 years now (whenever it was that I first heard "Stop ∞" (still my favorite Kickball track (as yet)), and I'm so delighted that they're still rollin' along. They've just finished up their 4th release, Everything Is A Miracle Nothing Is A Miracle Everything Is , and have it up for sale now on their Myspace . I bought it without pause, because I am sure I will love it. I think The Stranger nailed it in their recent review [...]
