Literally minutes after this song was released I sent it to Melanie with an "OMG LISTEN!!!!!!!!" because I knew she'd love it. It's a damn good song- punky and obscure with a solid "hell yeah" rock feeling. Who can't get behind a title like "Do It with a Rockstar"??? And it's available as a free download (in exchange for your email) here . Amanda Palmer - Do It with a Rockstar Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably heard about Amanda Palmer's [...]
Martin Atkins has a Kickstarter campaign to fund his new book Band:Smart . I made a pledge, and you should too. Here's why: The "advice for musicians" space is overcrowded, and to filter out the crap , we need to support the people that have actually lived what it is they're trying to tell us. As a touring musician, indie label owner and longtime participant in rock's underbelly, Martin Atkins knows what the fuck he's talking about. That Martin delivers his advice [...]

At a certain point in the digital music age, things changed. We went from heavy pirating, to buying songs on ITunes, to paying what we wanted, to Kickstarter. And while that's probably not how you expected things to progress, that's where we stand. I for one, am a big fan of Kickstarter as a vehicle for bands to make albums, and so it's my pleasure to let you know about two Cincinnati acts that have turned to the them, and their fans, for assistance. Seabird is getting ready to release their third album, and their [...]
The Dresden Dolls's former (and still occasional) frontwoman, Amanda Palmer, will release her sophomore solo album in September. An officially independent artist now, Amanda is currently running a Kickstarter campaign for fans to help fund the recording and just made the track "Do It With a Rockstar" available as a free, legal download on her [...]

Like many artists fed up with not making money via major record labels, Amanda Palmer said goodbye and sought to release her newest album on her own. Palmer decided to use the magical program as Kickstarter to do so. However, unlike past musicians, Palmer set a pretty high goal -- $100,000. Well, guess what. She made over $600,000 and still has 21 days to go. If there ever was a Kickstarter success story, I think this qualifies. Check out the rest of the Kickstarter news including how you can donate just $1 to get [...]

The bigger that sites like Kickstarter grow and the more commonplace direct fundraiser campaigns through them become, it's interesting to watch the different ways in which the services are utilized and the moral gray area that results. For example, what will happen to the nearly $8,000 Byzantine successfully solicited through Kickstarter to fund the recording of [...]
Of course, not every four piece of denim-and-lager-lads from Oswestry can pull off Kickstarter to quite this extent, but Amanda Palmer has generated nearly half a million dollars to fan-fund an album, book and tour. A further example of why trying to block torrent search engines will do nothing to stop the collapse of the major labels. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

Odd Future spin off, The Internet are the latest act to use new website Kickstart.com to fund a project. The creative pair of Syd Tha Kyd and Matt Martians are aiming to raise $15,000 to fund a new documentary and following yesterday's news that Amanda Palmer raised a whopping $400,000 in just two days through the site then it would seem the right way to go about it! The Internet's documentary, The Feng Shui Experiment , will be a full length feature about the making of the duo's new album while also taking [...]

Louisville's eccentric sci-fi harpist Erin Hill showed what can be done with a good kickstarter campaign . Earning over $34K from 303 backers, she financed a video for "Lookout, Science," the followup to "Giant Mushroom" from her upcoming album currently titled "Girl Inventor." Erin describes the ten songs to be like mini-episodes of the Twilight Zone. The new video premiered exclusively on USA Today , but is now available below. We last caught (and first met) Erin at Forecastle in 2009 where we had this to say about her... [...]

Allow me to present a hypothetical situation: Say you're a Flaming Lips fan. For months you've heard about this crazy Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends album that features collaborations from everyone from Chris Martin and Bon Iver to Prefuse 73 and Ke$ha. You want it badly. It's announced that the album will be a Record Store Day exclusive. You get to your local record store an hour before they open and find that there's already a line around the block. You wait regardless. When you finally make your way inside the store you find out that they [...]
You may know that we're big fans of 1,2,3 around these parts; we've hung out with them, we've listened to their music an unhealthy amount of times, we saw them live at SXSW more than any other act, they're cool fucking dudes, and their debut album "New Heaven" was voted as our Number One album of 2011 , but the guys have missed more than enough shows because of their van constantly breaking down on them. So they've started a Kickstarter [...]
New video from tUne-yArDs featuring a bunch of kids acting like Merrill Garbus and dancing in what seems to be a warehouse set up like a modern art show. The production was made in collaboration with The San Fransico Rock Project, which is a non-profit organization that helps educate children about music. They have a kickstarter campaign in support of this, check it out here . The video itself is a lot of fun and it is obvious that the kids involved were really into it, as their excitement is what makes the visuals effective. There is a great amount of camera movement and quick [...]
