Minneapolis based Kid Dakota has always managed to musically conjure a sacred space where beauty and tragedy overlap. On A Winner's Shadow, guitarist Darren Jackson and drummer Ian Prince leave behind that dusty, windswept panorama of the Midwest and trade it for an urban landscape that crackles and pulses with electric life. Against this backdrop, we experience the awe and terror of the songs' narrators as they navigate loneliness, loss and love. A Winner's Shadow takes the edge off these weighty themes with the gorgeous melodies, pop sensibilities, and wall of sound production that characterize the band's acclaimed [...]

(via STNNNG's MySpace Page ) Even though the flier at the top of the post is for one specific show only, the name of it seems apt for all of the Minnesota bands headed to SXSW this week. In order to help SXSW patrons decide which Minnesotan groups they want to see whilst in town for the four-day fest, we've decided to put together a little playlist of all the bands we know of (if we missed any, feel free to name them off in the comment section). Note: the times listed are for when the Minnesotan [...]

1. Via Audio - Enunciation - I'm fairly sure there are multiple points in this song where you'll think you know where it's going. Then, 10 seconds later, you're wrong. But you're not upset about it; you revel in it. You listen to it on repeat. [from Say Something... | buy ] 2. The Basics - Baby, Let Me In - Wally De Backer (Gotye) has those golden pipes and the rest of this Australian 3-piece has the '60s groove down pat. [...]

While on the road over the weekend, my very good buddy John Krueger and I put together this local mix that turned out pretty great. It features a few rarities that are damned hard to find, plus some downright classics. Download: Atmosphere - "Give Me" Download: Awesome Snakes - "Shut Up!" I first listened to Kid Dakota about two or three years ago. It was some tunes from 'So Pretty' which included the excellent song 'Smokestack'. I think it's the amazing use of quiet and loud that sets them apart from the crowd. Kid Dakota - Smokestack Kid Dakota - The Overcoat Kid Dakota - So Pretty Kid Dakota - Pilgrim (Video)

It doesn't take a whole lot of effort to update this thing, and yet I rarely do. Oh well. As I promised a week ago, here is an oversized mix to shut up the three people who whine at me to update more. Due to its rather large nature, there are going to be some songs that you won't like, but that's not my problem. At least your bases will be covered, eh? Also, it's a cat in an aeroplane. i remember reading a review a good while ago, of kid dakota's the west is the future , and there's something about the title that really resonnates with me. whenever i start to talk about it, though, i track onto manifest destiny from high school history lessons, and mr. batrick's 'crude maps' of america, which mostly turn out looking like scarred elephants. the reviewer seemed pretty disappointed with the mediation on D. Jackson's drug addiction, in 10,000 lakes, where he sings 'I didn't come for ice-fishing, I didn't come for duck hunting,' and finishes with 'I came to get [...]
