Meet my newest obsession, the fantastically dark folksy tunes of Kid Harpoon. I have no idea now where I first came across this man, but I've been absolutely hooked ever since. Kid Harpoon has released two EPs (First EP and Second EP, of course) on the Young Turks label over the last 6 months. Though, to [...]
(Image pinched from Gregory Nolan) I'd heard all sorts about Kid Harpoon's much-vaunted live performances, so I was really looking forward to this gig and for the most part he didn't disappoint. Support came from new Scottish group We See Lights who seemed decent, although I didn't get there in time to catch enough of their set [...]
There's some good stuff in the 'Burgh this week, including a couple of highly recommended local folk acts that I have yet to catch live, so it might mean the domestic chores getting put on hold for another week. I've heard a fair bit recently about both My Kappa Roots and Withered Hand and [...]

Here's somebody who believes in value for money. When most artists release an EP it's usually four songs. Some even have the temerity to call a three-track single an EP. With the third track a live recording. But not Kid Harpoon . He's now onto his second EP for Young Turks Records and like the first (see my review of that here ), he's crammed six tracks on. So that's a whole album's worth of new material before any long-player is even released. Good on him. All of this would of course count for [...]

After yesterday's minor diversions, I'm back on track with more of the usually kind of Daily Growl stuff (breathe more easily, Mr. Toad). Like singer-songwriters. I'm not going to buy into the journalistic cliché which says that there are too many singer-songwriters around today. There may be a lot, but like all kinds of music, some will be good and I'll listen to them and write about them, and some will be bad and I'll ignore them. Kid Harpoon is definitely in the former category, so here goes. Kid Harpoon is the alter ego of Tom [...]

After posting Kid Harpoon's cover of Going Down (one of the singalongs of the summer, for me at least), I felt I should do him justice with a post of his own. Hailing from the same stable of slightly psychedelic, Sid Barrett-influenced Twickenham bands as Mystery Jets and Larrikin Love, Kid (Mr Harpoon?) didn't enjoy the same level of fame as they did, although looking at their fates, that is probably for the best in the long run - better to be a slow-burner than a fad, surely. Still, his music is instantly familiar, solosingersongwriter fare, but with a genuine [...]

OK, I seriously need to stop starting blog-posts with "I'm back again, folks!"/"Sorry for the absence, guys"/"OMG has it been two months already?!!1!". So, what brought me back this time? Hard to say... it could be FileDen sending me an e-mail to say "Bitch, you better start paying our site some regular visits, and not just waltz in when you feel like it, or your fine ass is so out of here". Well, they didn't say that in so many words, but the part about my ass was definitely implied. One other thing could be my [...]

Much loved and hyped by this blog , and a million others Beirut were due to play their first ever headlining London gig last sunday. Sadly at the last moment an announcement was made : "the attendant stress of organizing and traveling with a full-blown, 12-person orkestar took its toll. Having put all of his energy into each and every performance, Zach was briefly hospitalized with extreme exhaustion." To say I was disappointed was an understatement, especially give the universally glowing reviews [...]
