I haven't really listened to much of anything that could be considered "indie rock" lately, but the new self-titled album from Chicago's Inspector Owl might just be enough to make me change my ways. The band doles out heavily-layered melodic songs that reference everything from post-this to new-wave that and even classic rock. There's also a sure-footed rhythmic anchor to the buoyant melodies that's noticeable without being the focus. After all, Inspector Owl's primary weapons are the bubbly synths and jagged guitars that weave in and out of focus. It's funny that I was almost tempted to call [...]

Kid, You'll Move Mountains , "New Blood" (from Loomings [ BUY ]) You might remember that KYMM's 2009 debut, Loomings , was picked by Red Eye Chicago as the #1 Chicago album of 2009 (and a Top 10 album overall), and praised by Jim DeRogatis and the Chicago Reader , among many others. Well, the good news is that the band is hard at work on album #2, and they're aiming for a late Fall 2011 release! More news on this front [...]
So Record Store Day was a few weeks ago and I played my first show in something like 9 years (I counted) the eve before and opened for Kid, You'll Move Mountains . In addition to having my wife in my corner, fellow bloggers Reba (from Love Shack Baby ) and Steve (from Baby Stew ) were there supporting me as was Josh from Rock And Roll Brunch and The American Autumn . Heck, I even saw Mark and Joe from Division . Those people are all great and awesome for [...]
A week from this coming Saturday is Record Store Day 2011. That's April 16th folks. Go out, buy some vinyl and support your local independent record stores. I'll be checking out the Midnight Sale at Kiss The Sky in Geneva, IL and doing my part. Before that sale starts, I'll be hanging out with my friends from Kid, You'll Move Mountains who are playing a FREE all ages show on Friday night before the RSD sale right next door. The coolest part of this is that I'm opening for KYMM with [...]
It was a few weeks ago that the wife and I headed out to DeKalb, IL to a really cool venue called the House Cafe to see Maritime and our pals in Kid, You'll Move Mountains . Gold Motel also played. We met up with the great bloggers from Baby, You Got A Stew Goin' and Love Shack, Baby and also drank well into the night with Jim & Jen You'll Move Mountains and a couple of the good dudes from Sock Monkey Sound . So, yeah, it was a [...]
This is a song from our 2009 album "Loomings" which we self-released. We're from the Chicago suburbs and like waffles. - Jim - Kid, You'll Move Mountains
Friday night the Mrs. and I headed out to our first show at what is probably Chicago's newest live music venue, Lincoln Hall . It's the new space from the same guys who've owned Schubas (one of our faves) for years and they really didn't miss a thing. The main bar looks like just about any other recently renovated space in the neighborhood, but the live room is great. It's not a huge room, but feels much larger with it's high ceiling and large wrap-around balcony. Lincoln Hall is brand-spanking-new and (thus) everything [...]

my goal for 2010 is to try and post at least ten times a week. it really shouldnt be that hard, considering i have been doing that for the better part of 4 years, but judging by my output as of late, it may very well be. my slowdown really has just been due to my recent bouts with these god damn panic attacks, which for some reasons seemed to have been plaguing me for the past couple months. they just came out of nowhere, and i really cant pinpoint their cause, which is even more irritating. anyone else battle [...]

By Alex Schaaf Kid, You'll Move Mountains is an infectiously energetic group based out of Illinois that has been gaining in recognition lately. Jim Derogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times reviewed the band's album , Loomings, saying that KYMM is "a (band) with an optimistic moniker and an effervescent sound that amply justifies it." This band is a great example of what hard work and dedication can get you, and they are set to play one of their biggest shows yet at the Metro in Chicago this coming January [...]
Did you know that on January 2nd, 2010, Chicago's Metro will be the host of the Greatest Show Ever featuring the likes of CYSTSFTS faves Kid, You'll Move Mountains and Venna as well as Picture Books and Crayolala. Best of all, the bands are all offering up their latest releases for free at www.greatestshowever.com plus the show is free (with printable flier) before 9PM. Seriously? I'll be there and you should too. Related posts: A recap of the Smoking Popes [...]

So this is it. My favorite full-length albums of the year. So many other blogs post their top songs of the year, but I guess I'm a bit more old-school (and probably older) than most of them. I prefer the album format rather then just ranking singles against one another. I posted Part I of this list yesterday, but there are so many good albums from 2009 that I had to leave off the list completely (unless I was going to make it an even 100). Maybe next year, right? Also, fuck all the [...]
Okay. I just have to say that Jim from the band Kid, You'll Move Mountains has got to be one of the nicest people ever on the face of the earth (and I'm not just saying this because his band is great even though they are). Let me explain... I've seen KYMM live and met Jim in person exactly once. That's it. We've exchanged all sorts of electronic communications (email, Twitter, Facebook, etc...) but have only met in person once despite both living in Chicago's Western suburban wasteland. Considering that I'm floored that he has [...]
I'm starting to run out of stuff to talk about for these FF lead in's. *ponders* It finally rained here after 2 months. *thinks* Going to Europe for two weeks soon, so, any suggestions bars, bands, sites in the UK and Germany are appreciated. Unfortunately, that means the fix will be on vacation for two weeks (maybe) as well, depending on time and internet access! Ladyfinger (ne) - Little Things (2009, Omaha, Nebraska) Any readers out there from Omaha? Perhaps you can answer why such great bands come from there? Does [...]
Kid, You'll Move Mountains is easily the best band from Chicago's Western 'burbs (my stomping grounds) that I've heard in quite some time but for whatever reason, I've been meaning to review Loomings (their most recent release) for, like, forever. Maybe the reason I haven't is that the band makes comparisons difficult. I don't usually have trouble with saying this band sounds like that one, but KYMM incorporates so much good stuff that, frankly, I'm having trouble. Loomings is chock full of indie-post-whatever rock that's equally piano/guitar based and complete [...]

I must apologize for not having posted in so long. But I won't dwell. More consistent posting from here on out (at least for a while). I wanted to share loads and loads of stuff with you today/tonight. I've been sent lots of different EPs from artists and bands trying to get the word out. I've been waiting to do a post like this and now I'm finally doing it. Wow, empowering. So the following is (in no particular order) some of the best stuff I've received. 1. Alex Gladwell - Fantasia [...]

Kid, You'll Move Mountains is appropiate band name if the members are into groundbreaking music. Loomings , the deubt album by this Chicago indie rock band shows some promise - interesting rhythms galore, but they need some work on the messing of the vocals and the music. The vocalists have a hard time keeping up with the changes laid down by the Lanthrum brothers who should tell their sister that she should focus on the piano. Jim Hanke doesn't have much of voice either. They need a singer with an above average range to pull [...]
Kid You'll Move Mountains take a break from touring to deliver their latest album Loomings

After their label Lookout! Records dissolved, and their band split, Nate (drums) and Andrew Lanthrum (bass) of Troubled Hubble, formed Kid, You'll Move Mountains with like-minded Midwesterners, guitarist/vocalist Jim Hanke from El Oso and guitarist Corey Willis of Inspector Owl with Nina Lanthrum adding piano and vocals. "Loomings", their self-released debut is built around a tight rhythm section, ambient and jittery guitar lines and stunning male/female vocal interplay, reminds me of everyone from Rainer Maria and The Anniversary to the eclectic indie-rock of Dismemberment Plan and Archers Of Loaf. And as interesting as all of those names are, [...]

From their excellent new, debut album - "Loomings" Amid the much publicized downfall of Lookout! Records, indie-poppers Troubled Hubble took a cue from their then label and officially ended their traveling party in 2005, leaving brothers Nate and Andrew Lanthrum without an ensemble for their energetic rhythm section. Retreating home to their practice space in the rural Illinois suburbs, the siblings recruited fellow Midwest musicians – guitarist Corey Wills, of Chicago’s Inspector Owl; guitarist/vocalist Jim Hanke, of Milwaukee’s El Oso; and classically trained pianist/vocalist [...]
Let me start this post by stating the following: a fair majority of unsigned bands don't have record deals for a reason. I get plenty of unsolicited emails from bands hoping to get noticed and secure blog support for their poorly recorded album that lacks a certain professional polish and songcraft we all take for granted on a daily basis. But I do still listen to at least one track from every band that sends me something, just in case it turns out to be really, really good or catch my fancy or something. On very infrequent occasions, I'll write [...]
