This Australian band issues a new album with a 20-plus-year-old record tacked on as a bonus. One is a rough gem, the other is downright delightful. There have been a few bands named the Killjoys. There was a '70s UK punk/new wave band and, most famously to me as a Canuck, a '90s Canadian alternative rock band that had a few near hits in their homeland. However, the Killjoys up for review here is a boy-girl Australian band that has been around since the late '80s. Their latest release, Pearl, offers interested listeners two facets of their sound in [...]
Five years ago on this date, Grant McLennan died in his sleep from a heart attack at the age of just 48. Along with Robert Forster, he shared songwriting and vocal duties in the brilliant but unappreciated Australian band The Go-Betweens. I've always put the pair up there with popular music's most celebrated writing partnership: [...]

A new dancehall track from crusher 77Klash just hit called "Kill Joy". It samples one of the better singalong reggae dancehall songs ever in the chorus, "Here Comes The Hotstepper" (a natural killer on its own), and features a rap back-and-forth between Klash and his friend BRNTN. Get ready for those singalongs and get your [...]
I must offer full disclosure before reviewing Roger L. Trott's book, Getting in Tune . I myself grew up in Northern California, all my guy friends were in bands, and I desperately love the Who. So when I picked up this rock fiction book about a band from a small northern California town with a main character that worships Pete Townshend, I had a sneaking suspicion I'd love it. Set in the late 70's, Getting in Tune tells the story of Daniel Travers, a guitar player whose wrestling with his demons. He's also struggling to [...]

I never intended to put together a 24 song, 77 minute power pop mix. It just happened. One night I found a reissue of Flippin Out, a mid-nineties power pop gem by the Boston band, Gigolo Aunts, on eMusic. Later that same night, I found myself buying the out-of-print three decade power pop compilation, Poptopia, that Rhino released in 1997 (for a considerable mark-up I must add). It didn't end there, as the next two weeks I was obsessively scouring the internet and tearing through my old cd rack in search of the best power pop music ever made. The [...]
Part 3 is here. I can't believe how much of a bitchslap I got for leaving out some great bands but I am sure I deserved it. haha. If I was to do it over, I would surely include Bad Brains, Dag Nasty, Bad Religion and Black Flag. Hope you like these... Thanks for all the K suggestions. I figured I would do something a bit more obscure. I: Ignition - Rebuilding J: J Church - Tightrope K: Killjoys - [...]
Today, I've gone through the vaults of I Rock Cleveland and came up with Starry, the debut disc by the Hamilton, Ontario power pop trio, The Killjoys. I had the hardest time tracking down Starry in the nineties. I had to buy a Canadian import in the early days of the internet. I had an even harder time tracking down informatioin on the band today. There's no wiki, no official website, and the fan site hasn't been active in years. The Killjoys released three albums between 1994 and 1998: Starry, Gimme Five, and Melos [...]
