I'm going to keep this short and sweet, just like the tunes on The Terrordactyls ' self titled long play debut which came out at the beginning of this month. They've packed fourteen tracks into a little under thirty-seven minutes. We're not talking about a Ramones album here though - these little ditties are cute, quirky, and offbeat. Besides lyrics that are straight out of left-field (yet still make perfect sense), the duo of Michael Cadiz and Tyrel Stendahl playfully add complementary instrumentation such as toy pianos and [...]

Photo credit: Joanna Branson With her debut full-length Faces in the Rocks Nevada City songwriter Mariee Sioux has recorded one of this year's most breathtaking and haunting albums. I was lucky enough to witness her spine-chilling performance on a beautiful afternoon in Amsterdam several weeks ago. That afternoon her songs seemed enriched with spiritual tales and Native American imagery. Her songs worked very well with just Mariee Sioux on guitar (see video below). What struck me the most that day was that these songs that sounded so sweet and light-hearted on cd, [...]

With all it's critical buzz and an opening weekend per screen average that was through the roof , Juno is already this year's little movie that could -- ala Little Miss Sunshine . One of the reasons that it's such an easy movie to root for is the underdog soundtrack that backs it, revolving around the music of Kimya Dawson , and we have actress Ellen Page to thank for that connection: (Director) Jason Reitman and I were meeting...and he simply said, "Well, [...]

Juno is about a girl. Juno MacGuff is a 16 year-old girl who attends Dancing Elk High School. She walks the halls to her own beat. Life is pretty ordinary for her until she gets pregnant, thanks to Paulie Bleeker. Juno tells her parents about her unexpected pregnancy and then has to make a decision. She decides to find a set of parents using her local Penny Saver. As Juno's due date becomes closer, her physical changes mirror her personal growth. The Trailer . Juno hits theaters nationwide on Friday, December 14th. The 5th in NY&LA. [...]

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to attend a free screening of the movie Juno in Washington DC. It is a quirky movie directed by Jason Reitman ( Thank You For Smoking ) about a 16 year-old girl who becomes pregnant [preview below]. Although, at times the humor felt a little forced, this was a very enjoyable movie to watch, that I highly recommend you go see when it releases in December. If you are in a big city, it is possible that Fox Searchlight is offering several free screenings before then, so you may want to check [...]

Mike Kelley - Frankenstein (1989) Kimya Dawson - I Like Giants (mp3): Kimya writes everyday parables that are straight forward enough to fit into children's books. But instead of discouraging youth from chewing on the binding, she enjoys the wetting of the cover's watercolored clouds that she'd describe as "cute as fuck". Poingnat lessons engorge blunt red from the reckless honesty of her speeding words. She is the beautiful difference between [...]

Hopefully you had a chance to see Kimya Dawson at the Midtown Dickens cd Release party on May 12th. My wife's graduation from Duke and family and friends being in town prevented me from going to the event, but hey how often do you get a chance to see your wife graduate from Duke and how often now a days can you actually spend Mother's Day with your mom, so the trade off was fair. Honestly I wasn't familiar with Kimya Dawson. I mean I knew she was in Moldy Peaches and I knew [...]

Anyone remember the Married...With Children episode in which Al gets a song on the radio stuck in his head and can't identify it? It drives him crazy, and he ends up visiting a record store with a famed employee who can identify any song if you hum him a bar or two. Of course, Al knows the whole chorus but the guru comes up empty (the guy before him hums about two notes to get his answer). Poor
I think Kimya Dawson and I would be good friends. We could go shopping for scarves even though it's warm, ride bicycles, and give each other high fives when one of us says something particularly clever. Her lyrics are strong and smart, and her voice lends a beautiful tenderness to every song (whether it be about war, death, or childhood heroes turned sexual offenders). Oh yeah, she was originally in The Moldy Peaches. Double oh yeah, her and her fellow just had an adorable little baby! Stop by her myspace to befriend and congratulate her. You can find [...]
