The ever-lovely Kimya Dawson has gathered her musical friends and their respective children for the recording of her latest record, Alphabutt . With that in mind, Alphabutt clearly focuses on the presence of the children equally as much as Dawson's conductive input. At times I imagine scenes of pre-school, where the children are huddled around Dawson as she teaches them about faeces and body hair - a scene that is warm, silly and hilarious. Dawson's clever lyrical work clearly shows her humorous side to the point it where education becomes fun. Alphabutt might [...]

Nah, this isn't about T.I. or Busta or Fitty. This is about a chappie who decided to gun down a neighbor who just wanted to play his music, man! Why ya gotta be so cold, man? Can't a bro just enjoy his tunes without gettin' shot, man? This isn't news (well, it is, but not music news), but I'm doing an experiment for Sarah and setting up all the links in this entry to open in new windows and you guys can let me know whether or not you like it. If you make sure your [...]
snapped these while in wicker park a few weeks back. is this place still open? Kimya Dawson "Michael Jackson"

kimya dawson , who identifies first as a mother and as a musician and artist second, will follow up the juno soundtrack , on which she and the moldy peaches were prominently featured, with a new album of children's music called alphabutt . the album is due out in early september and includes songs with titles such as "i like bears," "wiggle my tooth," and "pee pee in the potty," but our favorite out of the gate is probably "we're all animals," on which dawson sings: "sit out in the [...]
Who: The Verve Title: Forth Release Date: August 26th Label: Megaforce Records Thoughts: I honestly can't believe I listened to this whole album. Back when they were having their successful run in the 1990's I was not a big fan of The Verve, mostly due to my running in the pop punk circles and not the Brit-pop circles. But since my tastes have changed and expanded I thought I'd give them a chance
But Jesus Christ. Why are you in a movie with a soundtrack that is likely to be as horrible as Juno's ? Because really, with the exception of about four bands, the Juno soundtrack sucked. And it has done more to slay independent music and pervert the term "indie" more than, well, about anything else going on right now. I'd just like to let Kimya Dawson's vapid lyrics speak for themselves: So if you wanna burn yourself remember that I love you And if you wanna cut yourself remember [...]

Dream Bitches Genre: Lyrical / Garage / Americana From: Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Manhattan, New York, United States With a name like Dream Bitches you could be excused for expecting a new group of riot grrrls on the block but take a listen to 'Coke-and-Spiriters' , their second album and it soon becomes [...]
Continuing on with our "coverage" of the weekend, here are my experiences (straight from my eyes and head-spooky) from Day 2 at Ye Ol' Block Party. The day was highlighted by an even bigger crowd full of people doing their darnedest to look ugly, several more first time encounters with a band (6 out of 9!), the ridiculous amount of trash produced by all the free garbage being given away (Jones Soda, Monster, Kettle Corn), and a delicious Polish sausage to accompany my High Life. To the music... The Cave Singers [...]

55,000's a Crowd by Alex Carnevale Sometimes in a crowd there is an eye of the storm, where you are coexisting equitably with the rest of the world. But for the most part we seem intent on being closer together to one another than common decency dictates. My friend Bernard is planning on dumping his new roommates, an unsightly couple. Apparently they correct his behavior. For the past year I've commuted two [...]
I've recently been catching up on my queue of All Songs Considered pod casts and it reminded me of a point that has been nagging me for a while..on several of the episodes I listened to host Bob Boilen bring on Pitchfork Senior New Editor Amy Phillips to go through the albums featured or, in one case, discuss the anthems of the Y Generation. Maybe it's just me, but is it a contractual obligation for Pitchfork editors/writers to be contrarians just for the sake of it? In one episode, everyone was sort of [...]

Dream Bitches are a New York band that have been together for five years and recently released their second album, Coke-And-Spiriters . Their sound reminds me slightly of Australian indie-punkers The Grates but Dream Bitches lack the energetic front-woman that The Grates have in the form of Patience Hodgson. Incidently, The Grates have a new single out. The reason I've mentioned the energetic Hodgson is that if Dream Bitches [...]
