So, Record Store Day is over, the subsequent hangover dispatched, a tedious day of sitting around waiting to find out about jury service has been put to bed. I've been out to Bathgate in order to be fucking terrible at football, returned to Edinburgh to watch United claim their 20th title, and now here I sit at my computer wondering what the rest of the week holds for me. Boundless excitement, I am pretty sure. Actually, after last week's Beer vs. Records (bored of that yet?) and the forthcoming Sparrow and the Workshop album launch shows, there is still a [...]

Metz , Howler , Alt-j ?

Today we countdown songs 40-21 in the Mad Mackerel Favourite 100 tunes of the year. You can check out the previous days entries here: 100-81 , 80-61 , 60-41 . 40 ALABAMA SHAKES - HOLD ON Almost a head-banger done country style, love the underlying guitar rhythm. ILLUSTRATION BY LYDIA CONKLIN Another year has passed, and with that comes our best attempt to gather our favorite tracks and order them from best to, well, the very best. This collective is about as subjective as it gets - it's not something that necessarily represents what was popular or what certain sites wrote about. It's simply the music we loved in 2012. Without further ado, we present to you our list of the top 100 songs of 2012. While we had a blast putting this together, it didn't come without an argument or two. What [...]

Continuing my trend of writing about sibling acts , here I declare you ought to spend Sunday night with Jessica Lea Mayfield and her brother, David Mayfield , courtesy of Lightning 100. The Mayfields are a fine example of the great interconnectedness of all music happenings in and around this town of ours. In addition to having lived in Music City there are numerous local ties with these two. After performing in her family’s bluegrass band with brother, David, Jessica Lea Mayfield was “discovered” via home recordings by now Nashville resident, Dan Auerbach of The [...]
• Facebook • Twitter • Delicious • Email • RSS What a terribly harrowing task it is to make a best of the year list, and really who the hell am I to deem what gets included and what stays on the spreadsheet? Well, I'm a guy with a blog so I guess that's who I am. I thought at first I would have a difficult time gathering 50 albums, quickly I realized that was not the case - there were [...]

I may have paid attention at 'has played support to Lucy Rose, King Charles & Kyla La Grange'. This is Hot Feet , 'Under October'. And it may have taken me a minute to get into; as soon as it breaks into something fuller, richer I'm a little bit sold. With early Marling-esque mixed with Mariner's Children vibes, Hot Feet (I LOVE that name by the way) promise to be bigger live and probably something we should all be listening to in these cooler (or wetter) Autumnal days in London. It'll warm your feet and leave you feeling [...]

If you judge a blog post about an artist by the picture accompanying the blog post, then you would immediately think that King Charles was a character from the movie The Princess Bride . You would be wrong. In fact, King Charles is a singer songwriter from London who has released a delightful folk-pop record this year. The man is quite gifted musically, playing guitar, cello and piano (according to wikipedia) and it all shows in the music, which is extremely pleasant. The man opened for Mumford & Sons earlier this year for part of [...]

Well she doesn’t dribble anymore, but perhaps that will start again with the advancement of teenage years after one shandy too many – who knows?! Daughter sprat swam to big school this week with a song in her heart (one from King Charles , actually) and a spring in her step, in her hugely positive and wholly optimistic way. I miss her already. Little Sprat and I are left to sing our way to school on our lonesome - “ When I was a child/My mother said to me/You can’t spend all your days alone/In the shade [...]
King Charles is one of those men at a festival like Reading 2012 that all you have to do is just have to look at him to make out that he’s not just a regular punter, he’s an artist. “I am king of a new sound, calling on a new generation towards revolution.” When an interview starts like that, well, it’s difficult not to realise that we have something special in our midst. Looking like a trustafarian mix between Bob Marley and Jamie [...]

Since Friday, we’ve been in the midst of the Wilderness , just a stone’s throw from Mackerel Mansions. The atmosphere is easy-going, good-natured, anything goes – and this couldn’t be better surmised by my youngest sprat’s wry observations on life in camp. In keeping with the Happy Olympics drawing to a close today, he awarded bronze, silver and gold awards for his key festival moments… Bronze goes to the young man (early 20s) who challenged him to a short sprint towards the main stage and then promptly fell flat on his face before high fiving Joe (aged [...]
Although it's been ten years since State last ventured across the water to partake of the UK's most established folk, roots and acoustic event, on the surface not much at Cambridge Festival has changed. It feels a relatively small site, an L shape with each of the two main stages at either end, and the sight of row upon row of camping chairs set out for the day is still at odds with the usual festival experience. Yet as we wander around we do find some nice new additions, particularly The Den stage that will play host to [...]

So far this year, we've had some pretty amazing developments in the world of indie music. The meteoric rise of rookies Purity Ring , Alt-J (more so in the UK), and The Neighbourhood , matched equally by the return of Passion Pit , The Shins , fun. , and Hot Chip , have already ensured that 2012 won't be a dud. Below, we've listed in order our top 50 songs so far of this fine year. CLICK HERE FOR OUR TOP 15 [...]

By Alex Ward July 8, 2012 It's the third and final day of lounging about on the farm. Unlike the first few days, things were rather slow when midday came around. Have been woken up by a horrendous rain shower, my hopes of a dry day were ruined. However, my spirits were picked up by the first band of the day: Zoo For You , a local band from the Canterbury area. Their music sounds like a jazzy, funky Ian Dury with the punk taken out. They played songs such as 'Polystyrene Man,' [...]
Words by Hannah Saul The island of Guernsey is generally a very quiet, historical place, but for one weekend every summer, the tranquil island says goodbye to the monotony of island life and welcomes families and music lovers alike to grab their wellies and head over to the Rabbit Warren, the location of Guernsey Festival. The festival is in its second year and has already played host to bands heavyweights Primal Scream, Frank Turner and The Gaslight Anthem. While islanders jumped at the chance to have the [...]

king charles feat mumford and sons - the brightest lights [sing along folks cause this is the only mumford related anthem you'll have all summer! plus the kooky king charles ain't half bad himself!] http://feeds.feedburner.com/Wo ngiesMusicWorld

As 'the king of unrequited love' King Charles doesn't seem to mind boasting of his losses and in his new album 'LoveBlood' there are three songs, so he says, dedicated to 'Mississippi Isabel' and the below is one of his correspondences to Isabel that speak of his affection. To Mississippi Isabel, Thinking of you and the torment of unresolved passion I harbour leaves me with the loving feeling that comes but always goes. Now that I am like stagnant water that yearns to flow, like a raindrop [...]
![KING CHARLES TEAMS UP WITH MUMFORD & SONS [VIDEO]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4329259_lg.jpg)
This may be a bold claim, but I can truly say that King Charles (@kingcharlesuk) is one of my favorite musicians. When I first saw him perform in London in 2009, his unorthodox stage presence had me floored - I had never seen someone climb the walls of a music venue sporting a sparkling unitard all while shredding it on guitar. His hair was another story entirely! This personality and absurdity shines through in his new video for "The Brightest Lights", which features Charles' buddies, Mumford & Sons . This glorious [...]

Not nearly as good as King Charles' previous singles.. Buy "The Brightest Lights": iTunes UK | iTunes US
