When Scottish singer/songwriter King Creosote (aka Kenny Anderson) and electronica-tician/ producer Jon Hopkins decided to form a rather unlikely musical alliance, who could have imagined that their 2011 collaborative debut album Diamond Mine would become an equally unlikely critical phenomenon in the U.K. Nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize and prominent on a slew of year end Best of lists, the project involved the inspired reworkings of King Creosote songs spanning a couple of decades. Last month Diamond Mine was reissued in an "expanded" version, [...]
Just over a year since it was released, Diamond Mine was one of those tiny albums that transcended its very specific appeal to end up on many critics best-of-year list and got itself a Mercury nomination into the bargain too. The original seven-track album was built from years of writings and observations from Scotland’s King Creosote and Jon Hopkins ' delicate instrumentation. Not just a collection of songs, but an album as a whole, flowing and almost narrative-like from the opening voice of a Scottish coffee-shop server and the clink of cups to a simple acknowledgement in [...]
King Creosote & Jon Hopkins: "Bats in The Attic" King Creosote & Jon Hopkins’s album Diamond Mine (Domino) was one of the more enigmatic and engaging releases of 2011 - another recent album posting that made it to my top 40 of 2011 . Yesterday we caught the new video for "Third Swan" - an album highlight. Check that out above and certainly check out the album if you haven't yet. Also, according to a post I just read, you can grab 3 additional tracks (excellent!) [...]
I don't want to spoil the big reveal that comes halfway through King Creosote & Jon Hopkins's "Third Swan" video, so I'll just say that the clip, from director Elliot Dear , shows a lush, painterly vision of a countryside that's been... affected by something big. Watch it below. Read More...

I am sure that most of you are already aware that the inaugural longlist for the Scottish Album of the Year Award was announced this week and I think it's safe to say that the list took quite a few people by surprise. To be honest with you I don't really know what I was expecting, but from the 20 albums that made the long list there are a few that I was genuinely surprise to see on there and a whole lot more that I had plain old never heard of. I guess it's the eclectic nature [...]

Well, after last year's neck-and-neck battle between Meursault and The National, this year's Song, by Toad Readers' Top Five Albums was something of a stroll by comparison. Although the field behind this album was congested, King Creosote & Jon Hopkins' Diamond Mine was a comfortable winner in the end. Whilst I doubt this quite makes up for missing out on the Mercury Prize to P.J. Harvey, it's interesting to note that after a very strong initial showing, she didn't even make the top five of this particular list. And you can bet your arse she won't [...]

The baubles in question would be twofold: Firstly, the Song, by Toad readers are awarding their own baubles for the year's musical endeavours, both in terms of anointing their song and their album of the year. And secondly, the very second I post this I am heading up into town to Kid Canaveral's Christmas Baubles, their second of what I assume will become an annual Christmas knees-up, this time hosted at Edinburgh's rather amazing Summerhall. This week on Song, by Toad I will be publishing my own top twenty albums of the year, and [...]

Baltimore - Every couple of years, like slides in a powerpoint presentation, I like to change the backdrop. But I have always struggled with first years. By that I refer to my relationships with changes in scenery rather than with hormone-effervescing fresh-women (to be politically correct as George Carlin suggested). I am constantly, and embarrassingly, surprised each time how woefully unprepared I still am. Incidentally, 2011 has also been a tumultuous year on many fronts. So with everything concerned, I present to you my Pests vs. Bests of 2011 - both bad and good things that have been on my mind [...]

Well here we are again, with lists this time generated by yourselves rather than me. With one exception none of these songs would have been anywhere near my personal Festive Fifty, and the one which would have made it is forbidden due to an obvious clash of interests. It's weird, but it does at the very least go to show that the idea of the blogosphere being just a great big mutual back-slapping exercise, with everyone telling everyone else just how awesome they are most of the time, isn't entirely accurate. Still, just because I am an opinionated [...]
NPR gave these guys a lot of play on their 2011’s Biggest Discoveries and Surprises show. I’d never heard of them, but this album is awesome. It took 7 years to make. Here’s what Bob Boilen had to say: It’s a look and a study, in song and in sound, of life in a small Scottish town. It doesn’t romanticize it — it paints sort of hard pictures of what life is like there and what people think. King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - “Bats in [...]

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins will be undertaking their largest UK tour to date in the New Year. Taking in shows from Glasgow to Brighton and then on a roundabout route to Leeds, KC & Jon will be performing songs from their Mercury nominated Diamond Mine album, and a few extra treats. The majority of the shows will see KC & Jon performing as a duo, with their full band joining them in Glasgow and London only. Full tour details are as follows, tickets for all shows [...]
It's been a good year for King Creosote , especially considering all the accolades he's received working with Jon Hopkins on Diamond Mine (an album you must get your hands on!). Now the duo has pushed out another short EP, Honest Words EP , which features two new songs, and a re-imagining of "Bats in the Attic." Just one listen to this remarkable track, and you'll realize why everyone is supporting the collaboration, clamoring for more. It's the most unassuming pop, and [...]

The start of this week was a bit of a right off for me, on Monday I was struck down by the dreaded man flu which really hit me for six (girls you're never fully understand how much we suffer). The tail end of the week has picked up somewhat though, on Thursday I caught Endor at the Captain's Rest for their ten year anniversary show and then last night I returned to the same venue for The Moth & The Mirror single launch. It is for this reason that I have decided that I am currently in my [...]
