Seamus Fogarty The very first G-Man Presents show of 2013 has just been announced... ...and I am absolutely thrilled to confirm London-based guitarist Seamus Fogarty will top the bill. The first G-Man Presents... showcase to feature in Plugd Records i.e. the greatest record store the land has ever known, will take place on the second week of February and will be a cosy, intimate affair with the master craftsman. Well well well, the voting for the song of the year was indeed done by a rather hometown audience, with the new Meursault album dominating, and only one song in the top five coming from outside our own wee corner of the Scottish music scene. The votes were genuinely all over the place as well. The Walkmen deserve some sympathy for having loads of songs in the voting, but not enough going to one specific one to register on the leader board, and it was the same for a lot of stuff, as votes didn't seem to really [...]
This year has witnessed possibly the most seismic change in my listening habits since I left my teens and actually worked out what sort of music I like. This time the change isn't about the music itself, but about the way that music is consumed. I have always, and will always be a great believer in the album as a format. My masters' thesis was on the primacy of the album in rock music, and I can barely move for tripping over piles of CD albums. So what's changed? [...]
Christ, it's suddenly Winter! Never mind Autumn, it's gone from being sunny and lovely on Saturday, to shitty and cold by yesterday. Balls. Ah well, as Billy Connolly (sort of) said, 'what the fuck do you expect, you live in fucking Scotland for fuck's sake'. Anyhow, shitey weather aside, this week see the first of Song, by Toad's BAD FUN nights, held downstairs at Henderson's at St. John's at the foot of Lothian Road. After a night in my own bed (I can promise there's no greater feeling than leaving a muddy campsite knowing there's a hot shower waiting on you twenty minutes away) it was back to the Carron Valley. On arrival, we heard some rather interesting noises emanating from the Baino Stage. It turned out this was the cheery pop of Teen Canteen , who are beyond twee but are also fantastic – of all the bands I've heard who are named after Showaddywaddy songs, they're definitely the best. Sadly we only heard a couple of songs [...]

New Electronica from Jon Hopkins
Musically, I'm going out on a limb here, but only because B. Gray is our usual electronic afficionado. But, that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the work of Jon Hopkins . He first came to my attention a few years ago when he worked on Diamond Mine with King Creosote ; I still play that album all the time. He's got a new record coming out on Domino on June 4th titled Immunity , and it's going to be a [...]

Lucky Seven – The Joy of Sets
OK, regular Christmas readers of this organ will remember that it often takes me a while to get into this end of year malarkey, but once I’ve warmed up… So, anyway, I’m venturing forth and starting with some great gigs I’ve been to this year. I’m always a bit sheepish about recounting my gig tally for the year – usually I can do this on the fingers of both hands, although this year I’ve had to take off my shoes and socks too. (I have buddies who talk about getting close to three figures, think about it…) [...]

Soft Gem from King Creosote
One of the things I hate about the US is that it's really hard to get the good vinyl from the UK without paying a hefty sum. If it weren't so, I'd definitely have my house filled with the beautiful sounds of Kenny Anderson, aka King Creosote . Today, he's releasing his newest collection of tunes, a three song EP titled To Deal With Things . On this particular tune, Anderson quietly enters the fold, letting his vocals brood and build, just before the drums slightly pick up the pace. [...]
