Filed under: News AFP In Greek mythology, Icarus was the guy who flew too close to the sun only to have his wings melt, causing him to fall back into the sea where he drowned. Back in 1984, Michael Jackson was flying high, the undisputed biggest musician in the whole world. And even though his wings were metaphorical, he got burned in a very real way. There are those who would believe the catalyst for the [...]

I probably should begin by apologizing for the awkward title of this piece but it is a reasonably accurate statement, even if it needs further elaboration. The Kingsmen, a fractious group that has existed in one form or another in almost every decade since its inception in the 1950s, is most remembered for "Louie, Louie." But that performance was inspired by an earlier version, one offered up by Rockin' Robin Roberts and the Fabulous Wailers - a bunch whose very name is attention-grabbing. The song itself has received more than its share of bad press through the years [...]
Pomona's finest dance band hard at work, circa 1960.

I first caught Louis C.K. on his HBO show, Lucky Louie , when it debuted back in '06. It wasn't my favorite show to hit HBO, but the two main characters, Louie C.K. & Pamela Adlon (now on Californication), made a good match. The show was canceled after its first season, but was picked up by FX last year. The show was revamped for FX, straying away from the sitcom (thank god) and going for a more realistic look at the sarcastic downfalls of a comedian - not far off from Curb [...]

As the series continues, we have Matt's summer playlist, which has some absolute classics and so far has probably picked the best songs, Lewi definitely has a challenge for his forthcoming episode. The Upsidedown Portland, Oregon. It`s poetic connection with music and countless kindred band associations. I keep dipping my big toe into the belly of Portland`s music scene, pulling a track or two, briefly skimming the surface and generally enjoying some Mid-West answers. Rather than an Englishman with limited knowledge of the area rattling on about a place he hasn`t been lucky enough to visit, a pair of nicely informed links should suffice. Discover.Portland.Music and PDX Pipeline . Tonight, I shall rest assured knowing a small piece of music trivia is locked [...]
If you have Andrew W.K. hosting a charity event, it's fairly certain someone somewhere will feel the need to "Party Hard". Clean-cut, non bloody-nosed , and newly married Mr. W.K. got the crowd revved up with his infectious positivity, motivational speaker-y vibes and encouraging personality. He sounded off on charity ventures through NYCares , the power of rock n' roll, and how Indie Rock Karaoke is about good music, friends, fun times and "crushing the ego" in the name of good clean fun and [...]

Audio Recording, Seattle, Washington There were two companies known by the less-than-inventive name Audio Recording in operation in the 1960's and 1970's. The Cleveland version, which we'll discuss in a future post, was where Maureen McGovern recorded The Morning After . The Seattle version is best known as the place where the Kingsmen recorded The Jolly Green Giant . According to legend, The Jolly Green Giant [...]

I had a drama professor back in college who was a bit of a rogue, but an outstanding instructor nonetheless. For some reason presumably tied to departmental politics, he was the person who usually got tasked with teaching the foundation courses in Traditions of Western Drama or whatever the prevailing uni-speak is for "reading a shitload of old plays and discussing why they matter ." These were the mandatory courses that every aspiring thespian or playwright had to suffer through before passing onward and upward to the sexier, hands-on parts of the curriculum, but this professor had [...]
This song is hilarious. Nicely done remix of a classic record. Plus with a name like Japetto it has to be good. Louie, Louie (Japetto Remix) - The Kingsmen YSI | Zippyshare

Driving home last night, in a rare moment when I was listening to the radio (for my personal views on the radio, read this previous post ), I heard a song that I haven't heard in ages, and in fact had pretty much forgotten about: Sam Kinison's version of Wild Thing . I have to be honest and say that I never fully appreciated Sam's comic style, but I always did enjoy this song. And even better than listening to the song was watching the video , which included Jessica Hahn, Aerosmith, Ratt, Billy Idol, Slash, Bon [...]
