Tonight is being forecast to be one of the coldest of the season so far, but the central heat is keeping the chill of the outside world at bay and its steady hum is soothing. The only light radiating – other than that from the television's glow – is from several strands of white bulbs which Paloma has put up along with several other trinkets of the season. On the television screen is Bedford Falls and It's A Wonderful Life . I didn't grow up with viewings of It's A Wonderful [...]
With everyone fixated on John Lewis' Christmas advert, this seems to have slipped by: Really, Tesco? The Fairytale Of New York? I guess this means that the song has now melted so far in our national psyche that the lyrics have been replaced with just a chanting of "Christmassy Christmassy Christmassy" whenever we hear it? -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

Not the most obvious choice of artist for Ambient Sunday, I grant you. But I was reminded of this by a post from JC over at The Vinyl Villain, who posted mixes of Walking Down Madison ( here ) but didn't include the ambient mix. This provides a gentle, whispy backing, focused on the tom toms, leaving Kirsty's voice to carry the track. The remix was by Howard Grey of Apollo 440. It's a shame she didn't work with other electronic artists. Kirsty MacColl - Walking Down Madison (6am ambient mix) [...]

Last month Death Cab For Cutie returned to the spotlight with "You Are A Tourist," the great first single and video from their forthcoming Codes And Keys . A sunny addition to our spring playlist, it recalls brighter moments of mid-period Cure when it's not channeling "Float On." That's fitting given how Ben Gibbard's got five Cure covers in his live repertoire. In fact I can't remember ever seeing seeing the guy perform without hearing some other band's song in the set. So before we gear up to collectively prematurely evaluate Codes , here's a listen back at [...]

Pocket Satellite are an acoustic, alternative, folk band made up of Maya, Carl, Rich, Ruth and Tom who, despite originating from four different cities, came together after randomly meeting in Sheffield. "Paper Aviator" features six songs, with the standout track being the title track. The sound is a mixture of folk, pop and country and western. The female lead vocalist at times sounds like the late great Kirsty MacColl (God rest her soul) and the male vocals are a nice counterbalance. Read more..

Today is January 8th, which means two things around here. It's the fourth anniversary of the Boogie Woogie Flu, and , of course, Elvis's birthday. So, in celebration of these two miraculous events, I, T-Bone Carruthers, Mayor of Fluville, offer you four groups of four songs, four square and for today. They are: four versions of Bob Dylan's answer song to "Norwegian Wood," four songs covered by Elvis on his Memphis Record , the same four songs performed by the King, and four songs about him. Think of them as little EPs. Not too [...]

Tribute albums are usually pretty spotty affairs. The vast majority of the songs tend to either try too hard to radically change the song or barely change it at all. The best you can hope for is one or two truly inspired readings surrounded by songs where the covering artists at least seem to actually like the song. That's the absolute best, though. 19902s Red Hot + Blue was a tribute album with an inspired tributee: Cole Porter. By taking an artist whose songs have no single "original version", almost all of the songs fall comfortably between radical [...]

Three new covers of the timeless Pogues/Kirsty MacColl Christmas song.

From the time I was ten until I had turned sixteen, one of the highlights of Monday Night Football was – at some point late in the game with the outcome no longer in doubt – hearing commentator Don Meredith croon, "Turn out the lights, the party's over." So, I was a bit bummed to hear of his death this past week. I missed the first four seasons during which Meredith was one of the original Monday Night Football announcers. When he returned to the booth in 1977, I was [...]
One great song, three superior versions. But which is your favourite? I'll probably get lynched for this but I'm quite partial to the Tracey Ullman version myself. Probably only because that's the one I grew up with, mind. *dives for cover* Mildly Interesting Pop Fact : (courtesy of Davy in this guestbook entry ): Stiff Records overdubbed Tracey Ullman's vocal onto Kirsty MacColl's original backing track for that record. The hi-pitched 'Baby!' half way through is Kirsty (uncredited). [...]
Hey remember when this blog was updated more than once every week or so? Man, those were the days. That Lost Turntable guy sure is an asshole. Big Audio Dynamite B.A.D. Overture This is a mega-medly of various B.A.D. beats, samples and riffs. It's silly for sure, but a great example of both the highs and lows of 80s remixes all in one five minute track! This track goes by a few different names. It's also called the "Lovesensi Overture" according to [...]

No, this post is not about a famous wall in Fenway Park in Boston. The green monster I refer to is jealousy. It is one of our most powerful emotions, and here it drives two very different women to an act that they feel compelled to apologize for later. But their apologies are as different as are the women themselves. Kirsty MacColl : Miss Otis Regrets [ purchase ] Miss Otis Regrets is a standard by Cole Porter. Porter often focused on the foibles of [...]

Kirsty MacColl: Days [ purchase ] My first post this week featured a perfect Tracey Ullman popcover of a Kirsty MacColl song; I couldn't resist the chance to end the week with an equally perfect cover performed by Kirsty herself. Days , which first emerged on 1989 hit record Kite, is a lovely, dreamy pop take on a Kinks song that charted third highest of MacColl's lifetime releases. I've always found the song a bit more poignant since the English [...]
