I think it's flashback week here at You Ain't No Picasso! I just got to write about The Light Footwork for the first time in forever and now I'm writing about Kite Flying Society, a pop group I used to cover all the time until they went on a brief hiatus. They finished up their [...]
What a sad day!! If you head to the MySpace page for Kite Flying Society, you'll notice a post that our favorite pop quintet is breaking up! With only one incredible CD, "Where is the Glow?" in the bag, and with 9 finished tracks for their planned sophomore album "The Aviary," the group decided to part ways mainly, they say, because "two of our members are moving away from San Diengo - Derek to San Franciso and John to Shanghai." We hope that they'll find some way to release the 9 unreleased tracks to their sophomore album! [...]
So, there are four days until Valentine's Day, the clear front-runner for everyone's favorite holiday. It seems that it doesn't even matter if you're in a relationship or not on Valentine's Day, and that it's just an all around crummy day for everyone: if you don't have anyone , then you buy yourself a box of chocolates, and it's just depressing, and if you do have someone, the anxiety and hype surrounding the holiday can only really lead to expectations that are too high, followed by disappointment. Anyway, we thought it would be fun to put together Valentine's [...]
San Diego indie-pop-alt-country-rockers, Kite Flying Society , titled their debut album Where's the Glow? . Not a bad choice, fellas. So long as you're 100% sissy. In the same vein as thoughts like "what would I do without you" or "do you think I'm pretty", the question unsuccessfully attempts to imply its own answer. I believe there is a specific term for this in sporting circles. It is known as "not giving it 110%." Players who give 110% don't have time to ask questions on uncertain terms. They [...]

If you can believe it, these guys are actually unsigned. Sounding like a less twee version of The Boy Least Likely To, Kite Flying Society spins their own amazing blend of autumn psych-pop that's guaranteed to get you thinking about joy, old loves, and assorted other look-back-and-reflect type memories. They'll be releasing a new album this September called The Aviary . Keep your eyes and ears open, there's no way they'll stay unsigned much longer. el lector de feeds que uso tiene una función para clipear entradas. eso significa que cada vez que leo u ojeo una entrada medianamente interesante le pongo un tick para revisarla, releerla, explorarla o reseñarla aquí o en otros lados en el futuro. eso significa que se me acumulan los ticks, las lecturas, los discos, las canciones que bajarme y reseñar. a modo de purga, ahí van varias canciones tickadas. a rasgos grandes, son bien centelleantes y veraniegas. quien quiera saber más, que pulse más, evidentemente. springfactory - as winter gives away [...]

I made a playlist the other day and this is what was on it. It was really short but I played it over and over again. I like it. I like it a lot. Summer makes me lazy and I think that I miss going to school. Maybe I just need to find something to keep me busy. Anywho, if you like what you hear, please support these bands. Kite Flying Society is a band from my hometown, the drummer was actually my professor for a college music class I took a few semesters back. Perfect Teeth is [...]
Short Story Saturday is a new feature that seeks to combine my love for music with my almost as passionate love for short fiction. Each installment will include one of my favorite short stories, accompanied by a brief score of mp3s, sort of a soundtrack to the story. Last week, in my first try at it, I chose the classic Virginia Woolf story, "The Mark on the Wall," from which the band Modest Mouse derive their name. For this second Saturday enjoy one of my favorite J.D. Salinger stories, "A Perfect Day For Bananafish." Here's a brief excerpt, [...]
Kite Flying Society are aiming for an early September release for their new album, The Aviary, but were nice enough to share an MP3 of a new song with us here. MP3: Kite Flying Society - Oh, Amy! Just in time to make the last half of summer, it's Kite Flying ...
While browsing around for information on the upcoming Kite Flying Society album, I ran across this video of the San Diego group playing live on their local Fox affiliate. It's about five months old, but it's new to me. Kite Flying Society are currently recording their second album, the follow-up to ...
What a lovely little lucky find on this Sunday evening! This could very well be one of my favorite albums of the year. =o) No, no it's not because they have a violin AND a glockenspiel incorporated into their songs. Yes, I know I love that, but it's so much more than the strings. It's the whole happiness of the songs! Kite Flying Society and their album " Where Is The Glow? " Released in August of 2006, but not heard by me until this very moment. And quite frankly, I cannot possibly [...]

Photo by David Greenwald Kite Flying Society are a band that are probably on your radar by now. If you didn't hear about them here, you definitely did over at Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands -- Chad's posted on them frequently. And with good reason. After sitting down with the likeable folk/indie-pop album long enough to review it , I decided it wasn't quite album-of-the-year material, but it did have two near-perfect songs. Enjoy them. MP3s are right-click, save-as. Kite Flying Society - [...]

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that exchanged mixes this time around, it was a really good group and I think our best exchange yet. This is the least themed of any of the exchanges so far, or rather, most people personalized the themes to their music. Topo has been pushing for this the whole time and I myself went ahead and broke rank with my mix as well. I posted it here, mostly because I don't have anyones cover art at a high enough res. There will be more posted in [...]

It's about that time again. I don't really like lists titled "BEST OF" because really, who am I to say? These are just the albums from 2006 that I love the most and have listened to over and over again. To check out many other opinions on the matter, head on over to Largehearted Boy's master compilation of blogs' year end lists . And now, without further ado, my big 13 with accompanying songs. These albums are listed in no particular order. Enjoy! The Decemberists - The Crane Wife [...]

Like thousands of other indie hipsters, I love my happy-twee-indie-pop. I listen to it a good chunck of the time as I frolic around my beautiful California college campus. But unfortunately, I am not always in the mood to smile and giggle. You know what I mean right? Ok. Sooo...because of this aforementioned dilemma I decided to make a mix that would more appropriately accompany a sad state of emotion despite the weather still being sunny and the setting being happy. To evoke this specific emotion I decided to take all of the best sad and slow songs from my [...]
