Photos: The Joy Formidable, Guards, Kitten @ The Vic, Chicago 4/2/13

The Joy Formidable played The Vic in Chicago last night. After sets from openers Kitten and Guards, the band rocked songs from their recent album Wolf's Law and 2011 debut The Big Roar . Max Herman was on the scene to capture the night.

INTRODUCING: BLAKE!

INTRODUCING: BLAKE! We’ve stumbled across a deep house producer that goes by the name of Blake! The 22 year old producer/DJ has some top notch remixes on his soundcloud and also some nice unsigned originals of his own.  We’re really enjoying his deep, bassy track ‘What you Say?! ’ and his recent remix of Kolombo’s banger ‘Whatever U Like’ is rather enjoyable too. Stream both below and check out Blake! on soundcloud here .

SEAL AND WOMENS PONCHO

SEAL AND WOMENS PONCHO You can spot (well hear) an Insect Elektrika track a mile off. The distinct, quirky minimal sound is all their very own. The latest track is inspired by a story involving seal and a womens poncho. We'd love to hear that story. We're imagining some pretty kinky stuff! It's a great track anyway - stick it on.

HAPPY EASTER Y’ALL

HAPPY EASTER Y’ALL Happy Easter! We hope you're having a great weekend whatever you're up to. If like us you are currently sitting on the sofa in a chocolate induced coma here's something that might encourage you to haul your ass up to the kitchen (for more chocolate), or... if you're out raving tonight this will be the perfect warm up. Deetron and Will Saul in the Mixmag DJ lab on Thursday evening - big tunes.

SXSW Interviews: Kitten

SXSW Interviews: Kitten SXSW Interviews: Kitten is a post from Indie Houston - Music - Technology - Press - Independent - Media - Houston, Texas I recently got to go to SXSW for a few days and interview a few people - like Kitten . A young, five piece 802s electro-rock band led by polarizing Chloe Chaidez, who are more than capable and willing to take over the "hipster" scene with their smooth synths and youthful guitar backing. The youngest member in the band, Waylon, is 16. I got to talk [...]

SXSW 2013: A Diary Of A “Crafty Veteran”

Having been dubbed a “crafty veteran” by one local bystander, there are a few certain truths that I have discovered seven years deep into South By South West culture. 1) Always carry your phone charger because the battery will die; the ABC’s (Always Be Chargin’) as we here at Spinning Platters like to call it. [...] The post SXSW 2013: A Diary Of A "Crafty Veteran" appeared first on Spinning Platters .

KITTENCAST 0313 – MIXED BY J2C

KITTENCAST 0313 – MIXED BY J2C This months Kittencast comes from DJ and production duo J2C . We first featured these guys on the blog for their banger of a track ‘The World’ . We instantly fell in love with their garage house sound and so asked if they’d pull together a mix for us. And here we are – a one hour mix of bassy garage house with an old skool vibe thrown in for good measure. J2C are producing some top quality tracks and have been playing the San Fransico circuit recently (and [...]

SHOULDA ROLLA

SHOULDA ROLLA Dubstep ledgend Pinch has collaborated with Roska on this deep moody atmospheric dubstep track with big warping bass and lotsa percussion. Very badass. ‘Shoulda Rolla’ is released on Pinch’s label Tectonic on 15 April.

Kitten Talk Shower Music & Spotify At Sonos Studio In Austin: Watch

Kitten took full advantage of their time in Austin for SXSW, getting their name out by  performing nine shows  and doing a number of interviews, including a very entertaining one with us . The California band was also one of a select few acts to perform at Sonos Studio for an intimate set and an accompanying discussion of musical influences (theirs range from The Beach Boys to Eurythmics to whatever is on SiriusXMU at the moment). Up top, watch singer Chloe Chaidez describe what you could call her anti-Swiftian approach to songwriting: [...]

SECRETSUNDAZE EASTER SPECIAL

SECRETSUNDAZE EASTER SPECIAL It’s Easter bank holiday this weekend, which can mean only two things: chocolate and clubbing. We’ll be indulging in both, kicking off on Thursday with the secretsundaze Easter party at Electric Brixton down in London town. Headliner Nina Kraviz will be making her second appearance at a secretsundaze party, joined by acid house pioneer A Guy Called Gerald giving it to us live. Also on the decks will be Detroit legend Mike Huckaby who is responsible for this anthem ! Room 2 will see two hot young [...]

BEAM ME UP

BEAM ME UP We’ve been anticipating more from Will Saul’s new project CLOSE since he announced it with track O S C A R 5 months ago. The first official single is now ready for our consumption. ‘Beam Me Up’ feat. Charlene Soraia & Scuba is a blazing debut, melodic bass driven house with glorious spine-tingling vocals and the soulful sound we’d expect from Mr. Saul. The track is taken from the forthcoming album ‘Getting Closer’ which will be out in June, expect collaborations with Scuba, Ewan Pearson and Appleblim. Beam Me Up is released on !k7 [...]

SXSW Quick Thoughts: Cayucas, Kitten, Savages, Toy and more

SXSW Quick Thoughts: Cayucas, Kitten, Savages, Toy and more Here are some quick thoughts on other SXSW acts I saw. DIIV, Mohawk Lounge - These guys had a rather long sound check and their shoegazey-distorted indied rock sound didn't really do much for me. I found out later that they had been moved from Red Eye Fly so that the Polyphonic Spree can have a two hour set. Anytime you are an up and coming band that gets moved from one venue to another in favorite of a cult-twee band, you have a right to be upset and thrown off your game, I guess. [...]

DEETRON TO THE RESCUE

DEETRON TO THE RESCUE Mondays are always a struggle, so we’ve been on the hunt for a track to ease you gently back into the working week. This week we’re hoping that the Deetron remix of Amirali’s Melancholia is the one to finish off your day with. The mellow, spacey sounds of Amirali with a deep melodic groove from Deetron . Released 1/4/13 , stream below.

ALBUM REVIEW: SIS – CONFIDANCE

ALBUM REVIEW: SIS – CONFIDANCE We’ve been sent a lot of promo albums this week, and whilst we’ve enjoyed quite a few of them, there’s a clear standout- ‘Confidance’ from the mysterious SIS . It’s a real gem of an album - complicated, world influenced house, made with passion and energy but retaining a subtle clarity which distinguishes it from others who would claim to fit within the same genre. According to the press release this, his second album, charts his training as a Horse Whisperer. No that’s not a typo- SIS is clearly [...]

Watch Kitten Chat With Us About Their Debut Album & Touring With Paramore

South by Southwest wasn't all fun and games for us — we got a lot of work done , too! But when said work included seeing Justin Timberlake 's show and interviewing bands like Kitten , it's still pretty much all fun and games. In fact, heading into our chat with Kitten, we knew the band would be a good time, so we brought a camera crew along to Austin's Red Room Lounge to capture the action. You already got Chloe Chaidez and Co.'s thoughts on SXSW food and the [...]

DREAMY JETLAG

DREAMY JETLAG This track floated its way into our inbox all the way from Brussels, sent by DJ-duo J etlag . ‘Technicolour Heart’ is the latest single to come from the pair who produce deep, progressive house and UK Garage. Vocals are taken from an accapella of Anneka’s ‘Technicolour’ which are then blended with soft beats and smooth melodies to create a wonderfully atmospheric track that would sit nicely in any after party playlist. Stream below.

ALBUM REVIEW: BLACK BUTTER SPREAD LOVE VOL 2

ALBUM REVIEW: BLACK BUTTER SPREAD LOVE VOL 2 Black Butter Records is a label that we well and truly love. It’s home to Kidnap Kid , Rudimental and a whole host of other brilliant artists such as My Nu Leng, Clean Bandit and Gorgon City. All of these have that great bass, garage house sound that you associate with Black Butter. You may have been aware that they have been giving away a load of free downloads over the past few months as part of their ‘Black Butter Spread Love’ [...]

THREE TRACKS WE’RE DIGGIN’ TODAY

THREE TRACKS WE’RE DIGGIN’ TODAY ‘Minimal, minimal, minimal’  is how  Jake Hart  describes his music.  This track from the South London solo artist is oozing with ambient bass.  And it’s minimal (of course). Whilk & Misky , a London based duo have only been friends since November and are now like ‘long lost brothters’ looking to hit the London circuit in the summer.  Their track ‘Wing Clipper’ is an unlikely mix of blues vocals and piano with a techno edge. Heavenly. [...]

WHERE DANCEFLOORS STAND STILL

WHERE DANCEFLOORS STAND STILL You can always rely on DJ Sprinkles to produce music with a message and his latest DJ Mix ‘Where dancefloors stand still’ has been produced to highlight the strange Japanese Fuzoku law which prevents nightclubs from opening past 1am. From the excerpts online, it’s   sleek, timeless ‘proper’ deep house , smoothly blended as we have come to expect from one of our favourite DJs and Producers.
