Artist : Los Campesinos! Support : Tall Ships Venue : Thekla, Bristol Date : Wednesday 21st March Words by Mel Reeve. Photography by Amanda Penlington Wednesday night at Bristol's Thekla gets underway early and Tall Ships perform in a way that would be commendable for a headlining band. It's rare to [...]

Words by Tom Johnson Photography by Amanda Penlington 2012 has already been some year for Johanna and Klara Söderberg. The two sisters released the second record under their First Aid Kit moniker ( The Lions Roar) and bagged themselves a host of rave reviews along the way, not to mention a number one album - the very first for their esteemed label Wichita in over ten years of wonderful releases. Their recent jaunt around the UK came to a close at the Thekla in Bristol [...]

American rockers The War On Drugs won many a new fan with last years Slave Ambient LP, topping a number of end-of-year lists along the way. The four-piece bought their astounding live show to Bristol's Thekla last week and wowed everyone aboard for nearly two hours in a show that all of us there will remember for a long time. Here are a selection of photographs from the evening. [...]

Artist : Dog is Dead Venue : Thekla , Bristol With no album out yet and only a couple of EP releases to their name Nottingham band Dog is Dead have concentrated their efforts on building up a reputation on the live circuit over the last few years. Their confident musicianship was evident at Bristol's Thekla on Tuesday when they played a set comprising of new unreleased material alongside familiar tracks. Their arrangements, for the most part are comprised of guitars, bass, keys and percussion but the [...]
Melvins had already achieved cult status before some of their fans were even born. Still, the 'Godfathers of Grunge' continue releasing albums and touring prolifically putting many of today's artist to shame. The band are currently winding down their European date and are due to play the final show of this tour at Bristol's [...]

Well, it's been an interesting week, involving quite a lot of work, a broken elbow and a trip to Thekla. Which would you like to hear about? I thought so… Avi Buffalo @ Thekla The aforementioned elbow, with arm in sling, meant I was feeling a bit ginger as Martin and I made our way below deck and bought drinks. We were met with the sight of Master Buffalo himself manning his own merch stall, which is kinda stirring when it's the likes of David Gedge or Laura Cantrell, but even more charming here, [...]

Artist : Everything Everything Venue : Bristol Thekla Date : Saturday 25th June Everything Everything's Man Alive was one of the most exciting debut albums of 2010. The band's distinctive sound comes from a combination of surprising melodic shifts and timing changes. Add in dramatic lyrics that mix references to popular culture with scientific concepts, and Everything Everything begin to defy the usual expectations of Indie-pop. On Saturday night they returned to Bristol's Thekla for a warm-up gig before their Sunday slot at Glastonbury Festival. [...]

As evidenced by the above bastardisation of the official 2011 branding for this year's edition of Britain's best tripartite estival bash, Dot to Dot , no other festival is quite so nominally aligned with what we've come to know as Dots & Dashes . However it's not merely our kindred monikers that ally our existences, for much music about which we've waxed lyrical of late came to Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester last weekend. Big buck indie stalwarts tussled with neonatal synth pop and ambient neophytes for the fuse-like attention spans of flippant wanderers stumbling about Bristol city centre [...]

In many respects, Montréal's Braids are quite a special band. Primarily, they manage to harness, or perhaps control, the resolute ambition of Animal Collective, and offset it with luscious bedroom harmonies Nicola Roberts' Porcelain Heart could thud to. They also look next to nothing like a "buzz band", which tends to prove a plus point. Their debut EP Native Speaker is a refreshing gush of vocal acrobatics and aqueous, watercolour soundscape, and live is something of a marvel. Talking crowds and (Fred Perry Sub)culture, Canada and clothing, we met, and now introduce Braids. [...]

As the dying embers of the scholastic season dwindle, their charred ashes are thrown to the wind and whisked away by the segueing festival-fuelled estival months, and whilst some of us struggle and strive away with presentations, dissertations, gruelling exams etc., a handful of metropolitan festivals have already bustled up some hype (see Camden Crawl / Stag & Dagger ), propelling daydreams of lukewarm lager, mires of sludge and a band or two to the fore of frontal lobes. This weekend it's the turn of DHP Group's tripartite Dot to Dot , taking over Bristol (Saturday), Nottingham (Sunday), [...]

CLICK IMAGE TO VIEW VIDEO This is the inside story of Street Art - a brutal and revealing account of what happens when fame, money and vandalism collide. Exit Through the Gift Shop follows an eccentric shop-keeper turned amateur film-maker as he attempts to capture many of the world's most infamous vandals on camera, only to have a British stencil artist named Banksy turn the camcorder back on its owner with wildly unexpected results. One of the most provocative films about art evermade, Exit Through the Gift Shop is a fascinating study of low-level criminality, [...]

If you've wound up here you presumably already know the ins and outs of the life of James Blake up until this point in time. You'll know he never learnt to share, that his brother and his sister don't speak to him despite Blake being an only child and that Goldsmiths didn't really float his boat, whilst dreamy hand-picked support act Cloud Boat most certainly do. If you've never had the pleasure of an audience with Blake, best rectify such status as soon as humanly possible, before you'll be in need of inhuman aid, or military [...]

With the exception of Barbie fancies, Hip-Hop seems to have entered a testosterone zone with a sausage party dominating our own TSS homepage most of the time. Enter K'la , an Indiana songbird with a visceral, vintage-style flow. The Midwesterner's mixtape was destined to catch our eye from the moment she opted to bundle up in a scarf and jacket for her cover art, a welcome contrast to scantly-clad industry norms. Without wasting words and dissecting a dozen tracks, I'll just say the whole tape is worth a sit-and-listen. At just 22 years [...]

Sometimes you hear a new artist and know immediately they're worthy of the spotlight. That is definitely the impression I got after listening to K'la's The Coldest Winter Ever mixtape. The talented rapper/singer/songwriter showed her range of artistry on this new offering bringing something fresh to the game and local radio so I've heard (thanks Jai). You can do yourself a favor and get familiar with Ms. K'la via the stream below (sorry for auto-play couldn't turn it off) and if you're feeling it you can hit the download link below as well. Be sure to give her [...]

![Klas: To Sleep And Love [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1370405_lg.jpg)
Written by Fense I covered Klas back in September after receiving a little compilation from Series II Records (read that coverage here ) and noted how their style of folk-pop had twee-ish elements to it. But in listening to their full length, To Sleep And Love , I'm hearing a little country influence as well. Sure, it's the folk side of country, but it is there in songs like "Birds" and "Skinny Girl". It's a side that simply wasn't as prevalent on [...]

Klas is a delightful little 5 piece band from Malmö, Sweden that specializes in some very enjoyable lo-fi twee acoustic indie pop. The comparisons to Jens Lekman are somewhat justifiable, especially because lyrics like " all the crap I learned when I was seven is the same crap that I still hold on to " boast that same stylish 'jilted boyfriend' charm that sounds like it's meant to be depressing but actually still manages to put a little bit of a smile to my face. However the more organic approach of this CD begs more of a [...]

Klas are a band based in Malmo, Sweden. To Sleep and Love is their debut album release. The bands music is less indie pop being more country or folk tinged and reminds me mainly of Lloyd Cole & The Commotions. Indeed such was the similarities with the vocals of Klas Sjoberg and Mr Cole's on album opener Skinny Girl I thought I had put on Rattlesnakes by mistake! The comparison actually fades the more you delve into the album which mainly touches down on the alt. country base. There are some variations on [...]
