Perfect proto-house tune from 2nd and last album of Klaus Nomi ("Simple Man", 1982) - man who played with pop-music as just with a favourite toy. Nomi was also a co-producer of the song (and of the whole album too). Second big name in a studio was the synthesizer's programmer - Man Parrish.

Now that I have a great turntable and pre-amp, I've been visiting the archives to see which albums and singles deserve to be re-recorded and re-posted. Obviously, the soundtrack to Urgh! A Music War was one of the first on the list. These new recordings sound light-years better than my last attempt, and I highly recommended you download them even if you have an older copy I posted. I've talked about Urgh! several times over, so I'll keep the intro brief. It's an amazing document of a time period in music, when the punk [...]
Last Address from Ira Sachs on Vimeo . Last Address: Remembering NYC Artists Who Died of AIDS is a quiet, simple, beautiful film documenting the last addresses of artists such as Cookie Mueller, David Wojnarowicz, Keith Haring and Klaus Nomi, amongst others. You can visit the film's website here to learn more about the artists whose homes are documented here. The filmmaker, Ira Sachs, wanted to pay homage to a generation lost to us, cosmic mothers guiding us from the ether.
This Donna Summer cover is taken from Blondie 's 1979 tour and can be found on the b-side of the 1995 reissue of 'Union City Blues' - a pretty faithful cover, but great to hear it reproduced live. In contrast check out the truly maverick version by German counter-tenor Klaus Nomi .

pic: William Vandivert « Wir waren jung!

Klaus Nomi - Total Eclipse Klaus Nomi - The Cold Song

Since Grizzly Bear just covered Hot Chip's Boy From School , I thought a covers post was in order! I'm pretty sure everybody loves a good cover, so there's really not much else to say. This post could be like ten pages long, so we'll probably do more covers posts in the future, but in the meantime here's Grizzly Bear's cover and a few other great ones that feel right for today. Enjoy! [...]

The Weekly Tape Deck dudes will be out and full of fire tonight at the Lounge on Elm St. where Darktown Strutters will be playing host to touring band Twisted Wires . Two bands who very obviously are knowledgeable of their influences; many will point Joy Division, and that is recognized but too easy for a blogger to point out. Darktown Strutters seem to find much inspiration in Warsaw and sometimes even moreso in goth cornerstones Klaus Nomi and Sex Gang Children. Twisted Wires not straying far are more polished and have an almost have a trance appeal and [...]

Now this is some stuff right here: Channeling a modern day Klaus Nomi , Lady Gaga 's continues to stage an incredible show only one night after her spectacular performance at the American Music Awards . The live singing, the dancing, the showmanship...check, check, check. Such a superstar! My Monster Ball concert is in just one week...I can't even begin to handle it. Oh, and don't forget to watch the interview afterward! Get pumped: The pretentious teacup shtick makes a comeback. [...]

Filed under: Movies New York City's East Village scene in the '70s and '80s had its fair share of quirky characters breaking down every musical, cultural and political wall imaginable. One such person, more weird and wonderful than many of the others, was Klaus Nomi . The German-born singer first moved to New York in 1972 with dreams of singing opera, but after discovering the glitz and glam of the New Wave movement, Nomi proceeded to shatter the glass ceiling of his favorite musical genre. What made him particularly distinct was his [...]
Klaus Nomi came from outer space, to save the human race.

Via Martin Iles : 'Hey y'all. Showing videos at Dan's Silverleaf this Sunday. Video of a French dandy picking pockets, an awesome short photo barrage of house facades, and a live music footage of 35 early 80s punk, New Wave, and post punk bands. Starts promptly at 10:30PM, and it's free. Because I love you, I will have a cheeseburger-shaped cake from Kroger for you to eat. First come, first serve, y'all. Spread the word, and come out if this shit interests you. Martin' [...]
You know, theatricality in music has a lot to answer for. Whether it's heavy metal posturing or tightly choreographed pop, the bad undoubtedly outweighs the good. Then again, that's just Sturgeon's law. The bad outweighs the good in just about everything, with the exception of cannabis, kittens and buttery shortbread. I'm not entirely sure whether Klaus Nomi is part of the 90% or the 10%, but he's certainly interesting . An operatic counter-tenor, his performances had a chilling and stark sense of camp. Like some robotic diva, his voice swooped and trilled [...]

First things first - RIP Lux Interior... Now, onto the business, and this business was much, much delayed. In April of 2006 I put up the soundtrack Urgh! to much fanfare around the blogosphere (God I hate that "word") so much so that I had to get a server upgrade. Unfortunately, as it was pointed out to me several months ago those files were recorded on a turntable that spun too fucking fast. Since then I had been meaning to re-record the tracks and repost them, but life can be a bitch. Well, I [...]

It's cold, I'm told ... the neighbor's dogs are barking in code. What else is there to do but lock yourself inside with a cup of your favorite warm beverage and some vintage new wave? EAR FARM's Mixtape #41: It's cold, I'm told 1. "We Are Glass" by Gary Numan 2. "Rescue" by Echo & the Bunnymen 3. "Empire State Human" by Human League 4. "Love Is A Wonderful Colour" by Icicle Works 5. "No Words" by Clan of Xymox 6. "Sensoria" by [...]
