Pardon my skepticism, but after spending the past few months in South-East Asia, I doubt any club on the continent is ready for this. In fact, it'd be a hard sell in Europe or America, let alone China. Choppy, abrasive, and sporting a melody fit for a Kubrick film about China's capitalist rise, "Xinfu Lu" evokes a Chinese street but not one dedicated to clubbing. Only three days after debuting the a-side of his first official single in two years, Kode9 has uploaded the b-side for public consumption. Opening with Nintendo charms, "Kan" quickly devolves into a barebones audial assault that will test even the largest sound systems. Most Kode9 tracks aren't "bangers" in the traditional (knock you off your feet) sense, because there's something almost uncanny about the way he mangles dubstep, garage, grime, etc. into his ultra-specific blueprint. "Xingfu Lu"/"Kan" is out next Monday (4/29) on Hyperdub.

'Xingfu Lu' is Kode9 's first single in over two years. With a steady crisp downbeat as its foundation, 'Xingfu Lu' has a more stumbling presence than expected. There's an almost bipolar quality to the track as it shifts from synth bursts to rhythmic pulsing. As the percussive rhythms threaten to go off the beat, it's the synths that tie it back to the always present drumbeat.
